That's a cool hack. Do you have to lubricate the mold like a stone mold after this hack? Or can you just shoot the bait without lube like it was just a regular aluminum mold. Just wondering if the plastisol sticks to the engine enamel.
You can just shoot like normal. But I have to be honest. I don't do this anymore. I've actually have had better luck with the "matte' finish baits than the shiny baits. I prefer the matte finish on all my baits now. To me it looks more realistic 🤷🏽♂️. Especially for the craw type baits
Is there any alternatives for a hand pour silicone mold, cause mine come out dull… I’m wondering is there’s something other than dipping my baits in clear/putting heat on them?. like any oils to rub idk
Late to the party....I haven't done this yet, but will be trying it on the Do-It Slick Shiner mold. Or at least on a couple of the 9 cavities. I know some fish may prefer the rough texture...but dayumm...I mixed eight bucks worth of glitter and mica in the plastic, and am working to make the baits as translucent as possible so the flash is visible. A rough surface kinda hides some of the pretty.
4 decade professional tournament angler Randy Blaukat goes to great length to rough up his soft plastic baits with his fingers to eliminate the shiny reflective sides. I agree and believe that the baits industry understands that shiny baits catches fisherfolk. "Oooh that's pretty!" But I can understand that anglers want their DIY baits to look like the ones they buy. And I noticed the bait you chose to demonstrate with does not have a lot of detail. Have you ever tried this on a ribbed (Kietech style) swimbait mold? I suspect that the thin spaces between the ribs might fill in because of the coating and lose their detail. Of course, not being a sand cast aluminum mold user, I seriously doubt they make a thin and deep ribbed swimbait mold. Anyone know?
Totally agree. This is the only one I did. I actually like the "matte" finish of the ES essential molds. Especially the craw molds. To me it looks more realistic that shiny craws 🤷🏽♂️. Your are absolutely correct when you said the shiny baits sell more fisherman than fish hahahhahaha.
+Fishingisgood Use thin coats. There is detail in the eye on the swimbait and it still came out. I might try buffing the next essentials mold i get !!!
will that work with the mold for the Gary yamamoto worms and still show all the rings and little ribs on the worms or will the paint fill up the mold to much preventing them from showing up
I saw another guy did this...and he let the paint cure with the mold facing downward, to keep the paint from pooling and filling in the details on a senko style stickbait.
you only need to do this to the Do-It Essential series molds. These are the only molds that make the bait come out with a matte finish. They use sand cast aluminum rather than machined aluminum on the essential series molds. Some people care about them and some people couldn't care less. I only have done this to 2 molds and it was about a year ago and I haven't done another coat yet. its been holding up great.
+MasterCraft Fishing Yeah i was thinking about trying the same thing if i get another one of those types of molds and see how easy it was and how it came out...
The caney creek croaker is an awesome, single cavity mold. You can hand pour the belly, leave the pour in the mold, close it up and inject it for a laminate effect. You can use a dual injector too. The bait itself is the best frog bait I've used from Do-it molds. Don't forget to add eyes to the bait.
How long does spray last until you gotta spray again? Like 100 times , 1000 times ? Is it worth the trouble I guess is what I'm trying to find out. Great video & appreciate any feedback.
I seen a lot of videos an the ones don't wax there lead molds the baits looks really bad I wanted to try my lead molds since I seen this work for the plastic
I just did my swimbait like this about to see if its clearer after doing this i know whats happening is the sand in the mold make little wholes which make them not clear a cnc mold very smooth why the baits more clear cause of light reflections
Chris Mitchell it actually is still holding up. I've prob made 100 swimbaits. There is a spot by the sprue that the paint chipped off but not where the bait is. The better you prep and clean the better the paint will stick !!!!!!
Could just clean out vent lines after and get same result?? Scratching vent lines after seems easier than xzcto knife outline. But it may be faster the other way. Havent tried either. To be fair
yea I stopped doing it because I didn't get that reflection but this is it I bought a couple old school molds from a flea market 6 for 5 bucks I'm subscribing bruh!

That was cool. I want to start making my own weights and plastics. You have a nice set up there in that room. Is that a shed? Can it be done indoors or is that stuff toxic. I have a big computer room that I want to do it in. Anyway, great editing as always and good content.
+Sin City Outdoors Definitely not something you want to do inside your home unless you have some serious ventilation like a range hood to catch all the fumes.
Frederico Ramos you don’t even need to spray wd40 all you need is a heat gun after you pull the baits out wave the heat gun over them it’ll make em shine

I've heard you can use worm oil...
Brush in some worn oil
Will the colors transfer to the bait
Do you mean the paint get on the bait ? Only If it chips off but then you can pick it off of the bait

Not sure. I've only used the engine rustoleum paint I used in the video

Not really
Will this work on the ES Ripper?
It should

I was wondering have you ever painted a lead mold to try see if it will make the lead shin like this?
seems like all the do it molds makes the baits a dull looking bait
I wanted to try it but didn't want to ruin my mold with paint
I do the candle wax it helps a little but the lead still a dull tented not smooth an shinny
The temperature of the lead will burn the paint!
Lead temp, 622 degrees minimum. High heat engine paint, 500 degree rating.
will that work with the mold for the Gary yamamoto worms and still show all the rings and little ribs on the worms or will the paint fill up the mold to much preventing them from showing up
It should still have the details after painting.
Actually, it depends on how much paint you put on it. If you fill up the rings or whatever....they won't show.
I saw another guy did this...and he let the paint cure with the mold facing downward, to keep the paint from pooling and filling in the details on a senko style stickbait.

I don't get the taking time to mask it. Just spray the whole inside
Well the reason is that if you don't it might not shut as right and can get a little flashing on the baits
Why not just spray whole mold??
Because it can cause it not to close all the way. AMD if not closed all the way you can get "flashing"

Stays on pretty well. It started peeling a little bit. I haven't recoated it yet but it needs it
