    Ye know - buying one of these bikes in the present day (from small start-ups) probably feels like when people bought bikes back in the day that the original classic bikes were built - they were start-ups back then too.

    • @markplain2555
      @markplain2555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ghfiytdcoliuo8 That I likely true. But you are referring to people who have become 'trader's in Chinese bikes. This video is about start ups who are true entrepreneurs: they have a dream, raise what ever scrap of capital they can get, build their dream and go to market. Will they survive? Well they have the exact same odds of surviving as the original bike builder (less than a 20% chance)

    Here's the problem - In the UK, the Super Soco TCX
    starts from about £4400, has a top speed of around 60 MPH, & a range of
    around 60 miles.
    A Honda CB125F has a starting price of around £2800, has a top speed of
    around 70 MPH, & a range of around 500 miles on a full tank.
    Fuel prices might be high, but the difference of £1600 goes
    a long way on filling up that tank, & don’t forget that electricity also
    costs.
    For more serious Bikers, the fact that a 650 equivalent EV, with a range of less that 100 miles to boot, & will cost 3 to 4 times the price....let's get serious, it's got a long way to go, if at all.

    i remember starting to look at electric bikes around 2010 and wondering how long it was take before they really hit the market in a big way. i probably should've at least bought one that's also a pedal assist style but it's wild to see all these companies going for a 100% motorcycle feel a decade after I started looking

  • @stuff0music
    @stuff0music 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Two things. By now I’m sure you have heard of Zero motorcycles. The other thing is, good luck pedaling one of those home with a flat battery. If any of those bikes with pedals are any good they would have a system called walk along/behind call it what you want but on the last of the battery it will assist you pushing it home if needed.

    • @bartmotorcycle
      @bartmotorcycle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yeah that's a really solid idea. The thing that sucks about Zero from what I've heard is that their range isn't what they say, like in practical situations its about half what they claim. Would be cool to see them release a retro styled bike! but yeah cool idea for sure!

      @@bartmotorcycle Read the small print about every range or milage claim made anywhere or do a bit of common sense math about battery capacity and power needed to have faint traces of fun at highway speed. I'd guesstimate 13KWh/100km. Are Zero really worse than others or the only ones with published reviews?

    To be honest I don't like any of these. They try to imitate a petrol bike, but they aren't. The old bikes from the 60's are so iconic, because their design was utilitarian. The Gas Tank was on top of the carb because it is the simplest method to fill up the carb without a fuel pump. The engine was build in an open way to make the air run through it in order to cool the engine. But all of that is no longer needed. A truly classic electric bike would follow the utilitarian philosophy. But now they are just electric trains trying to look like a steam lokomotive. Sorry for typos, i am german

    Unfortunately, as far as I know in the UK. . . . anything that has electric power and no pedals is illegal to operate without a license and or off-road. Different nations within the UK. Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and England will enforce the laws differently. But essentially the idea goes if it has pedals the electric component is seen as an additional aid to go up hills and not the main source of power. Unfortunately, no ones going to make a sick-looking 125cc with deployable foot pedals any time soon so this is why it keeps the innovations and market low.
    This is also why electric scooters are being confiscated from hapless kids and adults alike that genuinely just want to live their best lives. Yet here we are, we can't have good things.

    Hi Bart 🙋

  • @krelis77
    @krelis77 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The range isn’t acceptable and the bikes are way to pricy if you ask me. It would be great if electric motorbikes are getting te same upgrades like ‘normal’ motorbikes, like luggage bag’s, a faster chargingport (in the netherlands we use 230v 35A as a standard for homes and most of us are now switching to a 230V 3x25A so charging power enough) and a way better range. The range is the most important to me. If it’s bellow 300km it’s not worth it. The Energica Ego+ is getting a decent range by now(420km or 260 miles) and has a fast charger on board). The BMW CE 04 is also a cool ‘retro’ 🛵 but the range is way to low to become interesting. Zero motors make cool bikes also but is way to expensive when doing upgrades to it. It’s also a strange thing to buy a motorbike and when adding more range you have to pay extra and some software does the job. The battery was already there… Your type of motors are the retro styled motorbikes and I think it would be better if companies transform old motorbike to electric instead of making new. Nevertheless great footage about these new retro motorbikes 💪👍🏍⚡️⚡️⚡️

    All of these E-bikes are too expensive for what you get. They need a longer range to serve the biking world. A quicker charge time is also important. I ride a gasoline motorcycle today and I average 250 to 400 miles a day, so you can see these e-bikes just will not work for me.

    I hate to say this -- but if the Chinese decide to get into this market, I think they will sink a lot of startups and prevent the big manufacturers from participating.
    They pay ridiculously low wages to their workers and the workers are driven to produce. They will ship the bike directly to you; along with a nifty catalog of spares (replacement batteries). You assemble it and license it, you ride it.
    They're already doing this with tens of thousands of products.
    There's no such word as "anyways."

    There is no excuse for the price of these batteries. Even in low quantities NKON sells some from reputable suppliers that would be way cheaper. EG if it's a 3.5kWh battery pack that is delivering 8KW (12HP) peak You would need a pack capable of delivering 80A at 100V. IE 40S 8P arrangement. EG the LG INR18650-HG2L 3000mAh - 20A at $1700 the lot. That would actually get you 3.5kWh (320 x 3.7V x 3Ah). So why is the pack near $7000?

    Ranges are disappointing. We’ve come along way in range for auto this last decade. Bikes should be further along by now.

      @@theeschatechannel2854 yeah agreed. The biggest problem seems to be the inability to just throw in loads of batteries the way you can on a car. I do think the whole swappable battery thing all the japenese companies are working on will help

      Unfortunately since the late seventies, maybe eighties, motorbike design has been all about trying to appease a certain customer! The companies all do their marketing and gather " information" on what they think their customer is looking for. When they spec out a new design, its all about how it looks ! The problem is that the bike designers are not proper bikers! and now its all style over substance!! Case in point, my BMW R Nine T scrambler 2017 new!! Looks very retro, and it looks very " cool" . However the front mudguard is too short, had to buy an extender, there is no rear mudguard , so the shocks get covered in mud and shit. Had to buy a rear mudguard , which wasn't longer enough either, had to by some shock covers too! And to get at the battery you need to strip half the bike!. The same with trying to change the air filter, remove the tank, FFS ! To keep my bike charged up over shutdown, I had to hard wire an electrical socket to trickle charge the battery. I know as a designer myself, that certain design layout decisions and compromises need to be made! But at the end of the day, simple maintenance things like changing a battery and air filter shouldn't require a freaking TH-cam to show you how to dismantle half the bike! So yes, Bike designers, have a lot to answer for, and the need to make the bike look good, normally ends up on the account of its everyday practicality!
