    I'm so happy to see more tutorials take on this approach! Particles always looks awesome, but hair cards in my opinion are just much more efficient and gets results much quicker.

    • @iJacques
      @iJacques  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly, I just wish that blender had more tools for working with curves, like being able to set the uv of the curves. That would make the whole process much easier... But for now, we're stuck with semi limited options...

      Thanks! We have the ability to make hair textures, so why not use them? Might not be as intuitive, but it does the job! If you're thinking about trying this, please take a look at my second take on this subject. I streamline the process quite a bit by making use of geometry nodes! th-cam.com/video/3tPdmf1veG0/w-d-xo.html I hope you manage to get some use out of it!

    Could also try: UV map hair card to plane geometry & subdivide (& edit geometry as desired) - use curve modifier to control geometry with curve (better control than just pulling around all the geometry) - skip texture coordinate mapping and use just the UVW editor in the first place, this might save a few steps, and let you build the nodes once without some of the spaghetti monster - also mentioned in another comment, separate diffuse/normals/etc when baking to simplify node setup 😊

    • @iJacques
      @iJacques  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good idea, but for me it had other downsides that didn't make it seem worth it.
      With this method, when you want to create a new card, you have to exit edit mode of the curve you're working on, select both the curve and mesh, duplicate it, select the new curve and then edit it (This also clutters up your inspector window). With the curve method, you don't need to exit edit mode every time you want to make a new card.
      The texture coordinate mapping is technically unnecessary, but it's good for previewing and using it for in-software rendering without having to do uvs. But if you want to export what you've made, you'll have to do uvs anyway. For the case of the curve method, you are free to stop at the spaghetti monster if you're rendering in blender, but if you're taking it to some other software, then you'll need to do the uvs. With your method, the uvs are probably done first, which is one of its upsides.
      I'm all for making things easier! If it would be easier for you to use 4 separate images, then I say go for it. But there are benefits to combining the 3 maps together. It frees up some space on your hard drive and it reduces the amount of memory that blender uses when rendering. I also feel that only having to deal with 2 textures is much better than having to import and deal with 4 textures.
      I'm by no means telling or forcing you to use my method exactly how I did it. If you see some way to make it better, great! Find a new way to do something? Amazing! I just wanted to share my idea and give the concept a go since I didn't see other people doing something like this elsewhere, unlike the method you brought up.
      Once all the initial setup of my method is done, it makes the whole process much easier, at least for me. Once it's done, you done have to do it again, simply swap out the images (2 in this case) and remap to your curves and maybe do uvs later on.
      Tldr: I personally find the method you mentioned harder and frustrating to work with than my method. The kinks of my method are easier to deal with imo.
      Thanks for sharing! 🙃

      Try also starting with just one hair card to simplify the process for yourself to learn your way around it. The node setup can be simplified, depending on how you’re using them and the results you want in render - he includes a lot of smart ways to make them easier to work with when modelling the hair, but there’s always several methods. Separating the texture maps when initially baking can make the node setup a bit easier too.

    Is there any good tutorials out there that has the full complete process of creating hair in blender. Since I am very new and don't know the interface well.
    I know a little of Chen for Maya. But I cannot find any good tutorials online witch explains the process of creating blender hair cards. From scratch. Your video is ok. But I don't understand anything that is going on because I don't know the interface.

    • @iJacques
      @iJacques  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, this process is a bot of a niche topic since there aren't a lot of people that use tools like these.
      This 'tutorial' isn't really meant to be followed anymore, as I created an updated version that is much easier to follow. It should be the second video on my channel.
      It essentially uses the same techniques, but utilises geometry nodes for some nice quality of life stuff and makes everything easier to use. Hope this helps!

      @@iJacques Hello! Ive got your awesome files, but they all are empty Blender-Files to me. Do you maybe know why?

    • @iJacques
      @iJacques  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hathekat Hi there! I suspect it has to do with the blender version you are using. I remember using blender 3.0 to make these files (I think. The version number isn't stored in the blend file...)
      I also remember something similar happening with another commenter, but I can't find their comment... (I may just be blind though)
      If you'd like to keep your current blender version, I recommend you download blender 3.0 as a portable version, meaning it comes in a zip file.
      You can look for the blender version you desire here:
      download.blender.org/release/
      Or get the latest version here:
      www.blender.org/download/
      Just remember downloading the portable version if you wish to keep your current version.
      Then, you can open the file with the 3.0 version, copy all the objects (ctrl + c) and then in the version of blender you are using, you paste all the objects you copied (ctrl + v). This works for all/most blender files as far as I'm aware.
      Or, you could update. As far as I know, all the blender versions I have ever installed all still remain on my pc since the blender installer doesn't remove the other versions.
      I hope this helps!

    • @iJacques
      @iJacques  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! I'm sorry to say, but I don't fully understand the question...
      Are you asking about the hair texture or about rendering the hair mesh?
      If the first, a hair texture can be created in the hair generator blend file and rendered out to a flat image.
      If the second, once you make something with the hair curves you can press F12 on your keyboard to render out an image of your mesh if you have a camera in your scene.
      Or, if it's something else, please do ask or tell!

    • @iJacques
      @iJacques  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah, okay. So, among the project files I have provided, you will see a blend file named "Hair Alpha Generator.blend"
      You can see from 00:19 how I use the file to create the textures I used. The method uses blender's own hair particle system to create the textures, so I recommend that you familiarise yourself with it so that you don't have to endure the pain of going into it blind.

    • @iJacques
      @iJacques  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! Don't worry about it! It's really no problem at all! I was a beginner too at one point, so I know the feeling of something breaking....
      So, the objects are pink because the textures that I used in the shader editor are missing. This is a very simple and easy fix however.
      If you have extracted everything that I provided with the project (textures included), then place everything in a folder and put it somewhere easy to get to. Then, in blender, go to the top left corner of the program.
      Click: File > External Data > Find Missing Files
      Then navigate via the blender explorer to the folder you have everything in. Select the folder and press the button "find missing files"
      In a little bit, blender should find everything that is missing, and your problem should be fixed.
      I hope this helps! Please do ask if you have any other questions or problems!
