I really like how green it is with the remnants of snow to contrast the mountainside. Curious how you learned so much about Japanese plants and foraging, from locals or studied them a lot?
If by study you mean in a book or class, then I haven't. I have been foraging for wild vegetables with a local old guy for more than 12 years now. Also mushroom foraging with him for about the same amount of time, though I'm not as confident with mushrooms. For the flowers, all the old people I sometimes hike with are encyclopedias on the flowers, so I've been learning from then. Also went with some local guides when I was guiding as well and learned some stories from the Japanese guides.

I was an ALT near Noshiro (in Happo Town) from 2001-2003 and it was the time of my life. I had some opportunities to explore the Shiramaki Area, but never did this hike. When I return someday I will put this on my list! Thanks man!
@@GoNorthJapan Be sure to see the Aoike pond! Though technically in Aomori Ken, it's right on the border. It's an 850 foot deep small pond with incredibly pure water. At one point the Chanel perfume company used its waters as a base because it's so pure. Shirakami are a special place my dude---quite magical.
You inspired me! I made Akita Komagatake part of my trip up to Tohoku last week. It really is a beautiful place with all the different peaks and the lovely alpine flowers! The only shame is I didn’t run into you while hiking :)

I wanted to climb Fuji-san 2020 after I visited Japan 2019 for the third time. Now with your videos I have to many mountains I want to hike. But I also want to go to Yamagata to the Yamabushi to get deeply involved with them. It just seems so natural to me what they do. Thanks for the video it make me smile.. Even I can't visit Japan right now.
Don't those Sasa grass shoots contain cyanide (taxiphyllin)?... I guess the bears can deal with it. Might even have a culturally transmitted strategy to neutralize it... Thanks Quinlan, it's 5-stars from me: jaw-dropping landscape with the last pockets of snow providing highlights, beautiful day (a smattering of clouds makes it perfect), absorbing info from a licensed mountain guide, the usual great camera+drone work (those drone shots)... And on top of all that a couple of botanical references for the plant nuts like moi (gorgeous Iwakagami), perfect, love this format. 🙏
This is such a beautiful place! As an artist, this would be the perfect place to go and paint. Perfect scenery! I wonder if art classes like that are offered in Japan? Where you go out in nature with your teacher and paint?
It looks like you can take a bus from Tazawako Station to Alpa Komakusa so this could be a great place to visit if you don't want to rent a car and have a JR pass.
These hikes are amazing but I mostly travel alone and I don't like going onto mountains alone. (Being from Austria i.e. easy access to the alps, I know how quickly things can and do go wrong. And adding bears, osuzumebachi and venomous snakes into the mix is quite scary. o.o) So, thanks for letting me experience the beauty through your videos.
Sure, I could go around Lake Tazawa a bit. It's a more standard tourist destination, but I should probably make a sort of rough guide to it since it's worth visiting!
@@GoNorthJapan I think your viewers would enjoy a trip round Tazawa, especially if you went by bicycle or moped in the late afternoon rather than the more standard daytime drive. The sunset from the lakeside was one of the highlights of my trip

I don't know the name of the volcano but somewhere in Northern Japan there is a volcano that last erupted around 1000 ad and the the lava that resulted from the eruption flow all the way to the Sea of Japan.
All the way to the sea of Japan? I'm not sure.. I wonder if Mt. Chokai has a lava flow going to the coast. I don't remember seeing it, but it's right on the cost so I wonder if that's it.
Yes! This hike was about a month back, but now they komakusa are in full bloom all over the place up here! I see them every time I hike Mt. Iwate recently!

I haven't seen classes out there, but I have seen individual artists out and painting in places like this, though not that exact spot.

Right now there are very few ticks. I've never gotten a tick on me up here in this region, whereas I've had tons of ticks back in Wisconsin...
