So glad everyone is okay! I work in marketing for a restoration company. We deal with fire, flood, mold, biohazards, and so on. It’s amazing how much damage smoke from the fire and also water to put out a fire can cause.
To anyone reading this, a few pieces of advice; clean out your dryer vents, do not leave candles unattended, and never leave laptops plugged in and on a bed (they can overheat). Stay safe everyone!

    • @meggnogg
      @meggnogg ปีที่แล้ว +6

Thank you for your advice. Especially noting the 'smaller' more everyday instances that you may not even realise can cause a fire like the laptop. My PS4 once overheated as I was watching a film at night and fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night to a room full of smoke and a plastic burning smell. It turns out there was dust caught in the vents of it that I hadn't cleaned out. Everything in my room (white furniture, light coloured walls and light coloured accessories) all retained smoke damage 😔 including some irreplaceable objects. Moral of the story: regularly dust vents of electricionics and try to limit the use time to a couple of hours at a time. I was lucky I woke up when I did to eliminate any major fire my room didn't go up in flames with me in it.

Also don’t leave rags with chemicals on them anywhere. If you don’t want to wash them immediately, dispose of them immediately. My aunt’s entire house burned down because she had two rags with different chemicals (one was paint I think and one a cleaner) lying together in a washing basket and they ignited.

Ohh, never thought about the laptop. I've been unplugging mine after learning the hard way with my last tablet that keeping wireless electronics on the charger can cause the battery to expand. Always trim your wick down to 1/4inch to avoid a high flame 2: Dont burn your candle once the wax gets down to about a 1/2 inch in the vessel 3: never leave candles unattended 4. Sarah didn't leave the fire unattended and called for help, you grabbed the kids, Lo evacuated, Chris assessed the situation and realised he could put out the fire, Brendan assisted.. Those are all very good reactions to an emergency. My first home burned down completely, and I can very much sympathise with how rattled you are probably feeling right now. A home sized fire extinguisher is my go-to housewarming gift nowadays.

waving wet/wrung out towels through the air will help clear smoke from a room quickly, then just toss the towels in the wash. Old restaurant hack that you'll likely only use when you burn something like toast or your fireplace smokes, but useful to have as an additional step to opening windows. Glad you're all okay and you have the moments of C's joy! Thank goodness everyone is ok! Many people don’t realize that candles can cause damage with normal everyday use. My husband and I own an hvac service business and you can tell just by looking at the furnace filter if candles are used in the home. The filters are always much darker and often covered in black soot from the candle wicks burning. I decided years ago that I would only use the led candles and electric warmers for candle melts. Any time I’m tempted to buy a beautifully scented candle, I think of those black furnace filters and resist the urge.

OMG IM SO HAPPY EVERYONE IS OKAY! My family had a small fire once and it is TERRIFYING. Things can be replaced, the most important thing is everyone got out and thankfully, no one was hurt! 💗
Im a little jealous of something you said, though…INSURANCE. Long read, im really sorry, but i want to share what we are going through as a warning to everyone who doesnt have insurance, especially those who dont think they need it.
We are poor, no way around that. We do not have renters insurance. I live in Philly, and have been reporting a sink hole out front (in the street at the curb IN A CROSSWALK) for FOUR YEARS. The water department and streets department ignored every message. On Jan 12th (our anniversary of course!) the SEWAGE pipe that was leaking, causing that sink hole, exploded. Our basement (that we share with the store owner downstairs) flooded with 8 FEET of sewage water.
My neighbors went 1 day without water, we went 5 days and 12 days without hot water because they needed to replace the hot water heaters and electrical boxes. But NOW we are at a stand still…
They were going to send Servpro out to clean and they did…at 9am. Im disabled, i cannot get into the basement. Its the kind with doors in the sidewalk and the steps are a glorified ladder. I explained that my spouse was off these 2 weekdays & the store owner cannot be here before 1pm (he has 4 other stores) and since they were bringing our stuff out to catalog for the inspector, the store owner needed to be here.
They said they understood and rescheduled (so technically, that was us cancelling 1x). The reschedule date and time were what we asked for…they cancelled one us because of the weather (it was DRIZZLING and 45°! Wth). So we rescheduled AGAIN and this time, they come at 9am! I told the girl in the truck there must be some mistake, they know the store owned needs to be here. She said its ok dont worry we will just reschedule (thats us cancelling TWO TIMES)
The OFFICE calls and instantly i detect a rude tone. Since WE cancelled THREE times, they would NOT be rescheduling. Well..WE did not cancel 3 times we cancelled twice BECAUSE you keep ignoring the time we need aka you keep coming at the wrong time. And no one ever said “if you cancel or reschedule x amount of times….”! Again this isnt something we WANT, this is the water department FIXING SOMETHING THEY CAUSED DUE TO NEGLIGENCE. Well she says the WATER DEPT is the one that said not to reschedule! Im sorry, where do they get the option to destroy people property and then choose whether or not to repair the damage!?
They wont return our calls, we have yet to see an or hear from an inspector to look at the THOUSANDS in destroyed property and now they arent sending anyone to clean the HUMAN WASTE in our basement because “we cancelled” three times!? I am jealous that you had insurance, because if we could have afforded it, im sure they would have fixed and paid for everything by now and would have gone after the water department for us. Our only recourse right now is to reach out to local news stations because we cannot afford a lawyer. I lost all my decorations for every holiday (including photo and passed down ornaments 60+ years old), a computer, laptop, couch, entire seasons of clothes, sports memorabilia, soooooo much stuff from valuable to sentimental. This isn’t right.
Moral of the story, find a way to afford it. Even if it means going without a lunch one day a month (its only $10-30 a MONTH for renters!). If we had just sacrificed a portion of our food, we could have had insurance and not be living this seemingly unending nightmare. Again, such a relief to hear everyone is okay & happy that you have an insurance company taking care of the damages, Rachel! Things will be back to normal before you know it 💗

I remember going onto my sisters flat after her bathroom went on fire (faulty wiring in the extractor fan). The damage from smoke damage was throughout the house, and I was so relieved that she was not home when it happened! She hadn't set up her contents insurance yet as she hadn't long moved in, so had no help beyond family in cleaning everything, and it took forever to get the smell out!
I am so glad your insurance is helping you. Tske cate of your family, and take your time! X

We had a house fine when I was a kid and it was basically a 100% loss. The fire was mostly in the ceiling. It was the smoke and water damage that really took out most of our belongings but we were just happy to be safe.

I’m from Ottawa and had a huge house fire about 10 years ago. I was 12 at the time. It was an electrical fire after the pipes froze in the crawl space 🙃. like you the fire itself only burnt one room, but the smoke damage took out the whole house!! We got a lot of stuff thrown away, and a lot of stuff cleaned like you guys are. The smell of the items after getting cleaned with a slight Smokey smell stuck around for years even tho the whole inside of the house was rebuilt. So glad you guys are okay!!

So sorry this happened to your family, I unfortunately learned about smoke damage when I was younger. My Dad wanted to make French fries, but he got distracted and accidentally left the oil on the stove and it went up in flames. Again a small fire, damaged the stove and shield but the kitchen had to be replaced and there was smoke damage in almost every room. So not fun. Very glad no one was hurt, sorry about the mess. I know it’s heartbreaking hugs!

When I was a kid we had an electrical fire, as a teenager the apartment next to ours had a grease fire that spread to ours and several other apartments, and when I was in college our house got struck by lightning and the entire upstairs burned. Fires are scary under the best of circumstances and deadly because they can get out of hand so quickly. I'm so glad you're all safe and sound! Don't be surprised though if you continue to smell smoke for years to come. With every fire we've experienced there has been a professional cleaning afterward, but the sooty smoke smell never fully goes away. It is especially bad when we have really rainy weather. It's been over thirty years at this point and we can still smell it in this house.

My heart goes out to you and your family. On July 25, 2022 my husband and I lost our house to a fire that started in the garage. We still don’t know cause, assuming electrical but you are right when you say it’s unreal the amount damage that happens from the smoke. It was the scariest thing we’ve been through to date but luckily we got everyone out and are in a rental for the next year or so while we rebuild our home.

I understand your frustration through this! I had a house fire 8 years ago and lost everything!! My hubby had to jump out our bedroom window and I had to hand him our 2 kids one after the other then jump out. It was also around Christmas! Right after Christmas. It was scary and awful! We were all asleep hubby woke up to use bathroom thankfully! But because we were asleep we were all in shorts or tee shirts and it was so bad we had to immediately get out! No shoes or warm clothes and just strutting through the snow! Ugh... I'll never forget it! And you're right the smoke damage is unreal!! We only had 2 rooms not completely catch fire but still nothing was save able! I'm glad you are all okay! Fires are scary!

Glad you're all safe!!! If I could recommend anything it would be to toss your bras! You really don't want any of those chemicals on your parts. Many female firefighters get br3ast cancer - my friend and neighbor is fighting her cancer right now. I would also recommend all the women wearing bras at the time of the fire throw theirs away too (the ones they were wearing.) I know it's pricey but it's important. If you can't do that I'd at least recommend soaking them in vinegar.❤ My childhood house was smoke damaged from the neighborhood fire. It was awful. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. Candles are scary! :( I always make sure mine are 6" away from anything and always monitored after talking with my firefighter friend who explained that it's usually the glass that shatters and then causes the fire. Sending love!❤

Oh wow! I'm glad that everyone is ok. When I was 14 we had a fire in our garage. The gas tank on my dad's car got a hole in it when he was coming back from the airport earlier that day and the fumes met with the pilot light from the heater and boom. We didn't even know it had happened until we heard popping noises coming from the garage that were spray paint cans exploding. We lost our entire garage and the attic above it. We were out of the house for 2 weeks until the fire department deemed it liveable again. There were smoke stains everywhere, even in the furthest corner of some of the closets. Everything got professionally cleaned and painted and it was like nothing ever happened except for smoke alarms now being way too exciting and over stimulating.

We had a flood and it destroyed everything in the garage and the lower level of the apt. Nothing could be saved but photos on the walls. It is really hard, but gets better. It is ok to grieve. This happened 15 years ago and only 3 years ago did I stop panicking every time it rains.

Fire safety tips: if that is a real wreath it looks like there is eucalyptus- which when disconnected from the tree are very flammable. (The bowl factor could of also lead to reaching the auto ignition temp) If the advent wreath was synthetic I would suggest Chris gets his lungs a check up occasionally through out the year just to be safe if toxins were released

I am so glad everyone is ok! My parent's had garage fire last year that spread to the house. They lost everything. They ran out with what they had on and the landline phone to call 911. No shoes, no jackets, no cellphone, in -40. You never really know how you will react in those situations until you are in it, so maybe it was a blessing you had so many people there to each have their own role. Starting over and rebuilding has been difficult, but we just remind ourselves that it was just "stuff" (even if some of it wad sentimental) and that we are incredibly lucky everyone is safe and that it happened during the daytime.
Sending good vibes to you and your family that any renovations, cleaning and replacement is dealt with quickly (and painlessly). ❤

Oh Rachael, thank God your all okay. This is why I hate REAL candles. There are too many wonderful candle alternatives that look like the real thing but are safe to use. The only time I burn a real candle is if it is a well contained scented candle, and I only burn them where I can keep and eye on them at all times. That had to be so scary for you. Fires are super scary. We’ve had 2 smaller fires but still very scary! We had what the firefighters called a wall fire. Then a few years later the crockpot caught on fire. It was scary! The flames I saw and the thoughts going through my head were insane. My dad threw the whole crockpot outside and poured water on it. I had no clue smoke could cause so much damage. We had to have the kitchen repainted, floors were able to be cleaned, stove replaced, some pictures and stuff that was on the walls had to be thrown out, the table had to be replaced. So glad you guys were all safe!

We had a small fire 20 years ago, I was 18. ... I put the fire out with an extinguisher- but the amount of smoke in the house was insane. Because I went back in after calling 911 and put the fire out they tried to take me to the hospital for oxygen. It was crazy. Like you, everything had to be cleaned and removed. I'm so sorry you're going through this but I love your outlook. I'll be keeping you and the family and my thoughts with hopes that everything goes smoothly here on out! ❤️

oh no, i'm glad everyone was okay and most things were salvageable. fire can be so crazy, it's amazing how much smoke that made when it didn't all burn.
my mom was a kindergarten teacher and there was a small office next to the classroom and one year, a kid had come to school with a lighter and set the hungry caterpillar book on fire in that small office. it eventually started to smell like smoke and they managed to put it out but there was a burnt mark on the table until the school moved into a new building. it's ironic because the fire alarm was usually so sensitive that a toast burning could set it off.
