    This shows why the shortest gears aren't always the best. If the engine stays in it's power and torque band on normal gears, shortening them will only mean more gear changes for the same results. Shorter gears help if an engine drops out of it's power between gears. The ITR 'box is already close enough to make sure this doesn't happen so closer or shorter ratio's will only slow it down thanks to the extra gearchanges and the gaps in power to the wheels they require.

    It's so crazy and nostalgic to watch these old videos of cars from 20 years ago revving until there's no tomorrow. Meanwhile, I've now grown up and my daily driver is an electric car with no real transmission and no revving motor.
    I still have my Evo for race days though :)

    Now, these are the Honda engine I know. Not the barely-over-6000rpm-redline TLX typeS engine

    I bet the car with the “fully tuned” transmission would have been faster with a stock final drive.
    Having the high gears close together would still serve well on a long straightaway.

    Gearing is a matter of how your car makes power, just going shorter is not always a good idea. For example on my jdm ep3r I went ahead and did a k24 bottom end with the k20 head, with the stock gearing which was already short all it did was wheelspin, we ended up going with a mixed ratio gearbox utilising a tsx 2nd and 3rd gear which had longer ratios. Instead of doing 90kmh in second and 120 in 3rd I was now doing 110kmh in 2nd and 150kmh in 3rd, with the longer ratio the car was able to put the power down with less wheelspin, the k24s make a huge amount of torque, so the longer gearing helped with this.

      Adding power will always mix up the engine speed and revs, for example I changed the final drive on my s2000 from 3.9 to 4.44, but when I added more power and went with k24 swap like you, the revs it was in a certain gear when it was stock power was completely off with more power

      @Andrew-xz8yp that's because stock k series run with a 4.7 final drive. I kept my final drive and changed the gear ratio

      That’s an underrated setup . I had this back in the day and used to beat or keep up with gs-r’s . Once I got the itr I didn’t look back and beat up on anything bseries

    well, i changed my usdm 99- 00 si cluster which cut me off at 8600 rpm to a 98 ek9 cluster which cuts me off at 9000 rpm. it looks like an inaccuracy in the cluster so i think these engines are really only reving to 9k.

      You must have missed where they put in a spoon ECU which has diffrent power band from the stock ECU. Thus allowing it to rev to 9500. The Exhaust intake and header help extend the power band plus if you change the timing you can prolong the tq from falling off. The ECU was prob built around the spoon cams but whats a motor to these guys. As far as I know Spoon has never swaped the valve train on any of there engines proving the head is built for serious abuse as long as you dont give to much lift to the cams.

      You swapped clusters and they swapped ECUs... that's your issue

      @@petrolhead8851 and also not all clusters are accurate. I found that out from a 98 civic cluster to a 00 em1 cluster swap

    im assuming the valvetrain is stock and they're able to rev the engine to 9500? also ive seen them in these videos rev the stock itr to 9k but other times only to 8500, how?

    • @miroshi
      @miroshi  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Power_of_R In this video, all ITR's got tuned ECU, two from Techno Pro Spirits, one from Spoon. I'd say the rev limiter was raised +500rpm.

    • @power_of_r6033
      @power_of_r6033 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so the stock valvetrain can handle 9k huh, i'd be a bit nervous to do that on my itr engine.

    • @itsjussjerry
      @itsjussjerry 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Power_of_R 9000 shouldn't be a problem on stock itr valve train. idk about 10000 though....

      +miroshi i used to abuse my gsr and had only spoon ecu. i race it daily and took it to 9k rpm for 2 years until the engine blew up.
      itr can do it forever
