- VICE founder Suroosh Alvi recently traveled to Gunpo, South Korea, to try out the Method 2 prototype, a hulking manned robot made by Hankook Mirae Technology. Weighing in at over one and a half tons, and standing 13 feet tall, the Method 2 looks like something out of science fiction.
Specifically, this exoskeleton robot looks like something you’ve seen in a movie, and that’s by design: Hankook Mirae Chairman Yang Jin-Ho and his team collaborated with a Hollywood designer to make the Method-2.
Jin-Ho spent $200 million of his own money on the project, and claims his creation is the world’s first manned bipedal robot.
The robot is designed to mimic hand and arm movements, and is suspended by two metal cabals in the ceiling to keep it balanced.
So far the Method-2 is only used for fun, but its creator envisions it will play a critical role in future crises.
“It’s more likely it’ll be used in fires and disaster relief situations,” Jin-Ho said. “But also find application in military operations.”

I wonder why the military would be interested - what advantages would this have?
I can't see it being successfully armed for combat because it's a big tall giant target without armor and even with armor its easier to hit than anything else.
But for a lot of other situations sure, this would absolutely work - one of the better options would be to redesign the system to function well in flood conditions - having that height and adaptability of a humanoid form could make quite a difference.

the fact that this only cost them 200 million is dope, in other countries they wouldve upcharged investors by like 1000%
it needs a hip joint system in my opinion, that will make its walking a lot more stable and stabilize the torso as well making it a lot less shaky.
You are right but lets not forget how heavy this thing may weigh before they start building them with more high tech lighter materials. They are just perfecting the basics first before they can go all out with the leg issues. Perfecting new tech without a manual takes time. In ten years more time this thing will be running down the street.

It can, the cables on top are loose and only work if it falls over. They don't want to break a million dollar mech by falling. So it's there just in case like using Bubble wrap on a vase for shipping.
Just needs jumpjets and a weapons platform and I'll take 5 for my security company...

I, for one, am glad that we live in the Patlabor timeline. It's curious that they only mentioned disaster relief, firefighting and military operations as applications while completely ignoring it's potential in construction.

Xxx88Xxx One of the advantages of using a machine like this in construction is that it'd be able to easily and precisely maneuver select pieces of heavy equipment into place for installation into spaces that a larger piece of machinery couldn't access.
I'm thinking something like lifting and installing an industrial A/C unit into a location a large crane can't easily reach, or working within the confines of a narrow urban environment. It wouldn't really replace heavy machinery, but instead work in concert with them.
As far as stuff like the cables go, that's just a design issue. Future iterations probably wouldn't need them as improvements are made to mobile power supplies and self balancing systems.

this thing isnt going anywhere.. theres no market for these kind of thing, arms on tracks are more effective.
We were so preoccupied with whether or not we could, we didn’t stop to think if we should.
It would make a good vehicle to fight from great distance from over the horizon where it would not be exposed. Or in a city enviroment (possibly). On an open battlefield without sufficient cover it would not survive.
Are we going to get Mechs before we get another good MechWarrior game? :p

There is a way instead of using those control grips is to change it to a wrist thing can't explain it but it should make is easier if u don't feel like holding the grips for a long period of time
It can have some mobility system inspired into KnightmareFrame from Code Geass
He said only armed forces and movie companies were interested.. I would love to see this used as some sort of transportation system for traversing Mars. It would protect the astronaut from Mars’s atmosphere and be convenient for day to day operations. Especially if you got the movements down so precise to where you could use this for maintenance purposes as well. I hope NASA or some other space agency someday finds interest in these Mechs.

This is cool and all but if it is to be used for rescue the robot will need to be able to walk on uneven terrain which it doesn't seem to be able to, its size will make difficult to get into buildings. I can only see it being useful for lifting things

It doesn’t need the cables to keep it balanced and walking. It’s only for safety.
So when do we get an exoskeleton which is powered, stronger and faster than a human, and can operate untethered for either support or fuel? Because this looks a long way off from that.

Why do they always move so slow? Can't we make something with a little more velocity in it's basic movements. I feel like that would help it maintain better balance aswell, so you don't have to balance on one foot for a long 6-7 seconds at a time.
