    They forgot to mention that when you do the battery swap you can request a different battery capacity. If you have the biggest battery and only need a standard range battery they will swap in the smaller unit for the lower price that comes with it. Conversely, if the standard battery meets 90% of your requirements but you would like more range on a particular occasion they will swap in the larger battery and you can have the smaller battery swapped back in when you are done with your long hikes.

      Never going to happen. The most important reason why people who have driven a German car for a while will go German the second time as well is the driving experience. Everything from handling through the interior, and to noise reduction. This is an art that comes from 50 years of experience - trial and error - and nothing you can learn overnight. Tesla is 50 years behind. China is 50 years behind. America in general is 30 years behind. Japan is 20 years behind. With EV people will be sensitive to noise more than ever. This factor alone will ensure German domination in the EV market. Germans were also very thoughtful when they decided to wait for a battery revolution to be in view before they chose which way to go. This is certainly not Lithium-ion. When it comes to Neo I struggle with myself to decide what is uglier, inside or outside. The Chinese have no sense of beauty even when they steal from the west.

    As a Chinese who likes German car brands, I have bought Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche Panamera in the past ten years. This year, I intend to book Chinese EV LI L9. For gasoline cars, I will still choose German cars. But for new energy EV, I will only choose China's domestic energy vehicles. The new energy vehicles of Chinese brands, regardless of their appearance and interior decoration, are far superior to those of traditional German automakers and Tesla. There is no need to spend money on EV produced by these old-school brands.

    Battery swap is a great idea and could revolutionise the ev industry. Manufacturers will sign up and standardise their battery formats so that many models use the same pack. Musk has too much invested in the supercharger network to consider the option viable but there is another benefit: when battery packs begin to show signs of degradation they can be serviced with faulty cells and/or electronics being replaced and simply put back into service without any inconvenience or downtime for drivers.

    Great video, well done Fifth Gear.
    The swapping looks really cool, but I'm not convinced - who owns the battery? If it's getting swapped all the time, the only way to make that work is to lease an energy service and not own the battery in your car. It also requires more battery packs than there are cars, you need lots of expensive swap stations, each holding several dozen batteries in order to meet all day swapping demand, those stations and the extra packs mean huge capital investment, where that same investment would add 20 fast chargers, which would have more overall throughput. What happens when they run out of charged packs - is it fast charging all those packs? You also have to limit the form factor of all cars around a single pack size, and so on.
    15 minutes while you take a break, grab a coffee and catch up on emails is not an issue - this seems like a solved problem with 350kW chargers.

    • @trevorberridge6079
      @trevorberridge6079 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The stations all have a variety of batteries on standby and they immediately begin recharging the battery they take in ready for a future customer. Your in-car app will tell you which batteries are available at which swapping stations and you have to pre-book the swap. There's no first come first serve scramble where you hope they have a battery available. And it does not exclude you from charging by other methods if you prefer. It's not compulsory and not everyone will be doing it on every occasion. Also as I've stated in another comment, they have different battery pack capacities that you can swap as required. But, don't forget, this is a service for NIO only. No-one could provide this as standard for every EV as they are all different. Other manufacturers will have to decide if they also want to return to battery swapping. Yes, I said RETURN. Battery swapping was working very well over 100 years ago before someone found oil in Texas and decided electric vehicles had to go. The New York taxi fleet was run with battery swap vehicles until about 1908. The idea was well tested and now the technology is far more advanced. And by the way, there's very few cars that currently charge at 350kw and they aren't in the lower price bracket. You must realise that not all EVs are the same. Different prices, different battery capacities and structures, different charging standards. There's no one rule for all of them any more than there was with ICE vehicles.

    • @brushlessmotoring
      @brushlessmotoring 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@trevorberridge6079 good response - thank you.
      Do you think that the promise of battery swapping will delay potential EV buyers from switching away from fossil fuels? That’s my main concern, it felt more tomorrows world than todays reality - and so many people look for reasons not to take the plunge - I have the same concerns about solid state stories that are decades away from being in actual volume scale products you can buy now.
      The booking system does take care of the uncertainty, but does that fit with the variable timing of a multi swap road trip? 15 mins stop is typical of 250kW Teslas, you are correct that 350kW is less common at the moment, but by the time these swap stations are common it will be standard, albeit only on more expensive cars, like the NIO.
      Cool historical context for battery swapping too - didn’t know that.

      @@brushlessmotoring battery swapping won’t happen - they can’t even fulfil car orders without a 12 month waiting list, let alone extra batteries required for swapping…
      And then there’s the cost of battery swapping stations, compared to a simple charger, the cost is enormous…. 10 car swapping stations vs 10 chargers?? So it’s too expensive then there’ll only be 1 swap station - with a 1 hour queue of cars waiting to swap battery out?? Just put more chargers in instead - much cheaper to have cars capable of faster charging… 300 mile drive for a 20 min stop is no problem…

    Yes, it was a great advantage with an electric car in Norway. But now the "smart" politicians have realized that now is the time for electric car owners to pay. We still have some benefits, but they are getting smaller and smaller. So I am reasonably sure that Norway as an electric car country will soon change. Like much else, we will end up far behind others. The only reason we Norwegians buy / bought was the benefits. Now they should be gradually removed and then it stops.

    • @burgienl
      @burgienl ปีที่แล้ว

      The same thing happened in The Netherlands. There were so much benefits that electric cars got too popular too fast. That cost the government a lot of money so a number of those benefits are disappearing. With high gas prices driving electric still made sense. But now that all energy prices have gone up, it's less interesting to swap your ICE for an EV. The only advantage Norway has is that it can produce it's electricity with hydro and thus control it's own prices better. So ideologically driving electric is still a good option. The Netherlands can't produce it's electricity that way so it's still needs fossil fuels, and so EVs make less sense. The only upside is that it's a small country with a mild climate, meaning that EVs perform better here.

    • @bjrnarestlen1234
      @bjrnarestlen1234 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was always the plan. No politician in Norway have ever said that the pro EL incentives would last for ever, only in order to promote building up of infrastructure, and to give car manufacturers an interesting market and an incentive to develop EL-cars/models, so the EL-cars can "fight" on "equal terms" with fossil cars. Now, most of the infrastructure is in place, and now it's up to us Norwegians having to choose EL cars for nature's sake, not only for the incentives.

    Whilst the battery swap seems like a good idea, I think it is a knee jerk reaction to people that have issues with charging. I'm not averse to the idea, as I don't want to be the same as that idiot 10 years ago that said EV's will be no good, but thoughts are:
    - The physical battery must be the same mounting on every car.
    - You will need additional batteries in stock to make a changeover
    - The cost of the stations is considerably higher than a charging station due to the high degree of automation.
    - Most people charge at home if they have off street parking.
    I would prefer to see:
    - Faster charging rates with smaller batteries so we can buy more fit for purpose cars. My Renault Zoe can do 250 miles (on a particular wednesday at a precise longitude and lattitude) but I would sacrifice 100 miles for better thermal management and charging at a rate like an Ioniq 5! That would mean a lighter more fun car with more room.
    - The government to convince corporations and landlords to follow the same ideas as companies like sainsburies and invest in rooftop solar. At the same time to setup a electricity to tennent scheme so that employees can charge at work a lot more easily and of local renewable.
    - More duplications of chargers on major highways. I'm so sick of turning up at an A road charger and finding that it is out of commission. They should try to be in multiples even if the energy supply is not high enough, make it so 2 can share like Tesla do! How many times have I phone BP to get a charger reset!

    Battery swap is basically dead, not the future. It is $600,000 for the structure, not including the land needed. Most EV owners, recharge at home. The cost and resources needed to manage an EV battery swap network is very high. We already have issues just getting enough batteries for vehicles being made. Battery tech is getting to the point that range makes needing to recharge beyond the home is rarely needed. Imagine if a five EVs show up for a battery swap or a five charging station site. The five for battery swap will cue up and the one who gets in first is fine, but if your are third or worse, you will take longer to get the battery swap than to put in 150 miles range to get you back on the road via charging station. It is much cheaper and easier to place charging stations and no worries about battery stock running out. Hearing 5th Gear hosts say battery swap is the future just made them sound clueless.

      As a Chinese, I used to have similar opinion on the battery issue. But since now I'm a ES6 owner in China, we do have the choice to rent the battery or purchase the battery. Even you choose to rent the battery, you still can recharge at home. The Generation 2.0 Battery swap station has 13 batteries, if you are the 14th user, you will make an appointment on the app, and the station will charge the first "trade in" battery and you will be swap to this one. It is quite useful for a long-distance trip, like if you drive from London to Edinburgh, and especially in big countries or like the mainland of European. I have experienced for over half year, I haven't gotten in the issue by like waiting for a over 20 mins queue, I can't tell it would be the future. But currently, Nio has sold over 200,000 in the Chinese market, and over 800 battery swap stations in China, this solution makes EV quite like a "normal" car for me.

    The problem with controlling everything through electronics and screens is that mechanical cars get old at one pace but tech gets old much quicker. It's still viable to run a 40 year old fossil but try using a 40 year old computer to surf the internet and post here.
    And ironically all these motors to adjust steering wheels and seats, open and close doors and tailgates, present hidden handles, etc. add more weight and complication to a car. I'd much rather have keep fit windows, levers for adjusting the steering wheel and seat position and a handle to pull the tailgate closed than a load of heavy and environmentally unfriendly electronics and motors to do the job instead.

    Should've gone to the wireless road-integrated parking spots downtown, capable of delivering 50kW charging speeds, wirelessly.
    That, to me, looks like the future. Imagine implementing wireless chargers on the highways and actually not spending any fuel while going at speed and getting to your destination with a full battery.. Imagine just parking your car at the supermarket and coming back to a charged battery. The fuelling should be seamless and in the future there shouldn't really be any fuel-stations anymore.

      Haven't watched the whole video yet but the weather looks temperate for their visit. Try a roadtrip in an EV when it's below zero. Range decreases and charge times increase. I still like newer PHEVs because they now have enough range for local driving in full electric, while having the range and quick gas refill for road trips no matter the conditions. They are cheaper for the size of vehicle you get as well. Eliminates 80% of gas usage through the year but ICE is still there as a fall back for the worst conditions.
      I could see urban European dwellers being fine with small EVs though. But a newer PHEV could cover those urban distances in electric mode as well now.

    2. Good EV battery systems, ie long range all weather and long lasting and safe, require *liquid* thermal management systems. Those don’t quick disconnect and securely reconnect w a few threaded pistons. Neither do the electrical connections reliably for that matter when the undercarriage is dirty.
