    The days before the madness of health and safety. Not a single flashing light to be seen.

    We marvel at the modern multi-wheel trailers with hydraulic power steering & being able to adjust the height of the huge loads at will, but we see here trailer steering with a very low-geared handwheel.
    Marvelous examples of British engineering, coupled with the skill, teamwork & unflappable patience of the drivers who also probably had no power steering to assist them.
    Thank you for sharing this with us.

    I have a still wrapped "PICKFORDS ROAD MAP OF WESTERN EUROPE" . It belonged to my wife's uncle, J. Rutter, who was a/the manager of Pickfords Heavy Haulage and died in 1999. Would anyone like it, I don't want to throw it away. I live in West London.

    A fitting tribute to British Egineering indeed. I well remember outsize loads regularly travelling up Yarm road ( I was at school at Richard Hind 69-74) usually hauled by the wonderful Scammells of Pickfords, and sometimes Sunter Bros. My dad was a Turner at Ashmores in the sixties and operated what was then (allegedly) the largest lathe in England. So sad that so many geat examples of British Engineering are now but an increasingly distant memory. Thanks for this.

    A lot of parked cars, circulating traffic, nosy bystanders and lot of obstacles! Despite this the transport arrived at its destination. Nowadays there is much more expensive action to reach the same.

    Very impressive. Used to see these heavies pulling low loaders down the Bouroughbridge Road York ~ they were impressive and very beautiful to a small boy. Although think from an engineering point of view the hole edge distance on those vessel flanges is a bit small ~ less than 1 diameter!!!

    Plenty of familiar locations here. That's the Blue Bell Hotel on Acklam Rd, by the way. It's still there, and still called the Blue Bell, although the famous roof sign with the image of the Bell is sadly gone. (The sign briefly said 'Motel', sometime at the end of the '60s, until somebody grew up).
    The roundabout on Broadway at The Magnet was interesting. It had a road through the middle, just for large loads, and closed-off with level-crossing style gates at all other times.
    What's that bloody row in the background? If you can't find suitable music, you would be better off leaving it silent, rather than risking ridicule with that bilge. This is my native town's history, not a circus.

    great vid ,i live just outside yarm and have heard of massive loads been transported via yarm from stockton to ici from this era!!!!!! just seems a long way round! and a difficult one too,can you shed any light mally?

      Sean W Palmer it's mainly about clearances. You don't want to get stuck under bridges, or on crests in the road, or on corners. Another factor is the weight limits on bridges you want to cross. This loafd looks to tall to go across the Albert Bridge over the Tees between Stockton and Middlesbrough.

    Wow - amazing accomplishment for the time! Idea: Maybe we should the public should watch this before moaning about being 'held up' by an Abload today.... :-)

  • @mally75
    @mally75  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    apparently weight limits & some realy tight corners so this was the ab/load route

    Who chose the music? A less relevant ‘song’ is hard to imagine. Compare the care and thought shown by the Pickfords crew compared to the cavalier attitudes proclaimed by the son. Let alone the fact that the music is completely out of period for the film.
