Believe me, it didn't need the "genderspecials" to ruin it. It was doomed from the start, once you actually realize what it is and who was behind it. They were never going to succeed. They rode the hype, and it's a miracle they didn't crash and burn harder than Ex Arm.

@fashmoog6071 Of course it was bad. But in spite of how bad it was it was, for the time, still impressive.
It's like how a five year old's drawing is technically terrible, but you still put it up on the fridge because for a five year old it was a lot of effort.

@@sneff212 The trailer was good for what it was back then. Thats like calling Metal Gear Solid 1 awful for having 32 bit graphics. Its fantastic given the limitations, RWBY was their first ever "real" in house animation project and they didnt have the resources that they had come seasons 3-4 (there was a dip in resources come volume 5, but otherwise, the only real permanent hit to the show was in the fight choreography; Everything else stayed about as good or bad as it was before Monty's death except for the writing, which has always been a quality roller coaster from day 1 [but on average has been great on paper, shit in execution]).
I say "real" given that RT Animated Adventures pre-dates it, but thats not meant to be something on the same scale as RWBY.
Its also worth mentioning that Monty produced the red trailer in, like, 2 weeks. It takes me more than two weeks just to finish a fucking full color drawing (granted, i'm a hobbyist, but still). Its no less impressive than people who are capable of speed drawing sketches in, like, 10 minutes. The fights after the red trailer in RWBY contain some of the best fight choreography in anime on a technical level period.

The only real positive of RWBY was that Monty Python was a master of animated fight choreography on a dated animation engine, beyond that it was just an indie show with soul and potential.
Then it got corporatized, the chief animator died leaving the team with only basic knowledge in an outdated engine, and the show proceeded to lose its soul with the grifters that took over. It died before it could really fly.

RWBY is a concept from Monty. It's a concept created to display absurdly cool fights with absurdly cool characters, all of that produced with more or less 0 budget and with more or less 0 cares about anything else. The good old Monty experience. It's experimental but cool, and was mostly successful at just being that.
The issue with RWBY is that, of course, Monty died when it started to become alright, which removed the "cool fights with cool characters" part of the equation entirely. Then the random guys in the writer room decided that, if they couldn't do cool fights with cool characters anymore because Monty is dead, then they could just invent some boring whatever story. At the same time, ironically, that the budget became slightly higher.
Thus you'e got the weird trajectory of RWBY - a series that was midling and skirting around through sheer coolness of fights and heavy tropes overdose, losing coolness, fights, and tropes for slightly better production values and a story that is genuinely one of the worst I've ever read. By this point, any fan left are just surfing on nostalgia.

  • @flipsvstheworld
    @flipsvstheworld 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Monty was never in charge. Only wanting to specifically work on the fight scenes, and I believe certain characters fighting each other for ehatever reason. He shoved all responsibility to the other two. Having them come up with the universe, world, story, personality, and direction.
Monty was hired because of his hyper fighting 3D animation which was impressive back in the pre 2010s.
As for the first 3 seasons of RWBY, they aren't as grand as people claim it to be. It was something new looking that had potential. The fight scenes were cool, and the music tended to slap well enough for buttrock standards, but they never had good writing or fully entertaining aspects. It was bad writing that had no real direction besides "we need to give reason for cool fight scene number X."

I know RWBY is overhyped but Monty coordination in fights were the best part.
Of course they didn't age well for how they look, but that is not taking into consideration how Monty did everything on his own with nowadays ancient software.
Had death not took him he would have only made his skills better, even more with what the tech brought up.
His fights were pure fights, no bullshit talk, no montain of close up that don't show anything or slow-mo every 5 seconds, no lensflare, every motion had a thought on how it should appear and in what it would flow after.

Pippa isn't wrong, the early RWBY episodes were literally done with MMD models. They had to redo them after the game went into early access and people realized the models were using stolen assets. Shame about that game too, apparently it was MUCH better in the earlier versions. They neutered the combat in an attempt to be more Arkham.
But yeah to anyone curious, Monty Oum made a name for himself with a series of animations called "Dead Fantasy" which was a DOA/Final Fantasy cross-over video series. It was JUST fights, no dialogue, and people loved it. Then he said "Hey how about instead of me borrowing these existing characters, I make my own in MMD" and that became RWBY. Literally the entire reason it exists is for the fights.

Takahata101 talked about this when he was almost got involved. The project was already being hijacked before his death. While I liked the fight scenes, the writing was just fan fiction. Apparently two of the very new writers had self-inserts who all the girls loved, but for me, the whole "cheating to get into the academy" and the food fight scene were what killed any interest I could have. Something about Rooster Teeth just attracted the wrong kind of person and that's coming from a season 1 fan of RvB. Going pro was a mistake.

One of the few sane takes here. What the writers didn't understand about the show is that the plot was only ever supposed to be a thin contrivance to connect Monty's rule of cool fights together. Trying to turn it into a serious socio-political drama with janky-animated teenagagers was a fools errand that terminally halted the momentum built from season 3. Still no reason to hate on it completely like the syncophants below.

And though it was low budget Monty Oum's choreography transcended the low budget. I know you say you don't like the fight scenes but I happen to think the fist 2 seasons had some amazing ones. it was perfect for people who were already fans as RWBY was voiced by some of the more prominent members of RT. Also 2. Burnie Burns created RVB who is a founder of Rooster Teeth. So no, their mostly known content isn't from a third paty. The whole reason they got so popular was from RVB series in 1st place that they uploaded to their site because youtube wasn't a thing for another 2 years. There was a bunch of hype for it when it released. A lot of people really liked the music and lore, and it's art style was very unique for the time, using 3d models in a way that's somewhat less janky than most 3d media at the time. Even the way it was presented was unique, with episodes of varying lengths and tidbits of lore being released individually alongside the episodes.
Not to mention that it's from the same people/company that made Red Vs. Blue, another 3d show that got insanely popular due to its comedy and overall silliness, so all that hype carried over.
All in all, if you look at it as a project done by a few people it's pretty nice, but compared to an actual show with a real budget and production team, I can see how it would look like a big pile of rough edges

The fight scenes were good on first viewing, but then after that, you started to notice some jank in there that made it less than stellar.
Then, theres the story. It wasn't all that good before, but man did it nosedive in Volume 5.
That's not even talking about the characters. Ruby is the main character, yet get less screen time than her friends. Blake is annoyingly preachy and cocky for her own good despite being a reclusive person. Yang has the same problems with Blake, with the only difference being she's much more outgoing. Monty had exactly one talent; he was incredibly good at coming up with and stitching together BEATS of fight scenes; his brain was a bottomless reservoir of blows and counterblows, and he was just competent enough with animation software to kinda make models do what he wanted them to.
I often compare his stuff to old stick figure fight scenes; where there's no character, no context, just a blank slate tearing through a million mooks, turning every motion into an attack.
But that was his only talent.
Sure, he could drown you in sheer volume of action, but his characters rarerly moved as if they had weight or muscles or any real physicality, and he couldn't characterize his fighters through fights to save his life.
Every last character was the exact same flawless, gravity-defying, battle-ballerina, just with different weapons.
That said, RWBY was his first series, and considering that, yeah. Guy had chops.
I was actually really excited for the day he got away from all the yes men blowing smoke up his ass and ran into someone who'd...y'know, set him straight, maybe show him where he needed to improve. I had no doubt he'd eventually grow into a phenomenal animator.

As I said, Monty had a lot of potential. It's not surprising to have seen him grow between projects.
However, I still stand by most of my points. Maybe it was just the ones I saw, but while he fixed the weight issue for the most part, the RvB fights had even more egregious character issues.
Namely, I felt very strongly that those Spartan fights were WAY too gymnastic for Spartans; not just acrobatic, but downright flamboyant in places. It just didn't look natural for big, armored military types to fight that way. Really took me out of the experience in both cases.
And this has been a problem for Monty since as far back as "Haloid". His characters fight exactly one way; as flashy as possible, regardless of how natural it looks.
In RWBY this isn't such a big deal, because it's magical warrior maidens hurling themselves around with the recoil off their gunblades. With Space Marines, though? It just looks ridiculous.
I was really looking forward to seeing him branch out from that. Disappointed he never got the chance.

Also, Pippa definitely doesn't know Rooster Teeth history. Everything they used to make was 100% original, it got absorbed by bigger companies and the only thing it absorbed pretty much WAS Monty. RT itself genuinely started with filming Red vs Blue in a guy's closet.
That being said, RWBY probably never was great I'll give her that. I liked it a lot but for me it was a cool concept I thought had potential and soul was lost with the death of its creator.

First season was very rough but enjoyable, second and third seasons got progressively better. I actually enjoyed season 4 which is where a lot of people thought the show's downfall began- I still think that Qrow's entrance in the fight between Ruby and Tyrion is a certified badass anime moment. Possibly even the height of the entire show; it's certainly what I remember most. Then season 5, uh, had its moments... I checked out pretty hard by the end of it, that last giant clusterfuck battle scene really brought to a head a lot of problems which had been simmering under the surface. I never had the interest to come back and apparently it's little more than a PSA for social justice at this point with a couple scenes of girlbosses kicking guys in the balls or whatever sprinkled in to break up the monotony of that. RWBY was a fun romp for a lot of people in the first two seasons. It was somewhat unpolished but ambitious for an indie studio project which in turn made the series feel like it had genuine soul put into it which people respect. At the time the only other high quality fight scenes from non big companies were from sprite animations so seeing this original 3d anime styled series blew peoples minds and were all for seeing where it went and watching the team improve in a similar way RvB did. When Monty bit the bullet a lot of that soul went away and a lot of people are just seeing it through to honor the memories of a dead man.
I hesitate to call any piece of media bad and generally say that it isn't in your wheelhouse unless it's illegal, made off the backs of orphans or some shit like that. I know Pippa's been in the internet trenches for a while but I don't see her as someone who was heavily into the indie fight animation sphere so her take makes sense.

  • @nobuffer101
    @nobuffer101 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Ironically, I had a whole thing about writing in general. But it was so long it couldn't be processed. I have leeway for early RWBY since at the time it was a new series made by amateurs trying to find footing in a relatively new medium of entertainment. The beginning was always going to be bad, rocky at best. But writers should grow with their stories and work, it's only natural. It's a genuine crime against writing for someone for someone who isn't a professional to be satisfied with themselves and never taking risks and making something new. DBZA is strong proof of rocky beginnings but growing to something that actually influenced countless people, even helping those in the industry, and becoming something genuinely timeless, even despite its origins.
RWBY had that leeway but lost it when it's writers became satisfied with themselves. I have deep respect for Monty Oum as RWBY was essentially an outlet to let him constantly hone his talent for animation, and it's a genuine tragedy that we will never see what he could've been. When he passed on, and RWBY tried to find its footing without him, it eventually slipped into mediocrity and never tried to climb out. Throw all that in with the controversies that ensued, and yeah, RWBY only grew worse with time, unlike others in its era.
A whole lot more stuff like that and the importance of criticism to avoid self-satisfaction which leads to stagnation... blah blah yadda yadda.
Long story short, it's hard to respect something that doesn't even respect itself.

  • @nateroo1486

I will hold the opinion that Monty's fight scenes were pretty good, especially for the time. He shined most with the choreography and composition over the actual animation and i think most of the early RWBY fights, including the Red trailer, show that off well. Ill also say the weapon designs were fun in that over the top chuni anime kinda way. You also have to remember this was an indie animation made by one dude over a decade ago. For what it is, its very impressive and i can still watch the Red trailer and feel the hype. The actual animation, story, dialogue, pacing, theming, and everything else? Very bad and have always been pretty bad and overly derivative. The whole production pipeline at RoosterTeeth was a mess so im not surprised at how it ended up. I think DillonGoo, an ex-animator for RWBY, keeps that flashy choreography that Monty was really good at alive while giving it to actually really good animation and serviceable writing.

Also, their actions directly destroyed an entire kingdom and they stranded the survivours in what is canonically the most dangerous place in the world, rather than deposit them in Mistral or something.

Let's appreciate the early seasons of RWBY for what it really is. For a rough around the edges passion project, it was amazing. It was indie and folks tend to give works like these leeway despite it flaws. But if you're gonna treat it like any other normal story/show, then it will really suck for you. Pippa didn't give it any leeway, so all the mid parts of it are highly pronounced for her. The production was amateur, voice acting and story telling left more to be desired, and so are the others. Its saving grace was it's action and the weapon gimmicks.
It doesn't help that 3d animation tends to age like milk as the years go by, and the behind the scenes controversies of the show makes anyone less forgiving when trying to judge the show as a whole. Hence, you get a Pippa-like take about RWBY.

Kinda a big point yeah cause a lot of the doing it yourself vs you have to sign up for these big companies to actually do anything.

Doesn't matter how it was made, what matters is the end result. It looks bad and the story is bad, doesn't matter that it's made by a small studio.

I certainly like RWBY. ...As a concept. After Volume 2...things went downhill. Same kind of story screw-ups like in Gundam SEED. I've seen cooler sci-fi monster hunting in God Eater, and those bigger SOBs messed me up in the PSP days.

Imo rwby when it first started was just good, especially for a youtube production at the time. But yes it only got worse and worse after Monty passed away.
