*Fun fact:* The “dead zone” in the stage is wherever the camera is, not just the top and bottom of the stage. This is because Sonic doesn’t move through the stages, more so the stage moves around Sonic.

That's not exactly the case, since sonic can still go off the screen without dying. The "insta death" trigger is actually tied the current bottom level boundary (especially if you're playing Sonic 1) or the level target boundary. The bottom level boundary dynamically changes as you progress through the levels and when the bottom level boundary changes, it usually does so smoothly instead of snapping to the new boundary. Which is why you sometimes get moments where you can die by going to fast and out running the camera. Also as a correction, both sonic and camera do actually move through the level on an X and Y axis that starts at 0 in very top left of the levels. The level boundaries are basically what determines the maximum and minimum X and Y positions for both Sonic and the camera. The bottom level boundary\max Y position also determines where the death boundary is actually positioned. I know this because I actually made rom hacks before, so I know of the most of the inner works of the games. Anyway... in the video it's self, it looks like sonic just simply clipped through lava's weak single block collision and straight into the death boundary. Either because he was falling too fast or the spawning of the badnik pushed him through the collision.
Sonic doesn't have terminal velocity in the genesis games, so he just keeps accelerating as he falls. Clipping through the floor (or lava in this case) is quite easy xD
Maybe he fell so fast that he phased thru collision at the wrong time. Kind of like Doom, where collision is checked every 10th of a second or so, and collision can be ignored especially when projectiles go too fast.
Trust me ive had crazy things like this happen to me more than once. I've managed to skip the oil Ocean zone boss fight a couple of times because the game thinks you broke open the capsule even though it is off screen.😅😅
What happened on here was? Super Sonic went *too fast that it's camera couldn't pan fast enough to keep up with him* & as a result he fell into a dead zone spot, lost all his rings & *died on the spot* for it upon reaching it.
Maybe the stage was too slow to keep up with super sonic and the enemy smush him be ose the camera wasn't showing the enemy and super sonic somehow got on the bottom of the enemy and got smush

@@Joshwoakesin short, most of the geometry ouside of the screen doesnt load causing sonic to noclip or in some cases, gets stuck in walls
