My country is USA-lite and going hard on Full-usa, so i guess it's kinda "fun" to watch my own future.
To be fair, US politics are such a fucking circus (with global economic ripples, yaaay) that between the sheer entertainment value, and John Oliver being an unreasonably charismatic treasure of a human being, it has its draw for the rest of us, haha.

Exactly, it's like that one girl on tiktok a few months ago who was like "I'm not a feminist. I can cook, I like clothes etc etc" (and kept on saying stuff that honestly almost everyone does and enjoys) and we were all like "yeah girl, feminism gave you the opportunity to express all of those thoughts in the first place"

As a junior doctor/intern I was harrassed, victimized and bullied by a a senior colleague and the board did nothing because it was it was just a collection of doctors at her level. It would never be allowed to happen in any other field. Needless to say, it changed the whole trajectory of my life and career
Unfortunately, it does happen in other fields. At least in Astronomy. Dr. Angela Collier made a 2-hour video about it. It's probably happening a whole host of fields, but it's never talked about in detail, because as long as those fields self-policed by older men, there isn't much that can be done about it... There are also toxic incentives to keep quiet about it. I mean, there was a whole #metoo movement about it.

I did manage to pivot and did a masters in health informatics /digital health at a prestigious university and I am about to start a Phd in Innovation in the Healthcare sector
It's terrible like the internship/training isn't demanding enough as it is..
I'm a geriatric nurse, we often get to "fight" with peoples interception that it's ok to abuse staff, esp nurses. I'm at my work to help people, not to be harmed & abused..

As a future nurse. We are regularly taught in nursing school to be cautious because if something goes wrong the doctor will definitely blame us and the hospital will most likely side with the doctor and not us.
I love, love, LOVE how fast the C-Span anchors reacted to cut off the caller the moment they knew where the conversation was going. Like, they only got to "peen" and already the anchor went, "Okay, let's move on!"

Edit: I find comfort in being well-informed about life, in general. It's easier to digest information with the way John Oliver's show presents complex issues. Finding comfort in knowing things does not mean that I do not feel other emotions over the topics and issues.
Weird, because it makes me laugh but also makes me nervous with the topics addressed.

I appreciate this story so much and hope people will be forewarned..I suffered a Dental nightmare in RI way back in 1994, that eventually resulted in my having to sell my home to pay for reconstruction of my mouth ...Which was never right again..I would later learn that the Prosthodontist I was referred to had lost his License in MA but was allowed to move his practice to the nearby state of RI ...I contacted the regulatory board only to be threatened by them that I could be sued for defamation ...Lawyers I contacted told me there was no way they would take a malpractice case on contingency because they knew that no Dentist would testify against one of their own..they called it “Circling the wagons”....John Oliver is doing a real service by highlighting medical fraud in the US...Healthcare and Dentistry are 2 of the biggest businesses in the US with almost no significant oversight..
Sometimes I look at people like Mark Robinson and think, "He CAN'T be a real person, can he? He HAS to be a shock comedian doing a bit, right?"
I feel the same way about Tommy Tuberville. That's not a name of a real person walking around here in the real world. It's the name of a bungling hayseed from a cartoon in the 80s!

I’m so glad I can still watch these on TH-cam after HBO announced they wouldn’t upload episodes here soon after airing. Can’t get HBO in my country and wouldn’t be able to cope without my weekly dose of LWT.
Yeah they kind of bungled the announcement. If they had said the delay in posting meant we'd get full episodes I think people would have been happy -ok with it or at least not angry.

@@danbsports6760 my way from home to work takes from hour to hour and a half. So listening to Oliver’s voice is worth taking it on normal speed
what he doesn't talk about is the strenuous and VERY expensive process (well over 10k, if you're doing specialization it can run well over 30k) cost of getting your medical license. Every doctor has been through this and is hesitant to take away licenses for this reason. I think the whole thing should be reformed.

Can I just say I admire that one journalist during the C-SPAN section who reached down for the end call button before the guy had even gotten to talking about his junk? That was the dead-eyed stare of someone who has made a career of dealing with crazies. This man and his colleagues can probably spot them within the first 5 syllables of the call, and I'm sure they desperately wish they couldn't.

I'm a doctor in a small town in Mexico, there is this gynecologist here that loves to do C-section because he makes more money and he has a long history of screwing up 2/3 of every surgery he does, at best the women end up in a hysterectomy, at worst they've died, I was his assistant on one C-section while I was an intern and it was horrifying to watch his he handles the uterus, no wonder the patient has so much problems with bleeding after.
He was fired from every hospital in here but still practices in the private sector, and he has kept screwing up. We don't know but everyone here believes he came running from the capital of Mexico to this small town because he was in big trouble there.
It's super scary how he has so many lawsuits in this small town but he keeps practicing (with other malpractices).
I'm sure he will soon leave this town to go to the next one and start from scratch
As a physician on the executive committee, I can attest that it is imperative that the data bank information is made available prior to giving a physican privileges in our hospital. I cannot phantom that this is not done in every hospital. That is very scary indeed!

I started watching 9 minutes after its release here. I had an important exam two hours later, still I watched it. I couldn't finish the whole video before my exam- some minutes were remaining. Now, I came back to complete it. Anyways, thank you, John!

Didn't expect to find out that House MD was more realistic than I though today. But here I am, suddenly everything House got away with seems a lot more reasonable.
Medical boards should also have nurses as members. We are fighting for patient rights against the doctors every day. We are professionals at it. But that would of course never happen, because that would be the worst nightmare for doctors. They would actually be held accountable by people who understand healthcare, actually care for the patients and who have no peer pressure to let them off easy.

Im American and several of my family members are doctors. I’ve spent most of my life surrounded by doctors. One thing I know for sure, they are mostly exceedingly arrogant, unempathetic, narcissistic, and incompetent in essentially everything outside of their fields, and probably in their fields as well, in the case of too many doctors. My experiences in the US, particularly with the healthcare system, influenced my decision to move abroad. I am much happier now, and feel much more safe and fulfilled, than I ever did living in the US. If someone tells you to leave the US if you hate it so much, take their advice!!!! The grass is actually greener in this case

"Public Citizen's Health Research Group, a consumer and health advocacy lobbying organization" co-founder, would have made a great guest appearance for this story. 40+ decades of fighting for something that hasn't seen significant improvement or change..... more people need to put their hats on this ring.
