Definitely. I’m amazed how many people I talk to nowadays who can’t handle a movie longer than 2 hours or thought that Oppenheimer was boring. I think the Tik Tok rot brain is real.
My wife and I had subscriptions to both AMC and another local West Michigan theater chain (Celebration Cinema) as soon as they offered it and held them for about the last 5 or 6 years. We recently cancelled our AMC A-List membership for a bunch of reasons: First our local theater was not playing all the movies we wanted to see - including the recent re-releases that studios are pushing and the award movies last fall. In addition to this, AMC doesn't seem to be investing in maintenance. There are broken seats & bathroom stalls, stained wall shrouds and floors, ripped seat cushions and headrests... If the experience is scary or gross, it's no longer fun and certainly not special. For now we've continued our Celebration Cinema VIP membership because they have invested in upgrades, keep the theater clean, and play the special releases.
Missed the livestream, but very excited to watch this podcast! As a borderline broke college student, I gotta ball on a budget, but I find movies at like 13-16 bucks, that usually are 20-26 bucks just by researching cheapest theater around me and cheapest time to go. In terms of snacks, I am deciding to go watch a movie at the theater, for me I’m going for the movie, the snacks are extra and I’ll survive without food and drink for 2 hours. I’m not gonna hold myself back from watching a movie because cost of snacks
The church-going experience we remember is gone. People talk, play on their phones, and you don't have to deal with that at home, and now because of the distribution changes you only have to wait two weeks for home release. Furiosa will be HUGE when it hits streaming. But it just makes me sad, the theatrical experience is my heart.
There were some teens that snuck into my Furiosa showing (they left randomly in the middle). They were talking and someone yelled to shut up. When they didn't stop, dude stood up and shined his phone flashlight in their face and went "SHUT THE F*CK UP." Not another peep lol
thisis the main reason why i like to see movies at my local Alamo theater in El Paso. it’s a total movie nerd place, has great food, and fun movie events that you really don’t see at huge theater chains, ie Regal, AMC. it’s a safe space for 🏳️🌈 and the tolerate ZERO bullshit when people are loud or making noise. it’s one of the few movie havens around.
Most theatre experiences are now just unpleasant. There are just so many devices that people keep on, and sometimes people literally talking on their phones, in addition to light from texting, surfing, etc. Instead, yeah, you can wait and watch at home on a nice TV. There are some exceptions, but most chain theaters just aren’t worth it.
Great stream as always homies!! I have soooo many thoughts so I’m to leave several comments (for the algorithm!) My advice to theaters: reframe the argument. It’s not high ticket prices vs waiting 3 weeks for VOD/streaming. It should be: what else can you do outside your home for the same cost or less? What else can you do to get away from your roommates/family for less? Where else can you send your teenagers to hang out independent of parents but in a safe and supervised space for $10-$20? Where else can you sit in the AC for two hours in comfort without spending a fortune? Where else can you listen to a loudass film on full blast without pissing off your neighbors? Where else can you get out of your head and get work/world and life problems off your mind for a couple hours (and maybe a couple hours after?) What is the value of making NEW memories? Sitting on your couch and scrolling is the same shit every day and years on end are the same fucking memory. A theater is a semi-sensory deprivation space where you can slum it in your pjs by yourself and it’s fine! Or you can make a night of it w your homies and have the perfect thing to talk about all night after over drinks. They gotta reframe the prospects and get people out of this mindset that going to a theater is the alternative to waiting for VOD. VOD can’t compete with what a theater can actually offer.
Oh man, the moment cap picked up the hammer I almost hugged a complete stranger next to me and he looked like he was going to do the same 😂 . That whole theater was all in on that experience together and it was so fantastic.
Streaming came to put a "dent" in the whole theater experience, but not even a full shutdown due to Covid-19 could end theaters for good. With that said, maybe it's a generational thing, but me being Gen X, there is a special feeling about going to the movies--with all the setbacks like kids crying, noise, (cell phones became a nuisance late-90s/post 2000s), etc. I love cinema and going to theaters because of my dad; it was like a ritual to go every Saturday after my futbol games as a kid. I don't think I will ever stop going even though I don't have much time anymore. For example, the chills and experience of that first Lord of the Rings movie, the "hell yeah!"s during the first Taken movie, Avengers Endgame, to name a few, wouldn't have happened in the comfort of my home. I do go to a much cheaper Regal cinema ($6.25 per ticket before 3:00 pm with their Regal card) where I can stash candy and other goodies so my expenses are not that high. This will keep me going forever! Dude! I remember the "Ultra Star" theater in Chula Vista that played 3-month old movies for like $4 and hotdogs, sodas and popcorn was like $2 each. That was heaven!
Considering how garbage movie ettiquette is now, I'd be willing to pay more often if they started enforcing rules more. There used to be an Alamo Drafthouse near me and it was awesome (just not awesome to their employees, apparently).
Thank you guys for the ideas on choosing times earlier to see a movie. I do not want any part of a 50 dollar night at least with my wife and I, so this was all rad to hear.
I was an AMC A-List member. For $20/mo I could see a movie a day. Went all the time. To save on snacks, our AMC was at Northpark Mall in Dallas, so I would keep a GAP shopping bag in my car. I would carry in my own food in the GAP bag. And if they were to look in the bag, I covered the snacks with an old pair of khaki shorts. Worked every time!
Just wanted to say that I didn't think Adam was in any way being ableist. Either way, good looking out Agustin and I appreciate the clarification. Regarding specifically movie theaters, it has to be a special movie that I will regret not seeing in theaters for me to even consider going. I do wear a mask the whole time, which sadly means no snacky snacks but I do pick up some snacks on the way out to enjoy on the ride home. I wish the movie theater experience was more widely available to more people; whether that is theaters doing a better job of marketing their discount days and special events or more support from the studios something needs to be done if we want to preserve this American past time. Thank you for all of your discussions, they are always thoughtful and enjoyable. Hope yall have a great summer!
I have friends and co-workers who are not going to the movies, but for different reasons. Some say they can't afford it, but they won't go to movies on Tuesdays. Others say they don't even know what's showing or coming soon. But they won't go on social media, TH-cam, or download the app to see. And one guy I know says he won't go to the theater unless it's a 3D IMAX experience. He doesn't care about the cost, he wants the premium experience he can't get at home. When it comes to losing butts in seats at the theater, there's a lot of bleeding from many wounds.
I went to a theater once where I could order food and I ordered chicken fingers(tenders) and they had alcohol so I ordered a drink too. I saw Prometheus. Lol Was cool. It was Hollywood Palms Cinema in Naperville, IL 😊
I agree with researching before going to the movies. My theater has a 7 dollar/5 Dollar Tuesdays. Where every movie even the new ones are seven bucks for everyone and 5 dollars for some of the concessions. I get it people want to watch a movie when they first come out but fit yourself to your budget.
My issue is most of the movies I have seen in the theater recently have looked really blurry or dark. I feel like theaters aren’t keeping up with the maintenance of their projectors or bulbs. So, it does look better at home… and that’s a shame because I don’t want the theater experience to go away.
I feel the onus can never be on the audiences, they will do whatever is best for them. Cinema business is a product and service company, if people are not showing up than they have to do something or die. Today audiences have so many options for entertainment sitting in the house, you need to excite them to leave the comfort and come to theater
1:07:05 I am very sad about this. I have tried to share some of my favorite movie experiences with other family members, but they are so checked out of the experience that they miss so much of the story that they didn't have the full experience and didn't enjoy it the way I do.
Alamo Drafthouse offers season passes at different tiers ranging from $10-20 a month. Where you can see up to a movie a day for only $1 using the pass. With tax you could see a movie every day for a month for a total of $80-85.
Framing is a powerful thing. Theaters and studios need to reframe the way people think of the cost of a ticket. Example: A gas station near me can offer 10 gallons of free gas to the first 100 people in line and people will wake up early, get in line at 4am and wait HOURS for $40 of free gas. If you were to offer them $40 straight up, no where near as many people would show up or get up early or wait for hours. The way people frame the cost of gas in their minds is powerful, and distorted from reality. Why is $40 worth of gas worth MORE than $40 cash? It isn’t. Why is a movie theater ticket overpriced? It actually isn’t. And I argue this as a broke person. Movie theaters are about all I can really afford. Restaurants, concerts, travel is all too expensive for me now. Not to mention most people I know who say movie tickets are too pricey now are the same people overpaying for takeout all the time with DoorDash and GrubHub. What is the actual value of a thing? What price can you put on getting out of your own head for a few hours? That is priceless to me. Framing is a powerful thing.
Guys I think everyone knows about discount Tuesdays. I know in my area teen mobile offers customers free movie tickets on Tuesday. But as a working adult, Tuesdays suck going to the movies lol my daughter is busy with school so weekends evenings only time we have to go. A lot of folks are in similar situation. But a lot of my friends all say the same thing, movie will be out in streaming in a few weeks anyways, ill just wait
You guys definitely have good ideas! As someone who worked at AMC, the concession stand is where they made the money. I want AMC to be better promoting the films, I've seen films in the theaters that hold special memories to me, like with Jaws, Fifth Element or Ghostbusters for the first time with my family and friends. Definitely get rid of the Nicole Kidman promo or do something better! Great chat this was
Just started watching but wanted to say I am so glad someone brought up that the pandemic is still going and if theaters could make it a safer experience, more people would go. Include that safety with cooler lobby experiences! So many things could be done. But at the same time what I’ve learned is that even a while industry is not going to make that effort “on their own”.
Odeon cinemas in UK I believe are owned by AMC. Same sort of thing applies that people have been saying. But I pay £17.99 a month and can go as many times as I like, to any film any time. Premier seats and largest screen. It's a great deal here in the UK. But, if I miss the film in the first week due to life, sometimes it's then pulled and I miss it. Streaming is killing cinema and also people don't know how to behave in cinemas now. Talking, constant bathroom breaks, on phones. It's maddening.
1:29:27 why i dont go out to the movies. Money. My income doesnt allow me for many recreations. I only make enough for groceries and bills. My life revolves around work and Dialysis. Luckily i have access to sone streaming services. But the last movie i saw in theaters was Wonka. Loved it for throwback nostalgia. Love the stream you guys are one of my go-to's for reviews and reactions. Keep it up.
Movies in the theater are a for a certain age range and economics. Teens, college age and couples dating are the customers now. families can't afford to pay for streaming channels and then have money to go the movies. Even as a teen in the 1970's I don't ever remember going to the movies with my family. from the age of 12 we went in groups. Now that prices are much higher and we have the patience to wait for it to come on streaming. we used to go every weekend to see whatever movie was out. now I have to want to see that movie. Fall Guy I wanted to see, but was waiting to see it the next weekend. I really liked it. Furioso, I could care less. Planet of the apes, also. Only reason I saw Oppenheimer was due to the great actors in it. Barbie was just a fun movie to see. Phantom Menace was fantastic on the big screen. we saw it again.
I know US and UK culture differs, but I wonder how much of the issue is about location. Cinemas in town and city centres are typically smaller but have the option of attracting people on impulse. They could be shopping, caught in the rain, bored, finishing work, etc. Multiplexes seem to be capital D Destinations and require a plan: travel, parking, etc. I'm a committed film fan, so I'll travel regardless. Families, teens, randoms... Maybe they need fewer logistical barriers to be convinced.
That being said, I've seen all the MCU movies multiple times, just at home. I'm glad I watched Endgame at home because I was a complete and utter mess & would not have wanted people to see me like that lol. Full on ugly sobbing.
This summer is stacked. I wanted to see furiosa, but just saw planet of the apes, inside out 2 and minions is about to come out. Bought my Deadpool tickets already. My wallet can only handle so much lol furiosa will be on streaming in few weeks anyways
There are no small movies in theatres anymore. It's all big $300m epics hoping to make a billion back, and anything less is considered a fail. That's absurd, and the wrong lesson to learn from Marvel's past success. If they want ticket sales to go back to how they used to be, they have to go back to releasing the variety of films they used to.
Movie theaters used to be for the working man. It was something that anyone from any financial background could go to. That’s sadly no longer the case and it hasn’t been the case for years.
Super late on the video but I want to thank you guys for talking about this, it seems like everybody is talking about the death of the movie theater movie theaters are my church I think Cinema will be okay and as long as Cinema survives I'm okay with the movie theater dying. People will find ways to have that communal experience regardless whether it's having large viewing parties or getting together with their families Etc what worries me more is AI killing Cinema
I think the number one reason people like Greg don’t feel like going to the theaters to see Furiosa or Apes…is because of COVID!!! Covid made us used to chilling at home & streaming movies for 2 years basically. We can’t underestimate how damaging the pandemic has caused the movie theater experience. I read somewhere that theaters lost 20% to 25% of their customer base…..those people would rather stream their movies than go see it at the theaters.
The studios saw that Netflix alone was making more money in a year than all of theatrical combined, AND Netflix doesn’t have to split profits. The studios wanted a piece of that pie and have killed theatrical in the process. I don’t see a path back to theatrical success just by backtracking, unfortunately. They effectively reframed the value proposition to “theater vs home viewing” which was never the case in the good old days. They need to reframe that value proposition once more to “theater vs never getting out of your house” The next Avatar isn’t going to make 2 billion dollars by going straight to streaming. The studios need theaters for that.
Personally, I think TH-cam has some responsibility for people not going to the theater. Even Kevin Smith can't play his own movie trailer in his own live broadcast on TH-cam because they shut the live down immediately. If people are getting their movie reviews through their online community (whoever it is) and their online community can't advertise the trailers there is no incentive to going to the movies. Refusing to allow people to show trailers is stupid.
People who don't do the most basic level of "research" boggle my mind. If a minute of "work" (browsing a website instead of doomscrolling) can save at least a dollar, that extrapolates out to saving $60/hr or more.
I went to a theater once where I could order food and I ordered chicken fingers(tenders) and they had alcohol so I ordered a drink too. I saw Prometheus. Lol Was cool. It was Hollywood Palms Cinema in Naperville, IL 😊
And growing up in Minnesota, there was a dollar theater. It was $1.50 to see older films. Not old films but like Adam said three month old films. Like that.
Smartphones & social media has absolutely changed our attention spans while watching movies/tv….for the worse. No denying that.
Definitely. I’m amazed how many people I talk to nowadays who can’t handle a movie longer than 2 hours or thought that Oppenheimer was boring. I think the Tik Tok rot brain is real.

I have soooo many thoughts so I’m to leave several comments (for the algorithm!)
My advice to theaters: reframe the argument.
Where else can you get out of your head and get work/world and life problems off your mind for a couple hours (and maybe a couple hours after?)
What is the value of making NEW memories? Sitting on your couch and scrolling is the same shit every day and years on end are the same fucking memory.
A theater is a semi-sensory deprivation space where you can slum it in your pjs by yourself and it’s fine! Or you can make a night of it w your homies and have the perfect thing to talk about all night after over drinks.

Man I miss that North Hollywood $2 theater. When we were living off ramen, it was a lifesaver for me and my roommates
What I like about Prague is the fact that there are several small cinemas that do more than just playing latest movies
Streaming came to put a "dent" in the whole theater experience, but not even a full shutdown due to Covid-19 could end theaters for good. per the research part, if anyone lives in DC, a few theatres have discount prices all day on Tuesdays!
In Baltimore City there was a discount theater on the north side that had $1.50 movies.
Most chains have cheap Tuesdays. $5-6
I went to a theater once where I could order food and I ordered chicken fingers(tenders) and they had alcohol so I ordered a drink too. I saw Prometheus. Lol

Someone changed their baby’s diaper in the theater during my screening of Furiosa.

it’s the pricing, ridiculous how expensive it is now
Can’t do it guys. Maybe next stream I’ll stick around, but I’m so anxious from the glitchiness

I just went to the theater today to go see civil war. I had 2 friends go as well.
Black Panther is also the last movie I've seen in the theater.
That being said, I've seen all the MCU movies multiple times, just at home.
I'm glad I watched Endgame at home because I was a complete and utter mess & would not have wanted people to see me like that lol. Full on ugly sobbing.

Y’all keep bringing up AMC and they just closed near me. The closest AMC is 105 miles away.
They need to reframe that value proposition once more to “theater vs never getting out of your house”
The next Avatar isn’t going to make 2 billion dollars by going straight to streaming. The studios need theaters for that.
Adam saying concerts aren’t special experiences. 😂😂😂 Okay, maybe with your musical taste…
Maybe you guys should just, like... watch more movies. They are out there, bros. Quite easily out there.
Are people still worried about covid?
I went to a theater once where I could order food and I ordered chicken fingers(tenders) and they had alcohol so I ordered a drink too. I saw Prometheus. Lol
Was cool. It was Hollywood Palms Cinema in Naperville, IL 😊
And growing up in Minnesota, there was a dollar theater. It was $1.50 to see older films. Not old films but like Adam said three month old films. Like that.
This was 80’s/90’s. The theater in Naperville is still there and I went there in 2012.
