  • Researchers studying biofluorescent coral also discovered a shark that reflects certain light, along with a stingray, eel, and other fish. The study, published January 8, 2014, used special lighting and camera filters to identify more than 180 species of marine fishes that exhibit biofluorescence.

    Wow. That is pretty cool. Now this is the type of videos that I would like to see more of from National Geographic. I am tired of watching these videos where they leave you in suspense just so that way you'll watch their channel either on TH-cam or on television.

    • @Lewa500
      @Lewa500 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, they are in their own right to want you to actually watch their TV channel. They need to get paid as well, you know. Otherwise, no NatGeo.

    • @AveMaria82100
      @AveMaria82100 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lewa500 Yes, I agree that they are in their own right to do that and I agree that they need to get paid. However, most TH-cam channels do not put up advertisements as videos like this.
      All I am saying is that if I want to watch advertisements, I'll search for advertisements on TH-cam or turn on the television. However, I did not subscribe to this channel to do that. I subscribed to this channel so I could watch educational videos, not advertisements.

    • @Adam-ni6ne
      @Adam-ni6ne 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AveMaria82100 This channel is pretty much advertising. Nat Geo is entirely a TV and magazine producer, so anything they put on here are either small videos like this to give a taste of the TV or actual advertisement.

    • @AveMaria82100
      @AveMaria82100 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I would like to see more educational videos like this one.

    I believe since most animals down there are adapted for no light, the light from these animals probably acts as a distraction, it's probably very bright to look at directly and hard to lock onto.

    Bioluminescence is common in ocean wildlife. Bioluminescence on land or in the sea is usually to attract food or a mate or both. Why is everybody so surprised? Never seen an octopus change color and texture in a flash? The Angler fish lure glows. Reflecting back a blue light should be a piece of cake. Bird feathers reflect all kinds of colors , why not scales and colored fish skins? We don't see all colors, doesn't mean they are not there.

    It can just be a by-product of an actually important funtion, e.g. a component of their skin that makes it tough or rough etc, that happens to also reflect certain wavelengths of light.

    Animals usually take the colours of its surroundings, therefor they get some of their camouflage from these corals. Animals also see differently to humans and other species...
    So this would mean all the open questions in this video are somewhat invalid.
