- Photographer Steve Winter is used to working in tough terrain. But the urban jungle-Griffith Park, in central Los Angeles-has its own challenges, as he learned while trying to photograph an elusive big cat that calls the park home.

I will say, these are incredible photos! But, it's not "downtown LA". It's Hollywood. Still urban, yes but not quite the same. Downtown LA is all concrete and sky scrapers, like most cities. Hollywood has the hills, including Griffith Park which is 8 square miles of natural resources including an abundant population of deer. P22's biggest threat is probably rat poison that his smaller prey ingest.
What he is trying to convey is that, unlike any other Alpha city in the world, LA has a large cat living in the middle of the city, in our urban park....large urban park...but still in the middle of 12 million people.
Fantastic photography of the wildlife crusing a park in Central Los Angeles! Good job setting up the camera in just the right spot. P22, the mountain lion, has become somewhat of an icon for wildlife as it meets suburbia in California and is in the news again here.
I’m from mostly rural Michigan and this is heartbreaking to me-but also really cool, and amazing pictures of course.
I just saw one on zoo Dr going towards the 134 E entrance. Amazing! Around 12-1am
Awesome photos!
One of the best photographs Of the year. Great shot Mr. Winter.
Wow fantastic!
Wow, amazing shots.
Fantastic
Gorgeous shot!
Wow, gorgeous shot! Absolutely stunning!
This is an amazing story by a brilliant photographer. But is it just me or does this guy sound like he stopped off at the Library Bar for a couple of Gentleman Jack's before giving this interview? ;)
He always sounds like that...dunno why
Downtown LA is about 10 miles from Griffith park. This guy is high af.
that collar ruined it
Not quite downtown LA, but still surprising in a cool way!
Cool.

Last April a friend and I went to do hiking to Arroyo Seco park at Monterey County (near of the Pinnacles) and we saw fresh mountain lion pads. At that area you can find the animals that you can see at this video and snakes too.
Arroyo? heheh dat skool tho
very nice photos. hope to get some wolfs where i am at ;)
Dude thatz my pet +_+.....Lmafo!
Brave people adventure that park at night.

12/17/22 P-22’s final day.
Isn't that necklace too big on the cat ? why not just put a micro chip, i think technicaly it's possible when you see the size of a smartphone or a computer processor...
Its not a microchip, its a location device thing (yes english is not my first language). To track it, it needs batteries that can last for weeks or months.
woooowwww
P -22 ate koula
I went with a friend to Arroyo Seco (a park near of Monterey Ca.) for hiking last April and we saw a mountain lion pads, I was too worried because those animals are huge! Near of there at the Pinnacles park, my friend asked to a park worker if at that area might be mountain lions and he said no, but seriously I didn't believe it because I saw the fresh pads on the other park near of there. Later a friend told me that at the area there are the animals I saw at this video.
There's a collar around the lion's neck. Was he in capture before?
no thier born with collars in LA, i didnt know this?
81Kush hahaha born with collars around their necks? Their mums must have been working at a circus then. :D
6 years later but they do this to be able to track and monitor them and they give names like p-22 which means panther. 22
wow is all i can say
Why is the coyote at 1:37 transparent?
i dont know why... but... i remenber GTA V for some reason...
Roxas Miku because you can go up a mountain and run over mountain lions in that game.
Downtown LA is a distance away from the Hollywood sign.
Yeey
why is there a collar on the lion? the last picture they showed.

Whos Here because of joe rogan and post malone interview.
Looks fake to perfect
It’s not very encouraging to hear someone from National Geographic who can’t tell a downtown from a wooded park in the middle of an urban area. P22 in Pershing Square would be downtown. This isn’t even downtown Hollywood. It’d be one thing for ET to make this mistake, but National Geographic?
Calm down. The photographer was trying to capture the essence of a wild animal whose small habitat is surrounded on all side by brightly lit urban landscape. And he nailed it.
