- When we think of Guatemala, we think of Latinos.
But black Guatemalans? What?
The Garifuna people are of African descent, who had come on the shoes of Guatemala in 1802 from Honduras. They were originally brought over from Africa hundreds of years ago to the Caribbean islands as slaves. But they had chosen Livingston, Guatemala, as their land when they left Honduras. This detail shows my meeting with a local, who I had just met on my walk around Livingston, who gave me a brief historical encounter of the Garifuna people as well as a tour of the local neighborhoods

Yes, that is Guatemala!!!
What you see is what it is…!! We Guatemalans love it…!! We simple love Guatemala..!! Foreigners have mixed views about Guatemala…! But, they are here only once, and then are history…!!!
Me encantan las negritas son lindas
I'm no expert, (although I do have Garifuna family in Livingston) but his history of how the Garifuna reached La Buga didn't sound like what I learned. The language has Arawak as well as French, Spanish and German influences. That aside, you have found one of the very best places in Central America. 17:17 the main spiritual ceremonies they have in these temples is called a Dugu and is something that can go on for days at a time
Wish I could attend a Dugu, that would be such a cool experience!
Greetings from West New York, it's very interesting the story of the garifunas, the vedio is very interesting and Guatemala is a small with diferent languages and diverse cultures
La cultura Garifuna es muy bonita ojala los jovenes Garifunas no se olviden de sus origenes, su cultura y su lengua.
Awesome
And we’ll done!
One correction: in our Garifuna language, “Buyei” does not mean ghost. It is the title of the person who oversees and leads the ceremonies in the temple (Temple: Dabuyaba in the Garifuna language)
He/she is the mediator between us and our ancestors and can communicate directly with them through their spirit helpers.
Again, thank you for the video. Nicely done!
This is great, I wish the community local and abroad could help rebuild those important centers of their culture. Guatemala has too many hidden treasures to learn in a few visits but i learned a lot in this video, thanks ! 🙏 🇬🇹

Great doc! Do you have a website or IG?
Hi Paul do you think you can visit a Creole neighborhood in guatemala. I think they live in a town called morales. They are different from the garifunas
Hi, I think unfortunately there’s few Creole families yet in Morales. Maybe less than 10. Some Creole descendants from the Jamaicans that were brought to the banana Farms in Morales, now live in Puerto Barrios, some Last Names are: Brown, Griffiths, Dockery, Rushford, Ellington, Ellis, Smith, Gentle, Menzie. But this is a very very small minority, (creole) although being from creole origins, none of them speak english nowadays but Spanish,. However, I met an old man in Puerto Barrios, his last name was Rushford, creole descendant, he would still speak English (and Spanish) since his parents would still speak it at home, he probably was born around the 1950’’s, so just to have an idea of the timing where these Creole people would still speak their language but living in Izabal already made them learn Spanish. The majority of african-guatemalans are Garifuna.
Interesante video , yo e escuchado de los Garífunas pero no se nada de su cultura .
