  • Some old and not so old pictures of Big Loads on the move.
I remember Dad ( Tommy Bradley ) here in some of the pictures and especially the ones I took next to the Volvo and Daf ). Sometimes he could be away for weeks if he was driving a Contractor from Newcastle to London and then up to Glasgow. He used to send me to buy cigarettes from a machine to use as a thank you if he was able to get a lift home instead of staying in digs. The wages were poor and they had to do the best they could. Men would arrive at our home with Dad's Pay Packet so that Mam had enough cash to feed us. No bank accounts in those days.
I have been with Dad installing an electricity transformer once and when I was 8 years old got a guided tour of the flight deck of a Scammell Contractor. Wow!.... I can still smell his overalls. We especially liked it when Dad had been to Scotland because he always brought us back some Edinburgh Rock. Summers that went on forever, Austin 7 Ruby that didn't and caravan holidays in Eyemouth.

Brilliant, Pickfords and "Burly Chassis" in the same video!!! I remember seeing many Pickfords "Pull and Push" combinations travelling down the A3 when I was a kid.

My dad worked for Carter Patersons then BRS and then PIckfords. He did all the abnormal loads . In total he worked 50 years and PIckfords gave him a wall clock with his name on it when he retired. He's 87 now and has lots of photos .

My Dad, George Smith, worked for Pickfords Heavy Haulage for many years from the St Mary Cray, Orpington Depot. He became a Gang Leader. He transported the Big Guns that were then installed outside the Imperial War Museum at Lambeth. Also had pics of when he transported an Elephant. The variety of work was fantastic and he would always come home with stories of the weird and wonderful things he transported.Does anyone remember him ?

we happened to aquire a set of old tyres, from 1 of the trailers, they were in sets of 4, we would have lots of fun standing on the top to see how far you could walk, until I decided to get in side and started to roll down hill < I could have been killed, the driver operators looked class driving them machines, everyone in Walker would stop and watched a prickfords truck on it's way down to the tyne with that massive turbine on it's back destyne to some where in the world, happy memories

Hey Contesa32 - I can't believe I have seen this video - that's my GRANDAD at 0.23, 0.45 and 1.47. He has been dead for around 25 years, so it has been great for all the family to see this. His name was John (Jock) McNeil. Did you know him too? Did your dad or grandad? Where did you get all these pics?
