+Michael Traynor Yeah I watched it again. One of his teamates was in an offside position when the ball is played. Rules were different then. Even the commentators are saying its a correct call except you for some reason.... How long have you been watching football?????
+The Phantom The rule he is referring to is that a team-mate can be in an offside position regardless of whether he is interfering with play as in this case...
@@donaldbaws1967 Yes it was "clsose"... Roy Mac something was atleast level with the last defender which would be called offside now. But back then it shouldnt have been. The ref made a call and he got it wrong.. But then its only Scotland, so.....
Unfortunately it was, under the rules as they were back then. The modern day offside rule we know now is much better as the change stopped the use of it to play negatively by some teams that became a problem in the mid-through-late 80s.
Re: the offside issue mentioned several times below: If you pause during the replay at 5:32, the moment the ball is played, you can clearly see that the Danish player nearest to the linesman is playing all of the Scotland players in the Danish box onside. It would appear that the linesman called it offside because he was looking further into the box and sees Aitken 'offside' with regard to the two Danish defenders retreating from the penalty box. He therefore misses the situation right in front of him. Human error, there have been worse decisions. Overall though, you make your own luck, and Scotland were justly punished for allowing Denmark countless times too much space in advanced central positions. Great skill by Laudrup in the 1st half, but should never have been given time to receive the ball and compose himself. Arnesen had 3 or 4 clear shots from outside the area and on another day one of them could have flown in, and then it wouldn't have mattered if Aitken's goal had stood.
One of several world cups where Scotland have performed well but had zero luck. The Scots were the better team in every game they played that tournament.
Yes incompetent officiating. The Scots had some great generations of players, but never quite managed to put it all together when it mattered, and were let down by some shocking defending at times. Gave the Germans two very soft goals in the next game.
Wonderful team of Scotland, but the results were so disappointing. Just like Portugal, another wonderful team of its time. Looking forward 4 years, it could have been Ireland's tournament. I wish I had lived through those times, I wish I was born in the 50s :(
Loved Souness as a player but think he was shot during this tournament. Was almost just strolling around against Germany and Denmark. With hindsight Ferguson should have kept him fresh for the Uruguay game, we missed en enforcer and a leader in that one
That was not offside, this should have been a draw and that would have put Scotland through in 3rd place to face Argentina. Which I think they deserved. Uruguay was the worst team in that group. Denmark, Scotland and Germany were really at very similar strength I think and Germany made it to the final. A shame for both of these 2 teams who were strong enough to have beat anyone that year. A year England got robbed too against Argentina, but with so small margins which could have seen both Denmark, Scotland, England, Spain, France, Soviet Union, Brazil and Belgium win it that year if not for some questionable refereeing.
That was a clear cut offside, orchestrated perfectly by the Danish defense. The offside trap was their specialty, Morten Olsen (no 4) the great conductor. Danish defense was a true offside machine, well oiled and all. Look the situation again, 3-4 Scotsmen right into the trap. Danmark was a true offside trap expert team. A well oiled offside machinery.
Scottish players didn't know what should they do for qualifying to the nest round...after death of Jock stien they had been lost....however...we wish to scotland to qualify to the world cup QATAR 2022 ❤️🏴

The world cup 1986 will never be repeated
Shame we got beat, My spirits were lifted though, When I went to see Simple minds @ Ibrox stadium, Glasgow, Two days later, An amazing gig.
Bloody hell...big Roy was on by about 2 yards. Billy McNeill must've been half cut when he says the ref/linesman got it right. Shocking call!
+Michael Traynor offside rules were different then. Roy Mc-something... wasnt offside but several of his team mates were
His name is Roy Aitken and unless the rules were, you're offside even if you're not offside....then no one was offside. Have you even watched it?

I had forgotten about those shorts
Stripe across the bum - it did look a little silly.
If you pause at 5:33 you will see that Aitken's goal was far from being offside. Denmark were lucky.
Indeed it wos offside

i live in front of that stadium, now it's barely used and not even for football matches.

The difference is that Arnesen missed, so its irrelevant what might have happened on a different day. Aitken scored and he was onside.
You don't need to freeze frame you can see it clearly. Aitkin was onside and so were all the other Scottish players. Very poor from the linesman
El estadio Neza que alguna vez albergo una copa del mundo, hoy no tiene equipo

Would it have made the vital difference for Scotland if Kenny Dalglish had been fit to play?
Yes incompetent officiating. The Scots had some great generations of players, but never quite managed to put it all together when it mattered, and were let down by some shocking defending at times. Gave the Germans two very soft goals in the next game.
Have a nice day. Thank you so much for the nice video. Enjoyed and liked of course. Baku city
Yup. That wasn't offisde!!
It was as per the rules back then
He was inline with the last defender...therefore he was offside per the rules back then.

fue en el estadio Neza 86 ,tuve la oportunidad de ir a mirar.
The way the Danes bypased the Scottish midfield with ease for their goal was shocking. I've seen better defensive shape in a Pub Team.

Watched this match as a ten yeae old, I seem to recall Charlie Nicholas breaking his leg in this match, can anyone confirm?
A Dane injured him but I thought he managed to play against some animals , who Steve Nicol did not score against
Nicholas was cynically fouled from behind with just the goalie to beat from edge of the box . He was carried off injured but leg wasnt broken .
i wishd id had old denmark jersey
Merecia mejor suerte en México 86 Escocia tal vez en otro grupo le hubiese ido mejor
