They were very naive. They had a group of top-quality creative and offence-oriented players but sb forgot to inform them that they had to pay attention to their rear as well, especially against a striker as fast as Butragueno, who could absolutely 'kill' you on the counter-attack. Two of the goals the Spanish scored were 'gifts' of the Danish defence; extremely silly and childish mistakes.

Looking at this video, I have the feeling that after the draw the Danish team became emotionally unbalanced, something that got worse after the goal of the turnaround on the scoreboard. The excessive individualism of Elkjaer also contributes a little, there are strikes of eminent goal where the assistance would be better than the direct kick. They could have taken a different direction for the game.
USSR and Denmark both were the best teams of the 86 World Cup but unfortunately they lost too much energy during the group stage. It would have been a great quarter final USSR vs Denmark!

Of course the decisive moment was the M.Olsen's mistake. But it was still 1-1. Elkjaer had good chances to score. And then again M. Olsen's mistake on Butragueno. Probably he was too devastated after his first mistake.
How did this game turn to 1-5? It is unbeliavable, Denmark was way better than Spain in that tournament, so sad for Elkjaer, one of the greatest forwards for all times to me.
Interesting, the 80s Spain was kinda the Barca - Madrid formation in 2010, and they say Spain had no golden generation before 2010. Even in the 60s Spain had great players (Di Stefano).
Di Stefano is not Spaniard (neither is Puskas or Kubala). However, they really had great players - all the the European Club Cups at that time + their first Euro title is from 1964.

Back when penalties were real penalties and when plays fell into the ground their legs had genuinely been taken out. Having said that, I cannot believe why the Spaniards were complaining about the Danish penalty. It was clearly a foul in the box!

Nonetheless I still remember them fondly, same as USSR and England. Overall the football was great.
Emilio dominated this match.
Man Butragueño was something else
Amazing second striker
Elkjaer was brilliant in this WC
I think the Danish team with the Russian and French team are the best championship teams.
And if the tournament went as expected, we would have seen a soccer ball in the last eight between Denmark and Russia.
Overall, it was the great Maradona tournament.
i was 13,oh man,i remember this game real well, what a disaster for Denmark, the curse of Spain already had started 2 years earlier in Euro 84.
If one bad back pass spells the end to your chances of winning a tournament, I would argue that you weren't good enough to win it in the first place.
Denmark was the best team in the cup until this macht. It nickname was Dinamachine. Saludos from Brasil! 🇧🇷
One of the weirdest results in WC. Still don't know how it could happen.
Beacuse Spain was simply a better team.
pure luck !
@@六O Oh yes. Try again.
Lack of Frank Arnesen? Too much self-confidence after beating West Germany and winning the group? Spaniards deadly efficiency? Yep.
Great videos!! What a beutiful kits!! That shirt (Dänemark) is simply awsome
Denmark and USSR both had very good teams but when it really mattered some of their passing and defensive errors cost both of them in this World Cup.
I remember that USSR had been gotten robbed against Belgium.
thanks for posting these games, much appreciated!
Coisas do futebol...
4:27 That straight-arm to the face might have been a send-off nowadays!
I thought the same. It seemed to be normal at that time
I thought Denmark and USSR were the two outstanding teams of this tournament. Unfortunately both lost to lesser teams. USSR lost to Belgium. This result was such a freak. Denmark dominated play and were leading 1-0. Then everything collapsed after letting in a stupid goal.
Why is there a McDonald's flag in the celebration of Spain's 3rd goal? LOL
Because of yellow and red colors
because hamburgesas are buenas !!!!
because ketchup and mustard are the colors of Spain
Because “They´re lovin´it“
I love the Denmark Hummel kit.So iconic.
I watched this match, before that Danish decimated Uruguay and told "we are red, we are white, we are danish dynamite", in this match they started pretty well and then surrendered completely to spain
Incredible support for us from the Mexicans in this game... I hope Spain get to play matches in Mexico again in 2026 (If we qualify) World Cup 😁
I remember I had to watch it late night because the hour difference. I was 16.
USSR and Denmark both were the best teams of the 86 World Cup but unfortunately they lost too much energy during the group stage. It would have been a great quarter final USSR vs Denmark!
Anyone can help where can I see the full match please
O Galeão espanhol destruiu o navio Viking!
butragueño is so incredibly good
I remember watching this match live
Why did world cups look better pre 1990 look better than post 1990?
Deliberate backpassing was less
@@virtuosowins back passing was allowed until 1990. So ironic no?
I think money hadn’t had such a hold on the game . Players knew each other better from home club sides and as a result better team game.
Of course the decisive moment was the M.Olsen's mistake. But it was still 1-1. Elkjaer had good chances to score. And then again M. Olsen's mistake on Butragueno. Probably he was too devastated after his first mistake.
Jesper Olsens mistake not Mortens.
Great match 👍👍
That second Spain goal is underrated.
I still remember this surprise
Because Denmark was stronger
Une des meilleures équipes espagnoles.
1. The Danes couldn't score as much. 2. Zubizarreta was a wall 3. Anything Butragueno touched, went in. 4. Spain countered well.
Back in the day I was so disappointed by this result (being a neutral) it's only now that I'm seeing footage of the game :D
Exactly like me!
I watched this match with my father... I couldn't believe that Denmark lost the match
The Vulture in fine form!

Grande Butragueño!!!!
Nice game
my idols spain butragueno. denmark olsen
Eljaer
Elkjaer ...amazing!!
Great game, exciting football
How did this game turn to 1-5? It is unbeliavable, Denmark was way better than Spain in that tournament, so sad for Elkjaer, one of the greatest forwards for all times to me.
If Elkjaer lays the ball off at 4:29, that is 2-1 Denmark and the result might have been very different.
A very good point. After such a run Elk. got exhausted so to pass to Laudrup would be an better option.
Dinamrca 86, Colombia e Camarões em 90 e Nigeria 94, faltaram tradição e experiência pra chegar a final e quem sabe serem campeões respectivamente.
Posiblemente lleves razón... yo incluiría a España tambien... 👍
the stupid backpass by J. Olsen completely destroyed denmark.
Real Madrid won all of the first five European Cups (1956-60).
No solo fué injusta, sino claramente insidiosa.

nimble zubizarreta and demolition butragueño
all the games of the knockout stage had sunny weather.
er...it was played in Mexico in June - what do you expect!?
The exception was the Argentina v Uruguay match ending in a sudden downpour.
Remember this match, it was shocking even to me as I was cheering for Spain.

Denmark looked amazing in the group stage, beating Uruguay 6-1 and Germany 2-0... and then they collapsed totally against Spain.

The Danes defense played very poorly but they will still lost in Penalty kick since the Spanish goalkeeper was one of the best in that world cup.

Ese Elkjaer era un crack.
Was gutted when the danes got turned over here, laudrup was my fav player.
Olsen is a penalty export. In my remember, he never lost.
3:40 Nice backpass, Denmark 😜
This video is traumatizing me. Please report yourself to TH-cam.
Desaster of Danmark very mysterious....
Back when penalties were real penalties and when plays fell into the ground their legs had genuinely been taken out.
Having said that, I cannot believe why the Spaniards were complaining about the Danish penalty. It was clearly a foul in the box!
