I think giving her a win would be pretty cruel to all the singing contestants. It was like telling them all their hard work, effort, or talent is nothing compared to a genetic birth defect. And what's worse is that there are deaf singers out there who are actually good (google Mandy Harvey on got talent). What they did was pretty fucked up, because it seems like they put her there just to laugh at her and make fun of her.

Brazilian here: "Bicha Muda" is a low quality comedy character here. The singing contest was real but her participation was only a comedy sketch done by the tv station.
The one thing Pippa is wrong (and almost the entirety of these comments) is about how Brazil audience works. Bicha Muda is a VERY famous and well known comedian. She used to be every weekend on a comedy TV show called Pânico na Band, probably one of the biggest comedy shows in brazilian history, where she would basically do exactly what you're watching here. Producers put her there knowing exactly what would happen, which is NOT people feeling pity for her. This is an absolutely internet-brain troll mentality nation, and brazilian audience will try to fuck up everything if we are allowed to have a say in anything. We do that in politics all the time (brazilians already "elected" to office multiple dead people, zoo animals, etc). And on that note, Bicha Muda almost won to be a State Representative back in 2012, but was removed from the election on accusations of not being mentally fit. All that being said, it's NOT true that she won anything. Her presentation was an one-off just for the joke and she wasn't even participating on the show. Americans discovered this 15 year old clip and ran with this narrative of "anti-woke" thing. You gotta stop that guys...
I agree. Nothing but disdain for the people who would use others like this. There's nothing "moral" about using other people for glorified brownie points. "Inspiration Porn..." that's... I hadn't considered that term before. It's rather fitting.
This is what happens when you refuse to ever tell people that they can't do specific things. I'm extremely myopic and colorblind, so I can't become a pilot,a surgeon, an artist or anything else for which good vision is required. Is this bad luck? Of course. But it is what it is. My youngest brother simply has a low IQ (because our mom was too old when she had him, he was an "accident"), so he'll never be a doctor or astrophysicist. Is that unfair? Yes it is. But by not telling people their limitations, you're only making things worse. Because eventually, they're going to learn it through reality. Reality doesn't care about your feelings, and it'll mercilessly show you your limitations. Is it really better to tell me: "Yes, sweety, you can be a pilot!", only for me to find out that this statement wasn't true when I cause a plane crash due to not being able to distinguish between a cloud and a mountaintop? Is it better to tell my brother that he'd make a fine surgeon only for him to find out that's not the case when he accidentally removes somebody's heart instead of their appendix because he was bad at memorizing medical diagrams in textbooks? Of course it isn't. Letting people meet their doom by telling them everything is fine isn't "being considerate", it's being a coward and a bad person.
Being disadvantaged doesn't mean you can't perform an activity, sure, you are less likely to be good at it and extremely unlikely you'd be of the best, but that alone is not a reason if that is your pursuit. What people are advantaged and most likely to be good at and what people prefer to be doing are often in opposite sides, however if you want to do something, but you can't because you'll likely be outcompeted due to your disadvantages you'll only end up miserable for life and likely prefering to die over existing for naught. That being said most people don't live for their activities alone so that's not commonly the case. Sight can be corrected and not necessary in being a pilot, a surgeon or an artist. For those you need the ability to act upon a machine, a body or a canvas. So your physical interaction, knowledge and mental abilities are more valuable. IQ is also not a good indicator as memorization can be compensated with diagrams you follow on the spot and you can have notes at the ready instead of relying on your memory, you will also have others beside you to help if there is a problem a lot of doctors and astrophysicists do in fact have a below average IQ, yet they are still working in their area of choice. It's only a question of whether you will be outcompeted and incapable of compensating your disadvantages enough and being humble and not always expecting to be the best of the best.
@@Ali-cya this is just a bad take, there are certain things that certain people just can't do. To use GayusSchwulius's issues as an example if he tried to become a pilot without telling anyone he had those issues (which is the only way he could become one because those would automatically disqualify him) he would be putting people in actual danger. I get that you shouldn't let your disabilities stop you from doing what you want to do but your thought process would just lead more people to pain.
@@TheGreatMaou Yours is a bad take too. They don't disqualify you for simply having a disadvantage, they disqualify you for not meeting some requirements after testing you. A doctor is better than no doctor, a pilot is better than no pilot. If an area is too competitive even a 'normal person' wouldn't be able to compete. Your thought process is what already leads many people to pain. The pros outweigh the cons, a doctor that saves 1 life but fails to save 99 others has still saved 1 person where otherwise it would have been 100 people dead.
Yeah. You can see what the intent was. The “heart was in the right place” etc. but they valued their message, their moral statement, over this person and it ended up being pretty cruel
Remember in Fairly Odd Parents when Timmy's Dad tried to participate in some women's beauty competition and then win? Yeah, that's supposed to be a joke instead of a prophecy.
I agree with what Pippa is saying. If you can win competitions with pity points alone, it poisons the well. It's no longer a competition at that point. And let me guess, they're going to ask for donations for this person as well and then come a month's time, we find out this woman didn't see a single cent of that donation money. I've seen this song and dance before. I'm sure this woman is really talented outside of singing, but we're not here focusing on what she's good at, are we?

It also accomplishes the exact opposite of what it's purporting to do for disabled people. This is the best inspiration you can show of what a disabled person can accomplish? That's demoralizing, not inspiring. I have a blind friend. Blind since he was a kid. Haven't talked to him in a while, but he blew my mind with what he could do. Anything that didn't explicitly require sight, he could do it. He led a fuller life than I did. He's a guy I'd put in front of an audience of millions to inspire: "Look what you can accomplish in spite of a disability. Maximize everything you _can_ do." The funny conclusion about that guy is that I don't talk to him anymore because he could be kind of an asshole, especially during our D&D games, where we met. But I never felt like I needed to treat him like a kid or an animal because he was blind. His attitude earned him the same reaction it would have coming from anybody. And in retrospect, I thought "That really was the most equal and humanizing relationship I could have had with him or anyone: to feel free to deem someone an asshole based solely on their personality, regardless of their circumstances."
I have a question, how did he read his dice rolls? Like, we're they indented/inscribed deep enough for his to feel the number? Where they made with Braille instead? Indented our outverted pips? I think there are so many stories to tell about this, and I want to hear them.
Dyslexic people can manage with a couple drafts of editing (lord knows I need more than a couple), blind people can "feel" their way through art and painting if they're good enough and use some unconventional methods, and the deaf can make music if they do things like transfer the sound directly to their inner ear with an iron bar (looking at you, Beethoven), or otherwise "feel" their way through the sound. Having a disability needn't bar you from any form of expression, but only if you take the time to figure out a path that lets you capably work around your personal limitations. This is just a totally incapable person being propped up on stage for moral grandstanding purposes.
Everyone who wants to really understand what people with disabilities think about this kind of thing read the book "No Pity". It goes over everything related to this in a much more understandable way.

Brazil has a weird history of both praising and accepting trans people while at the same time hating and ridiculing them. It is weird duality. And it is often on TV as well. This one in particular was a meme, ridiculed outright. Putting her on TV mixes both, because they parade her like a clown and at the same time pretend that it is progressive.
It's the same thing as here in the States. The upper class, more progressive and sheltered types enforce the adoration and acceptance of this type of stuff and think everyone needs to join in on their praise, and the lower class, more conservative and rugged types who have real struggles such as trying to end up not being decapitated by a street gang while walking to the store for food, who normally would not really care one way or another about the existence of a trans person who sounds like a dying cat when they sing, foster an extreme resentment for them and anything associated with them cuz their progenitors, the upper class self serving progressive yuppies, act like it's the most important thing of this generation and if you don't worship it you're evil and deserve to suffer. So it ends up looking like this strange divide.
@@mello6311 For the most part, I agree with your statement. Though as someone from the other "side", I'd like to offer my perspective? It may be based on personal experience, but not just my own. Actually most of the people in the community that I've ever heard of tbh. Twitter and the trans community have the same relationship that Pippa explains between between this show and the disabled. The community actually has no voice and, for the most part, does not want any attention or pandering. In fact, the community is often frustrated and complains about the pandering specifically. We are taken advantage of by the rich on both sides and seen as mere objects(though imo that applies to all working class citizens, both right and left). The problem is that we have no voice because of both the low profile stance the community at large seems to take and also because there are so few of us to begin with. We make up less than 0.1% of the population here in the states and the 7 billion global statistic in general. Because of this, it is incredibly difficult to make any meaningful impact on public perception regardless of political views. Even then, many on both sides do not want to listen, and spin narratives for votes, profit, and even just clout on twitter. I personally have yet to meet anyone from the community that isn't upset by twitter. Myself included, obviously. Despite the occasional friction on important issues, I have managed to hang onto friends among the centrist to right crowd as well as the left and even far left crowds. I myself used to be a conservative years ago, But now I am considered left or even far left by most Americans. As exhausting as it is to maintain relationships and argue with friends on both sides, It's offered me a lot of insight into how both sides think. I agree with you that a lot of conservatives actually are indifferent towards the trans community. That indifference sadly ranges from soft indifference(agreeing that we should have our basic freedoms as Americans and may transition medically, blah blah blah) to Hard Indifference(cold and uncaring). However, There has been a massive surge in transphobia and extreme views in recent years. If you've heard of the "Deutsch emails" or "2600 pages of hate" that were leaked on may 8th(2023 for those in the future), I personally believe they have a LOT to do with it. I myself am fleeing the country because of this surge. Republican or Democrat, The parties do not care about you or me. If they did, our votes would matter and both of us would have our freedoms owed to us all as loyal Americans and Human Beings.
@@ellie_ex at the end of the day most of it is performative support with lack of knowledge, blind if you will and that complete lack of understanding is exactly what people latch onto because it makes trans people look bad. Its crazy that being trans has been well known for years and years, but recently massive waves of trabsphobia has been amassing. I think before it was a case of like you said, not caring, people didn't necessarily believe they were a trans man or woman, but they did so without outright bashing their skulls in. It wasnt accepted per say, but not outright rejected, but now with The lgbtq growing ever larger, radicalisation has occurred on both sides where neither can come to an agreement on anything and outright reject facts. Each side acts like the other are fanatical lunatics to discredit them without engaging with them in order to clear things up. Ironically both sides are actually quite fanatical on the extremes but neither of those extremes realise it, while also roping in the less extreme opposition in with the fanatics to further make them look bad, it's a cycle of radicalisation and only creates further divide, which obviously doesn't help trans people. This happens with so many things, and this whole trans debate which doesn't even need to be a debate is just another thing for people who aren't remotely affected to fight over. I think the left is driving this however, because of one issue and that's the issue of them seeing themselves as martyrs. They look to history to point out examples where people had to take extreme measures in order to fight for their rights and use that to justify themselves, the issue is that they are only partially right, while espousing plenty of blatantly wrong information and demonising the people they should be recruiting. When women fought for the right to vote, they were in the right so it succeeded, the issue is that trans activists (and I say activists because trans people are rarely the ones to blame here) don't realise they are right to fight for trans rights and healthcare, but then push it too far with outlandish demands that aren't even relevant such as trans sport or bathrooms. They know these aren't particularly important, but just entertain these silly and inconsequential ideas give the other side munition to tear you down, you are trying to fight your enemy by feeding them bullets and it's beyond stupid. Okay I'm rambling on a bit so I'll stop, just wanted to point out that so called trans allies who really don't care are the primary reason for the massive push back, and now they've cause such a thing its almost impossible to reverse it, which is sad to see

people need to stop saying based pippa and start saying respectable pippa. This is not based, it's just fact I know it's a meme and it's fun, sometimes though I think I have to appreciate the value in her thoughts, and calling it "based" is not the way to show appreciation. Since that's a joke. It also doesn't even fit the definition sometimes. In cases like this if you genuinely find it based then it's promoting the idea that this should be an unpopular opinion, when in reality it doesn't stray too far away from the general consensus (don't let the internet define what's the general consensus either, that's silly). It's not out of this world to have that opinion or to convince someone else, I would put it at the same tier as saying Batman is the villain. I don't think it's disrespectful btw, just not serious.
Pipa failed to bring up the best argument for this case. When it comes to judging good singing the overwhelming majority of normal people can be considered disabled. Good singing is not something anybody can do and it's appreciated not only because it takes hard work to achieve respectable standards but also because the best singers are born with a special ability to bring out those harmonious sounds (ability which can be lost with time). If this performance is rewarded as good singing because of hearing disabilities, then what about the whaling of a tone deaf person?
The thing is Think about the other participants If I lose to someone with a disability BECAUSE they have a disability and "well they're doing great despite..." and it's this shit. I'm becoming a domestic terrorist

And it's a whole different case, because with the live orchestra you can feel the vibrations the instruments do (deaf or not). From what I've heard, this was supposed to make you laugh.
Well that was informative, thank you for the explanation.

Maximize everything you _can_ do."
The funny conclusion about that guy is that I don't talk to him anymore because he could be kind of an asshole, especially during our D&D games, where we met.

The blind painter and dyslexic novelist are up next...
when will they transition?
to be fair dyslexia doesn't necessarily mean you're bad at spelling and spelling errors can be easily fixed by software or an editor.
Im technically dyslexic, but my reading comprehension is average, but everything else is above so they say I'm dyslexic.

The funny thing is I heard other deaf people being awesome musicians, so it's okay to say that the Brazilian contestant sucks.
Yep
Beethoven was deaf.
This ain't Beethoven.
I'm coming in here with no context at all and all I care about is can she sing good?
Now time to watch the clip...
Edit: Okay is this a comedy show?
2:05
Pippa's eyes independently blink
Based.
She had to remember to do it vertically like how normal humans do.
Pippa is straight up a saint for not laughing her ass off.
yea, im obviously not as good as pippi...i seen that clip a day or so before this stream and i laughed my ass off the entire time lol
The Yoshi music makes this even more funny.
No you cannot try and out-preform Beethoven
And it's a whole different case, because with the live orchestra you can feel the vibrations the instruments do (deaf or not). The voice can emit vibrations too, but it's different since the vocalization lead the way we hear (that's why the deaf lady sounds like mumbling, emulates the vibration but not the sound).
This wasn't suppose to be a bravery contest or a pity contest.
