True to Consumer Reports form, not a whisper of Toyota's latest reliability woes. I am starting to think the Sun is a better source of reviews.

I was surprised by Toyota too but if their information is truly from customers and a year behind it may show up next year. And I hear that Toyota is replacing the whole engine which is the right thing to do.

In 2013 I bought a Mazda 3 Hatchback I4 - it was nimble, safe, comfortable, and wickedly fun to drive. The 2.0 Liter with the 6 Speed Auto was ultra reliable with 35 MPG. I sold it privately after 11 years, it was snapped up within days. I bought a new Mazda with the same engine (2.5) Liter 4 and 6 speed Auto. Its the same: nimble, and wickedly fun. The "SkyActive G" engines and the Auto (no CVT here) are 'old school', but have decent power, with no turbo . Great value if you like small cars...

I bought a Mercedes S-Class decades ago. It was built like a tank and I never had any problems. All the recent Benz' are rife with problems. Sad for a car that was the gold standard. German cars aren't doing very well. VW's are bad, Audi's are hit or miss. The only reliable make mostly down the line now are Beemer's, although it will still cost an arm and a leg to maintain. I stopped buying luxury cars years ago, they were just a waste of money. I now drive a modest car, and it still has features I could only dream of in my old Mercedes.

We have a 2022 jeep compass with absolutely no problems in 3 years of ownership. Never paid much attention to consumer reports. If I see a car I like and want, that's the car I'm getting, no matter what they say.

As a previous owner of four BMWs, I concur. Not only did the cars become ugly, but their engine bays are now filled with plastic engine components which fail. The engine in my 528xi self-destructed because the plastic timing chain guides got brittle and failed, despite getting the car serviced as required. My first BMW was durable, I had put well over 200k miles on it before trading it in. Two relatives had told me that their Mercedes were really expensive to maintain. And Volkswagens, the former peoples cars, are now disposable. My very first car was a VW bug, and it ran forever. It was only replaced because it had no air conditioning. The term “German Engineering” now means that the car will reliably break down.

Consumer Reports is elitist liberal rich snobs. They seriously think a teen's first car should be a 25k Corolla. Yeah, my MOM drove a 1970 Toyota Corona 4 speed with no air, 120k, gas tank for trunk floor, gas cap behind license plate. I had a 71 Dodge Dart Swinger. We survived. Both were reliable. Their snobbery probably existed then but today it's totally evident.

To Ford Bronco owners. On breaks. Do or not. Try this. Change the break routers to a high-speed router that is vented. Break shoes to ceramic. I had to do that to my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Result. I had to stop once quickly. It trashed all four tires. Tore all the belts in all four tires. The tires were all season by Firestone. Only two years old and very little mileage. Very good tires. Extremely better brakes.

Warranty accruals is the best data out there but it needs to be obtained from the automaker’s financial statements because that is data they don’t like to share. At the end of the day, CR data is superior to no data whatsoever which is what most people have.
I find interesting that people like to counter incomplete CR data with no data at all.

I just picked up a dodge dakota RT 5.9 for 3k and am putting some $$ into it to make it my daily. At 6-8k it has so much more character and personality than anything new.

Grand Cherokee for 8 years now, had 1 issue with rear camera that was fixed shortly after buying it. Have Jeep Gladiator, much of same parts as Wrangler and zero issues after 3 years. The biggest thing I worry about with new cars though is the elaborate infotainment systems where everything from radio to heater is tied to it.

all modern gas cars are moving towards smaller engines and adding turbos and CVTs, therefore all modern engines will not last many miles than their older engines of the 1990s and 1980s. This EPA mandate is making cars last shorter in lifespan due to harder working gas engines and high heat along with plastic parts in the engine bay. It is not worth buying a modern gas engine anymore if you care about keeping your car beyond 10 years, it will just not last that long anymore. I still have my 40 year old 1980s Hondas and Toyotas. LOL
