    This is solid gold!! Thank you for sharing your story and your thoughts on this. It is so true... you are magical no matter who you are, what you look like, what kind of tail you have, how skilled you are at tricks, how big your following is, etc. I'll admit... I feel like an imposter sometimes because my breath hold is shorter than that of most other mermaids... but then a random kiddo comes by and freaks out because there is a fish-person on the beach and they cannot believe their eyes- that always helps me remember why I do this in the first place. They could care less about my insecurities.

    You put this together so beautifully. I've always loved mermaids but haven't swum (in any form) since I left my childhood swim team. Twelve years, a ton of parental abuse and a C-PTSD diagnosis later, I've found myself on the outer spectators' ring of the mermaiding community. So many beautiful women (most of whom are a lot skinnier than me) in these equally beautiful tails... Honestly I'd love to take up mermaiding, even if it's only a personal hobby, but something's just holding me back. Maybe it's my body-image issues, maybe some repressed memory regarding my abusive mother... I don't know what it is or if it's something I can overcome, but watching this makes me feel a little better about myself. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us. 🧜‍♀

      Sorry for the late reply, I've been taking a step back from my youtube this last year. Thank you for sharing your story. We're completely welcome in the community even if it's as a mermaid with no tail! It's all about the mermaid magic you carry with you.

    I loved the honesty in your video. I started mermaiding at 33yrs. When I was younger I looked like your traditional mermaid. Now I am 42 and don't have the same body I did back then. I have to remind myself constantly to just love myself as I am. It is nice to know that I am not alone in the struggle. It is uplifting to hear your story.

    This is definitely something I needed to hear and I agree 100% with what you have to say. I’m a new mermaid in the community and there is the feeling that I’m not really a mermaid because i don’t have a tail and I don’t fit the normal “LOOK” of the other perfect looking mer’s. But it’s all about your experience, does it make you feel good? Does it bring a little magic and beauty to the world that is in desperate need of that magic and beauty? My sister and I started a Mer page where we lived knowing full well that we were new and we didn’t have tails or mono fins at the time of starting the page, but we say that there was a need for the page and we filled that need. We have to have the courage to do something to help other people come together, no matter who they are. That’s what’s important. So thank you Minnow for speaking out about all the hard things some people have a hard time bring up and talking about, myself included, because it needs to be said and we have to be loving of ourselves. I hope to have to the courage one day to share my story like you did, to inspire someone else to love themselves and what they do that brings them joy and peace.

    I miss seeing you at the pod swims! I think I got to see your first swim in the magnificent green beastie!
    Thank you for sharing your experience with us - and never give up mermaiding for yourself. I recently brought out my first finfun from back in 2018, jammed my Luna monofin into it and... just floated around on a floatie in a lake. No camera. No gopro. Not much actual swimming. Just... being a fish for a bit. It was nice, in the age of Covid, to just go to as beach and have things be normal for a bit.
    Also, I think more mers need to take the Spongebob approach: if nautical nonsense is something you wish, then GET ON THE DECK AND FLOP LIKE A FISH!!! Life can't all be serious!

    Thank you so much for this video, i know im a year behind but i wanted to comment by saying this video uplifted my spirits. I nearly gave up on mermaiding just recently in my life, because of a medical condition that doesnt allow me to swim, until its fixed. Im working on that atm, have a plan because im tired of being a fish stranded on land. And you made me cry when you said that you dont need a tail to be a mermaid. I realized ive been a mermaid from the start, mermaid or not. Im working on getting myself stronger on land in the meantime, so when im ready to finally transform no matter how old i am or what i feel or look like, i’ll have the tail of my dreams. Thank you so so so much for this, felt like a miracle 💕💕

    I'm so sorry you've had all these struggles. I think it's hard for women in general to find clothing sized properly in stores to fit different body types. Not to mention tails that could be considered "speciality garments" and promises made by companies to rectify sizing issues that aren't fulfilled properly. I fall into the "petite curvy" category, but I'm also athletic due to dance/gymnastics etc. AND I have very wide hips and a narrow waist. So sizing becomes a nightmare🙈 I've wanted a finfolk fabric tail for aaages but I'm way too scared to be disappointed 🙄
    Ps: my pants never fit me 😂🤣

    • @mermaidminnow
      @mermaidminnow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally get what you are saying! The good news though is that there are costume seamstresses that I've found who are more than willing to help tailor mermaid tails to fit better. It's just a bummer that we have to pay extra for tails like that. Courtney Mermaid is a tailmaker that does make tails custom to measurements though which is awesome!

On leggings I can get hemmed but doubt possible on a tail .. but still. Lol,U guess I should have chosen a monofin that more tail skins would matc😅h.but,,...

    I absolutely loved this video! My sister and I just joined the Mermaid community yesterday and I have my first mermaid tail coming in the mail soon and I'm so psyched!! A lot of our friends think we are weird and think we are "immature" for being mermaids and its really hard to hear that from friends...and even our parents. But I truly do believe that they will see one day that this is was makes us happy, and what we love to do! My sister and I have 2 friends who also love mermaids and they r looking to get their first tails and I am going to hear them on every step of the way! Be who you are. Its gonna be hard, every road has its bumps, but do what makes U happy! It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, they don't know how happy I am when swimming, or when looking at the beautiful tails many skilled people make. Be You!

    I’m in the average range of sizes but my FinFolk tail never fit me right. I sized myself as well as I could but the fabric has NO give, NO stretch, at all. My calves and ankles are pretty big. My thighs are too, but I have really thick, muscular calves, and the FinFolk tail fit my thighs, but it was too small on my butt, and wayyyy too small on my calves. I hated it. The mermaid seamstress says the new fabric is awesome, stretchy, and comfy. I’m happy they decided to change it. I’ve felt the same, even though I’m an average size. I still felt too big when I got a tail that should’ve fit me, but it was almost painful to get on. I love this video

    • @mermaidminnow
      @mermaidminnow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As someone who has massive calves too I totally get what you are saying. It’s so frustrating when brands limit their sizes like they did. Although I haven’t seen the new fabric tails up close I have heard that they are so much better than before too. So good on them for taking the critiques they got to heart and making more size inclusive tails!

    Minnow, thank you for being so honest! I fell into a similar tail trap... I ordered a fin fun.. the least expensive one ( incase I didn't like it...) then days later decided I should have gotten the one I really wanted, so I ordered that with more stuff, THEN saw tails with fins and thought I need fins to fit in, so I ordered ANOTHER set of tails and stuff from FINFUN... yes... now 6 fin funs in a WEEK and 2 of their monofins... I ended up making fins for one of the tails .. and I think it came out beautifully... BUT..
    That little voice in my head said, even a fancy finfin merma isn't really a mermaid.... so I found the original images I fell in love with a few years ago and figured out who made me "dream tail".... it was FINFOLK, so I then posted looking for it in online groups and found one to buy.... lol wish I had seen your video about getting scammed BEFORE I BOUGHT IT... all I can say is all least she sent the tail..... ugh...... so now I have 7 tails... and 4 monofins... ( don't ask... theres a Linden on its way and ANOTHER Finfolk dream tail coming...)
    But anyways... though all this craziness, I was feeling further and further removed.. until I started watching your videos... I feel a happiness and a sense of peace and belonging just watching you! I hope one day our pods cross and we get to meet! Thanks for being you darlin!!!

    Bleh, mood with the finfolk tail. Except my issue wasn't so much my width as it was my length, they're gorgeous but my glaucous atlanticus tail is way too short on me and there's nothing I can to to extend it enough :"").
    On another note I know way too much about elitism in this community, when I first entered when I was 14 I was harrassed and bullied so much in the community by much older mers. I had almost left the community because if that but I didn't fully. I just didn't interact on FB anymore since they're toxic. I am now 21 and still love doing this

    • @mermaidminnow
      @mermaidminnow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hopefully that's one of the things finfolk changes with their new release. They have been saying they've taken a lot of criticism about their old tails to heart.
      Oh my gosh, I am sorry that happened to you. That's just not ok for anyone in any community to do. I'm glad to hear you're still mermaiding and loving it. I do feel like since the community has grown, there has been a lot more acceptance for more mers, but it definitely is still there. :(

    Also I wanted to say that this video is really important for new merfolk because it’s sometimes hard to hear from all of this negativity. Sometimes I can’t even imagine that this kind of judgements exist in the community as I’ve always been into welcoming pods so it’s good to point it out. I’m also tired of earring that finfun tails are for beginners: I tried my first one after years of using other ‘great’ brands and I fell in love with it! I would say being a mermaid comes from within and being able to feel it whether you’re in a silicone or a fabric tail.
