I honestly can't understand why this incredibly inventive and musically brilliant movie never became a major hit! Made in the era of Rocky Horror Picture Show, it perhaps was considered a 'copy cat' of that classic. But in reality, it was just as innovative on its own, and in my mind, just as commercial. I don't think it ever got the publicity boosts it needed! The music of Paul Williams is just insanely good, and he played a great part in it himself. All the members of the cast were perfect in their roles. It's always been one of my all time favourite movies!
It's so funny when people say that phantom is a rocky horror copy cat, because this movie came out first😭
This movie came out before Rocky Horror Picture Show 🤣 i was thinking about it the other day and came to the conclusion that it never became a hit because it’s just too artsy, it’s just too much cinema for the masses, u know? That and bad advertising, maybe.
crazy bc phantom came out before... and imo is objectively a better movie. Both are good and a lot of fun, but this one is also just masterfully directed and written.

The nostalgia of this. My dad told me everyday when he was little HBO would play this almost everyday and when I was a little girl he played it for me and my brothers and I just love the music and the story. ❤❤
The song parodies the posthumous success of Jim Croce. I'm writing on the 50th anniversary of Croce's tragic death, not by suicide (as in the song) but in a plane crash traveling to a new concert venue. RIP Croce. ☹
i think its also alluding to the Day the Music Died in 1959, the plane crash that killed The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, and most notably in relation to this story, Ritchie Valens the man behind the hit song La Bamba, inspired by the hispanic heritage he was raised around in LA. Ritchie was only months into his music career before dying tragically. the 50s doo wop pastiche i feel plays into that.
The event also inspired the song American Pie by Don McClean which is the biggest flag bearer for the continuation of their memory
its also wild theres been so many plane related deaths in music such as the Lynard Skynard crash that killed several members and passengers including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant.
also the crash that killed legendary guitarist for Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads
