    Short answer: No. Unless you are signed into the service and actively running the application your files are not syncing. If for instance you do not have OneDrive enabled to autorun at startup or have closed the OneDrive app, you have to manually open the application for it to begin syncing. Your files can only sync when there is active communication. Disconnecting your system from the network will keep the files from syncing.

    Good video advise, Leo. It made think deeper on this important subject, thanks!

    People it's time to have your own backup system (NAS) that you backup to your own server. I don't trust anyone with my information that is classified as My Eyes Only.

      Well, if your NAS is set up to automatically sync your files, the NAS version of those files is also affected by any ransom virus you may happen to get. If, however, your NAS backup is done manually or on a schedule that doesn't coincide with the attack, you can recover your files from the NAS.

    Can Google Docs get encrypted by ransomware or other malware? Off hand I think no, because the docs live only in the cloud, and only short-cuts go on the PC.... but if you use google file stream (so drive is mapped?) ??? Also wondering if any practical way back up google docs in their native format?

      If your files get encrypted on your PC and automatically synced, then your online files are encrypted too. You’d need the online service to save previous versions (including deleted files) to protect against that.

      @@notreallyme425 Specifically I'm referring to the online Google Docs, like Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Drawings, etc., that can only be edited in a web browser or Android App. (Not typical PC file types like word, excel, PDF, etc). Whether you choose the mirroring option, or the file stream option, in both cases what goes on your PC is only a link to the Google Document in Google's cloud. Because of this, it seams to me like Google Docs should be immune to malware on the PC, as the malware would presumably have to open the google doc in a web browser in order to edit it? But with the drive mapped, and especially if using the file stream option... ??? Is it a practical possibility somehow???

      I am referring to the google format files specifically, like Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Drawings, etc. These files are in Google's Cloud Drive only. (Not typically PC format files like Excel, Word, PDF, etc). When using Google Drive App to sync to PC what goes on the PC is simply links to those Google Docs. Google Docs can only be edited via a web browser or android app. So... it would seam the Google Docs might be immune to malware on the PC, but.... If using the Google Drive App, especially with the File Stream option.... How possible or likely would it be ???

    How much does 1TB storage cost on dropbox over a year? Or two? I have a couple of external drives and alternate them between backups for files. If one got accidentally corrupted I have the other one, minus the most recent changes. Those drives last for years on one-off purchase. The same woth MS office. Never paid a penny for their 365 version. But I am not a business, to charge customers for my backup expenses.

    .......... Streaming, or Mirroring? Just for file storage and file back-up?

    • @jsgglr
      @jsgglr 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Mirroring. With mirroring you have copy of files in cloud, and on your PC. Streaming does not copy the files to your PC.

      Me neither.
      I'll defy anyone to get on my phone or computer and find anything worth bothering about.
      Unless of course my netflix/prime and TH-cam history suddenly become invaluable.
