Enel was called god because that's what the skypians called their leader. Maybe it's that way for the sun god Nika too. Luffy is the leader who brings the fishmen to live under the sun; therefore sun god. We'll have too wait and see otherwise.

The way Kaido said Joy Boy in the Japanese version makes it more like "you couldn't be THE Joy Boy either", implying it's a role and not a reincarnation of a god or something. I definitely hope that's the case instead of Naruto But With Pirates

The biggest problem with Luffy becoming a god is that Vincent will have to stop believing in him.

Between all the things brought up in Wano, the Fishman Island prophecy, the Will of D., and the giant straw hat in the vault, it seems pretty clear that Oda's committed to some form of destiny as a function of the narrative (or at least a grand web of connection that influences Luffy's path).
But the cosmology of One Piece is... pretty lacking. Even things that've been around since the start like devil fruits are just sorta accepted without question. No explanation, it just is. So I'm not worried about high-minded concepts like fate or gods becoming a focal point of the narrative.
I don't think reincarnation is involved at all, the closest thing I see happening is inherited will. If Luffy were Joy Boy, he wouldn't literally be Joy Boy, but rather the embodiment of his ideals, a spiritual successor.

yeah its more shinto buddism than anything, like about reincarnation of spirits[god/kami] in people.
at least thats how i see it after reading/watching libaray of oharas theories and wasting over 14 years of my life reading it.

  • @comicallysansy

i doubt it'll happen, but I think if Oda does go the reincarnation route and makes Luffy into this destined god character, I'd be open to it depending on the execution. How interesting would it be if Luffy finds this out and goes into like a manic state because he realizes that his whole life was preordained and he had no freedom all along, or maybe he'll reject his fate and find a way to go against it. it'll probably end up being an inherited will plotline tho, and that's for the best.

It's obviously that God in One Piece is metaphorical and not literal. The Celestial Dragons are "Gods", Enel was a "God", even Ceasar Clown was seen as "merciful God" by the prisoners he "saved". It's clear that "Gods" in this series is entirely about perception. Is Luffy a God? No. Will he be seen as one? Absolutely.

That story about Nika reminded me of certain early chapter from Fire Punch(btw recommend this stuff) which leads me to believe it could be *based* on some real story.

  • @xvnation1585

Given that inherited will is such a big theme in the narrative, Oda would be the biggest hack in history if Luffy and his life were all predestined. I'm personally confident he won't do something that stupid, whereas Kishimoto was literally tard wrangled by his initial editor because he wanted to included anthropomorphic animals in early Naruto (exhibit A: Samurai 8).
Lastly, another dose of hopium, consider the theme behind Oden's tale and the story at large: perception. The people of Wano saw him as this savage delinquent who brought destruction behind his wake, when in reality he wasn't a bad guy at all. The world govt is generally seen as a symbol of the greater good, which won't last for long. Given this trend, people like Hyogoro are already looking up to Luffy as a deity figure, which 1. is not true, and 2. Luffy will reject this notion entirely.

I'm in the same camp of not liking Luffy being a literal reincarnation. But the Nika thing doesn't really bother me as much as the gum gum fruit being special. Until we know more i've always just considered Joyboy, Will of D, man who roger has been waiting for, Nika, Sun god all the same person/thing/origin. It only makes sense imo that over 800 years these stories change slightly with how divided the OP world is.

I think the vision of Luffy bringing down Fishman Island was that, he was going to challenge Big Mom, lose, and cause the island to be destroyed because Big Mom didn't get what she wanted out of it. Because, Luffy's main goal is to be the freest man of them all, extending that to the literal slaves and fishmen who have been put under such mistreatment. This being reflected thus far by him punching the literal symbol of enslavement and the world government (a Celestial Dragon) as well as having a blood transfusion with Jimbei, a sign of both family as well as curbing the strife between man and fishman.
Right now he's attempting to remove Kaido's position from Onigashima to allow Momonosuke to open Wano's boarders very reminisant of when Japan had theirs closed. I don't think Oda's as dumb as Naruto's author who had most of its story based off of a tale from Japan that was quite commonly known between a snake, a toad, and a nine-tailed fox. From what that interview said not long ago, we still got like 5 years so I am still invested in what he is going to do next.
I don't think it's going to be one of those, gods versus false-gods kind of story. Oda's careful and a little forgetful sometimes, I feel more like the story is about legacy and the legends that continue to inspire more. Willing to guess we'll learn about the Will of D after Wano if Kaido is defeated or subdued temporarily. That comment regarding your idea of him referring Yamato as the next Joyboy sounds way more in-line and interesting compared to the stupid trans-thing. Though if I'm honest that's just something people early on labeled when it is something commonly known with Tomboy characters in Manga/anime.
Perhaps the most comprehensive and interesting 11 minutes spent. Good theory and reasonable concern, hope this comment doesn't annoy you too much in its worthless length. Hope you're doing alright these days.

With Nika and "becoming Joy Boy" being introduced, I think Inherited Will could be an actual "thing". It's probably not Luffy himself who is born special, I personally believe. With the Gum fruit being made out to be important, I think the fruit is what set Luffy on the path to follow in Joy Boy's footsteps. In that case, the fruit could have been passed on from person to person (who ultimately failed to "become Joy Boy"). So in the end, is he a "chosen one"? No, he just got (un)lucky and was hungry one day. Alternatively, what I would find interesting is that EVERY fruit user is "marked" to be a canditate to "become Joy Boy" like you said. Maybe Blackbeard is aiming to "become Joy Boy". Luffy would ultimately win because he lives in the true spirit of freedom, the same Nika had. I dunno.
As for not knowing what's going on in Boruto, I can tell you. There are aliens that go around visiting planet to planet harvesting chakra and creating new vessels for their neverending spaceninja war.

The way Kaido said “You couldn’t be Joyboy either” felt like a title more than anything. There might have been multiple people that failed to be “The Joyboy”. I think Roger failed to be Joyboy and Luffy might become Joyboy, whatever that might be.

One of the biggest reasons I’d be against Luffy’s story being one of destiny and not free will is how much it would cheapen his dream. Dreams are probably the single biggest thematic element in the entire story and if Luffy’s dream was decided for him, you’re really just left with a completely uninspiring story.

Honestly tho, even if Luffy wasn’t born to be a god the fact that he has the D in his name already sets him up to have a destiny. Everyone with a D in their name inevitably has the same purpose of overthrowing the World Government but it is still cool how there is a freedom in what all of their reasons are. Like, Blackbeard is p much the main antagonist of the series imo and he has the same destiny as our protagonist but he would probably over through the World Government only to set up a WORSE ONE lmao.

I'm so far behind, I just passed the time skip and now Luffy's hiding the princess in a shark mouth. All Hail the Mumk.
EDIT: I would be disappointed if One Piece turned out to be about anything other than freedom/freewill. That's what One Piece is to me: freedom. I thought the reincarnation idea DID work in Naruto because that entire series made a big deal out of parallel generations (remember "The New Sannin" were each trained by one of the old Sannin) so it fit there.

My hope is that Joy Boy is a title and not a name (person who does x,y,z earns the title). I'm fine with a chosen one prophecy being involved if it doesn't come true (I.e. luffy is the chosen one and will do x! And then luffy proceeded to absolutely not do x rendering the rest of tge prophecy useless)

  • @karl_boss
    @karl_boss 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Joyboy/Nika could be the same guy, but over the centuries the stories and legends got muddled. Joyboy was simply a guy who tried to fight for freedom and ultimately failed (The broken promise on the FI Poneglyph).
It's not that Luffy would be the chosen one but is the one that happens to fill the role of freeing the people. Any one could've embodied Nika's ideals and legends, it just happens Luffy is doing do.
IF it does turn out to be true and Luffy is getting rail roaded into some destiny shit, we know he'd be like "Fuck that shit, I do what I want."
And if the worst case scenario happens, imma be sad I've followed this story for 18 years. Lul

To make a serious comment, I do think the "luffy looks like a Buddhist deity" is less literal than people took it. Zoro ALSO takes on the appearance of a Buddhist/hindu Deity with his Asura form (Asura are a lesser form of demigod who live at the bottom of the mountain that the gods live on.) I think itll be more thematic connections. Interestingly Enel's super Amaru form also looks like a Nio (the specific "Wisdom king" luffy looks like) while Prime age Hyogoro is designed more similar to THE Wisdom King Acala

Much like how the terms of Pirate & Marine, Justice & Evil are arbitrary and meaningless there is another pair of terms that Oda is saying is just as arbitrary. The titles of God & Devil. Ganfall was called God in Skypeia because he was the one in charge. But when Enel took charge he became God because he had more power. We see this come up later in Punk Hazard in how the centaurs see Caesar Clown as their God because they believe he saved them, while they view Vegepunk as the Devil because they believe he is to blame for the tragedy of Punk Hazard. Theres also the citizens of that country that was saved by the Germa. One of them was wondering if they had asked for the help of the Devil but then he ultimately decides it was "God" who saved them simply because he saved them. This is what Oda is trying to convey. That Gods & Devils are just labels we place on things that we think are good or bad. Like with Enel overwhelming power can also be seen as traits of a God. This is even seen when Issho levitates all the rubble in Dressrossa above the country and the people wonder if it is the act of a God.
Human beings will call anything with overwhelming power a God. So when Luffy tears down the world Government as the Pirate King who possesses unimaginable power it's not hard to see why he and the Strawhats will become seen as the New “Gods” of their world.
I think Luffy becoming seen as a "God" is important because it contrasts with how the Tenryuubito see themselves vs Luffy. The main difference that will be highlighted here is that the Tenryuubito are ordinary weak willed men who see themselves as Gods, while Luffy is an extraordinary man as close to Godhood as you can get yet he still sees himself as just a human. Similar to how he views Kaido and Big Mom as "Human" despite how powerful they are. The Tenryuubito are men who think themselves to be Gods whereas Luffy would be a God who thinks of himself as human. Much like how Superman despite all his power still views himself as ordinary Clark Kent from Kansas.
