Using an Electrical Diode on a 12v System

  • In this video I'm going to talk about how to use an electrical diode on a 12 volt system to prevent electricty from flowing back through your system and reverse powering accessories.
    I had this problem with my four way flashers. When I turned them on, they worked, but when I turned on either of my blinkers, all four lights also flashed! I added 2 electrical diodes to the directional wires and that stopped the power from cross feeding when it went through the flasher relay.
    This will hopefully help you understand how to solve this problem if you have it on a 12 volt system!
    This is an obscure video, but it was a problem I was having, so I hope it helps you!

    this is not an informational of the applications of diode use in a 12v system this is just what you found to fix your willys jeep using filament style bulbs. theres not even mention to the orientaition of the diode or the wiring application that you actually used, you shared a vauge theory or a solution to your specific problem and labeled it as a informational on using diodes in 12v systems. Lame.

      As then I can ask 2 people the question I have 👍
      Ok I have a question if I put a diodes on a 12v car socket on the positive cable in that order, I’d like the power to be directed
      Wold it stop the charge when the engine starts from the alternator travelling up to the 12v socket
      If so what diode would I need to stop the 14.4 v from traveling up to the 12v
      The 12v socket is not been fitted yet, as I need to find a solution to stop the alternator from coming back up to the socket as I need the socket to be one way power only the
      Pls help
      Me get my head around this 😮

    If you have say a 10 amp draw on a circuit and you put 2 6amp rated diodes in parallel in same orientation, will that work splitting the current between the two or will it just blow them both up??

      That sounds suspect to me, I wouldn't do it unless you had no other option.

    Dude..I just ran all my lights on a single circuit...and then needed to install flashers..But THEN!! i thought that all the lights would flash since there was nothing stopping the back feed into the other lights..THEN i thought of a diode and viola!!! your vid popped up...lol...Saves me a ton of unnecessary work!!

    Very helpful information. Your car needs a new directional switch. If you ever take those apart, you'll see what I mean so you could fix it with a new switch and no diod to if you wanted to.

    Can you clarify that the problem occurs when either left or right indicator turned on. The video made it sound like only turning left was a problem

    Hey. After watching your video I bought a pair of painless diodes. How fid you tell what direction they worked in?

      Power up one side and check if the other end has power it's actually very simple
      The power will travel only to one direction

      Just look for the Grey line on it. Normally the side the line is on is the output direction which also blocks current

    I have a trailer that I installed led lights on the back for when we are at events. The trailer has it's own battery that the lights are hooked up to with a switch, so it's self contained. I want to also use those lights for reverse when I put truck in reverse. I know I can use reverse wire and a diode but don't understand how to wire it up. Can you help me please?

      After the switch to turn on the all the rear LED lights I would run the reverse hot wire with a diode. You already have reverse lights that work, right? If you run it this way when you run the LEDs it won’t turn on the other reverse lights you may have. The diode is run in-line with the reverse lights.

      @@TireKickers-RossCameron I'm going to name wires colors just for reference.... From the aux light on trailer I have a blue power wire from light running to switch inside trailer that runs to a battery inside trailer. ( trailer battery and lights are self sufficient/ not connected to truck at all) So if I add a yellow wire from truck/trailer reverse wire to light power wire were yellow and blue wire connect together with aux light then I would put the diode in yellow wire? Thanks for your help, sorry if I'm confusing.

      Do you have dedicated reverse lights on the trailer? Or are you wanting them to light up the same lights you have the aux switch for? The only reason to use a diode is that if you don't, you'll have lights turning on even when your switch isn't on. I had this issue with light and right blinkers both running off the same flash ballast.

      @@TireKickers-RossCameron No dedicated reverse lights, these are just led lights I installed on back of trailer. They are already wired to a switch and battery inside trailer. I just want them to also work when I put truck in reverse so I'm not getting out and turning them on then getting out to turn them off. I run a nonprofit equine assisted therapy program so this trailer goes to schools and hospitals. On the outside we have 8 strobe lights, two 36 in light bars, two led back lights and a door light. The inside has five 12in light bars, a Maxx Air fan and a solar trickle charger on top of trailer. This trailer has more lights than a Christmas tree lol. The diode I have looks like a small fuse. I saw a guy do it on TH-cam but he didn't really explain how to wire it up. I sent messages but no reply. So I know it will work this way but like I said I'm not sure how it's wired.....I'm guessing I can go from reverse wire of 7 way plug, put diode there and run wire straight to lights. ?????

      Probably in line to the switched power and another larger one from the battery power to the relay

    This doesn't help... I haven't seen many diodes lower than 20v if any... N many are rated in 5w or less... Plus there are rectifier, schottky, zener etc types...
    It looks like schottky or rectifier might work.. But if you don't get enough voltage the drop will essentially block both sides...
    Many overpriced "painless" diodes are just cheap $1 diodes with shrink tubing and connectors on the end lol. Trailer diodes are the same, just with a heats ink n 3 terminals
