I would say it all comes down to are you damaging or disrespecting your home gym? I don't know any gyms that flat out don't let students cross train when travelling, 99% actively encourage it. But imagine in a small town with only 3 gyms none are doing mega business and you cross train one Friday then on Saturday's class you tell evenyone at your home gym and say 'hey you guys should come along next Friday' I can see how that would damage your home gym and anger your professor. I still don't think that's a creonte just someone not thinking about their actions having a wider affect.
I cross train all the time now. I used to only go to my home gym but when I also started travelling for work I wanted to keep up the training. At first I got a little nervous because I thought I had to be loyal, but when I told them I had to travel for work, they were cool with it. I also learn a lot more details in a technique when I train with other coaches/professors. The problem is if I have to wear a Gi. It feels a little weird wearing another gym's logo. I also don't want to look like I'm dojo storming so I bought a generic one and use it when I train at other gyms. Some gyms require you only wear their Gis. Also gym etiquette varies. Some are more formal that others. I usually check to see if they have drop in fees, but most never post it online. Maybe because they want to sell the monthly membership? I usually send an email before visiting to ask permission. I've seen websites post that you have to ask before dropping in.
Any gym that doesn’t allow their team to cross train is only worried about the membership fees and not the members themselves. Loyalty comes from solid relationships, not legal contracts. My professor has always encouraged cross training and we welcome all practitioners to our open mats. Jiu Jitsu techniques aren’t secret anymore. Anyone can learn anything these days as long as they have a solid internet connection and the will to learn. Creontes are opportunists and have no loyalty.
I’m scared to ask my professors. They are all about loyalty. And even sort of shunned a member for supporting her friends at competition from another school (she didn’t stay to watch the students from our school) I love the school and professors. I want to go to an open mat at a different school. But if I do I will be keeping it a secret. lol.
Killer content brother subbed🤙

This is prob one of the best explanations I’ve heard! It’s all about the context…
Thanks for the insightful comment 🤙🏻

Thanks for the comment! Totally agree, I’ve heard it said that people follow the coach, not the gym…

This is really sad. Seems like your leadership is insecure and unhealthy.
Oof, yeah this is unfortunate 😬 I have friends from other gyms who I support at competitions all the time.
