I feel sometimes a game being too realistic hurts it more than helps, the combat in this game is a good example of that. The fact that even if you can master the combat and still get rip to pieces by lowly bandits isn't fun.
Personally I disagree. It changes the pace of the game a lot and humbles you, it helps with the role play of the kind of person Henry is--a lowly blacksmiths son.
@BonejanglesTV low iq opinion imho. You aren't a lowly blacksmiths son by even the beginning of the story. I'm at Ginger in a Pickle. I've killed at least 10 people in single combat by now. Henry is serving under a knightly captain and is basically a man at arms of the gaurd even if not official. I should have the skills to defeat two brigands in combat. This game is ridiculous with its combat. I love every other part.
I think this game is just simply broken, it wasn't finished and ready for release. They hit deadlines and had to ship what they had. The combat is really bad.
Wrong guys wrong thats perfect block what you talk about Riposte is done by pressing bock and attakc at same time simultianously at perfect time block.
Its hilarious that i ended up thinking the only way to parry was to block while matching the sword direction like for honor. That would make this game 10x harder.
@@superroach3397 I do medieval combat on a weekly basis. It annoys me that I can't be better with a well made sword from the beginning, as any fighter feels instantly better with a well made sword than a cheaper, heavier one. My biggest bug-bear in my short amount of time in the game is how hard fighting two people is, mainly be the reticle having to be focused on one person. I'm up for learning to get good, but a lot of the use of shifting wards is intended for fighting one person. For fighting two I need to be able to pay full attention to both enemies at once. That said, I'm enjoying the game so far, just annoyed to have lost the same early combat multiple times already, making me feel stuck.
Thank you so much, this was super helpful, especially the interface explanation! I had no idea that the purple bar was enemy health - I thought it was a second health bar for serious wounds. Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but a riposte (master stroke) isn't random. I can make it happen almost 100% of the time if I start blocking exactly as the hands start to come down. If I wait just a fraction of a second longer, it doesn't happen. So, not random. :) I'm not sure if your weapon skill matters, though - I found that it got a bit easier to do as I approached level 20 in sword, so that might be part of it too.
I know this is an older video, but the Master Strike (unblockable attack after perfect guard) isn't random, it is just a smaller window to do, basically you block the second the weapon starts to move. It is harder to do if you are looking at the little green shield icon, as that normally pops up slightly after the weapon starts to move, hope this helps anyone new to the game! Keep your eye on the weapon hilt and you'll notice that with practice you'll pull off master strikes much much more consistently.
Honestly about the perfect block: I noticed that if you perfect block right as they start the animation of swinging you will hit the riposes always and it's not character skill based, well player skill based it is, as los long as you hit it at the time he starts swinging boom counter, i mashed captain ber-rebard by perfect blocking.
I've enjoyed the game for 20 hours so far (everything except combat that is), but still haven't figured out combat. I just got through with a lot of luck and sometimes being stuck in a situation for 30 minutes to an hour. I'm basically afraid to get into combat, but also suck at stealth, so I took a break for half a year. Trying to get into it again now that part 2 is getting closer. This video was very helpful, thank you! I really hope I can get through the story now and that the combat in the next one will be different.
I also love the perk that makes your weapons cause more bleed damage. You can cut one opponent, sik your dog on him, and then fight a 2nd or 3rd opponent and have a high chance at surviving.
I love this, I just picked it up for sale on ps4 and it's like Oblivion in so many ways, I haven't felt like this since 2006! I fought three or four guys so far, and usually, that "trick" that bernard teaches you slashes through like a charm. I'm getting better every fight. Seriously, this game is on Oblivion's level.
@@stanisawptak2509 So it'd be exactly like chambering, especially with the newer system in Bannerlord. Again, doesn't require a constrictive lock-on system

I look forward to going back and practising these moves against Captain ArseKicker! I've really struggled with the sword fighting and got frustrated but still a fantastic RPG.
The riposte is actually activated by blocking at the exact moment the green shield icon appears, if you do not block at the correct time you will preform a normal perfect block. I am pretty sure you can only do this after practicing master strikes or ripostes with Captain Bernard.
Dude thanks for the video actually helped a lot. I just one of the bosses faking a stab unlocking them insta stabbing because I didn’t know how to fight and it felt cheating. So the will deff help a lot. Also never knew what the purple bar was. Makes sense it’s enemies health. Just earned a new sub much love man.
Respectfully, I think you should have covered clinches. I could see a lot of new players getting into loads of clinches (probably accidentally like I did), and I think knowing what to do would be important for them. Plus clinches are a little OP once you know how to win each and every one of them.
@@Thegoatbirdman You really need the Perk for winning 30% more clinches, and then press the attack button very early into a clinch. Success depends on how high level the opponent is.

I just wanted to shoot a message to say thanks for posting this, you literally saved this game for me. Lol. I bout broke a few controllers over several days trying to get the feel for swordplay, was gonna give it up. Just happened to search for guides on the subject, stumbled on this vid. Watched it once, and no joke, it was like night and day when I jumped back into it. The game is terrible with tutorials, but it really is a great RPG as a whole. Thanks for the push through the rocky learning portion, I'm loving the game since!
Good guide, but you missed some key elements. 1. Perfect block does benefit from the direction of your weapon, although it is not necessary. Basically, if you match the direction of your weapon to the direction of your enemy's weapon, the window of opportunity to perform perfect block is higher. Perfect block followed up by well timed attack can only be dodged or parried by perfect block or master strike, otherwise it is a guaranteed hit. 2. Master Strike is not random. In order to perform it you need to block at the very moment the green shield appears (often a moment before it even appears so you need to watch your opponent's movement). If you are too slow, you will perform a perfect block instead. Similar to the above, if you match your opponent's stance, window for Master Strike is higher. This was confirmed by the dev on the official forums. And an advise from my end - if the group is too tough for you, mount up, circle around them while shooting arrows and thin that group down ;) Although once you spend some time with Robard, the game becomes too easy.
I must thank you for bringing this game to light..you were the first you-tuber to show this and i gotta admit i slated most of your vids ( combat shit, main char shit etc etc etc.) well i was ermmmm WRONG its a fantastic game dare i say in many ways it beats the witcher 3?? ...well im off those herds wont pick themselves...
this is not Dungeon and dragons. Hell this game even introduced itself as dungeons and NO dragons. So dont bother bringing this fantasy bullshit into historical game. There are no hand and half swords.
@@17MrLeon erm...Bastard sword and hand and a half sword are both real things, not invented by DnD. The term hand and a half sword came into usage, according to Wikipedia, in the 19th century, which may just be a little bit before the creation of DnD I think. Also glad this game doesn't have any fantasy bullshit in it. Like alchemy allowing you to brew magic potions that instantly heal broken bones or anything. Because that would just ruin the historical accuracy.

I go look on forms to see if anyone else has this issue and all I see are comments like "I beat hans immediately" and "hans is the easiest duel" . Never have I ever seen a game with such bad game design that you literally die, even when you follow instructions or a path that is obviously shown.

LMFAO same. The tourney is actually broken. The other dude has infinite stamina and will literally block everything even after you perfect block his azz.
@@supasf the tourney was added as something to do when you finish the game. Its nice that they added it that you can take part now eve nbefore that but by no means it is intented to join when you are just a fucking pleb
4:20 also just to point out, it really applies to when you are wearing plate armour against a sword. If you have no plate armour on, you will take direct damage. And with danage from a mace may get through. Arrows, depending on type, will bypass the stamina.
Ok, the first tipp alone is so useful, I only been to Bernard the first time, I acutally came back a few times but he never stood there anymore so I thought this is kinda gone after the tutorial thing.
Also Riposte isn't random you have to press block before you would press it to preform a perfect block. (Usually as soon as you see them start to move their weapon for a swing at you)
I don't know if this comment will be any good on a 6 years old video, but here we go: Master Strike IS NOT the same as Riposte (at least not currently). And isn't, certaintly, random at all. MS has a really tiny window in comparisson with Perfect Block's window. Which in this last one, is visually hinted as a green shield. If you perform a PB and press Strike (or Stab, I believe is the same) button at the same time, you'll get a Riposte. Which will lead to a chain of slow mo QTEs with your oponent if they do the same as you. But MS is possible to trigger every single time if you press BLOCK at the beggining of your oponent's strike. There are a few videos at this point about how broken and OP MS is for combat, and how easy is to spot the timing as well.
thank fucking christ someone finally did this video. i actually stopped playing when they buggered up the invert-look combat interaction with one of the patches

@@BonejanglesTV yawn
@BonejanglesTV low iq opinion imho. You aren't a lowly blacksmiths son by even the beginning of the story. I'm at Ginger in a Pickle. I've killed at least 10 people in single combat by now. Henry is serving under a knightly captain and is basically a man at arms of the gaurd even if not official. I should have the skills to defeat two brigands in combat. This game is ridiculous with its combat. I love every other part.
So Captain Bernard have dual personalities...when he's on fighting mode he summonss the inner Captain Robard.
eevry tiem i look for soemthing to do with any game, you pop up.. consistently.. worth a sub alone
I've always wanted a game with really in-depth sword and board combat. No RPG has scratched that itch but this game is perfect
zhain0 it’s not perfect but it’s well made compared to other rpg’s combat system.
Just wishing Mordhau had a RPG in the works
Then you will have to play Mordhau, not this game...
A game with a For Honor battle system as an RPG would be amazing !
I think this game is just simply broken, it wasn't finished and ready for release. They hit deadlines and had to ship what they had. The combat is really bad.
Thank's for this, probably the best video on this I've seen
Riposte is not random, you riposte when you block immidiatly when your enemy just begins to swing his sword at you 👍
I thought that was the case the timing is more strict than the normal perfect block
Exactly, it's NOT random. You have to press block after the attacker starts the attacking animation and before the shield shows up.
Why isnt this comment at the top?
Wrong guys wrong thats perfect block what you talk about Riposte is done by pressing bock and attakc at same time simultianously at perfect time block.
Jiří Dušek
No. You're wrong, and correcting someone who's correct with bad information makes you look quite stupid
Lol had no idea stamina was a shield. You just saved me from the brain anuerism I had forming by being spanked so much in this game not knowing that.
Its hilarious that i ended up thinking the only way to parry was to block while matching the sword direction like for honor. That would make this game 10x harder.
That's what I've been trying to do 😭😭😭
i'm impressed that they were able to make a combat system that reflects actual sword combat pretty well.
this has to be the gold-standard for every upcoming rpg
It really doesn't take this long to attack with swords. THEY ARE NOT THAT FUCKING HEAVY, YES REALLY. This system is fucking awful.
@@TheFleeingPhoenix I mean...Medieval combat is actually hard though and complex. Plus, it depends on what sword your using and your stats.
Except it takes 50 stabs to the face to kill a bare naked man
@@superroach3397 I do medieval combat on a weekly basis.
I just spent like 4 hours fighting with Bernard, and I finally feel slightly competent. I love it.
Same lol took me about 4 hours till I could learn repostle and actually start hitting him back lol. Was worth it :)
It's like training in real life sort of like after spending that amount of time now I get the controls lol
These tips are so useful. I've been playing for around half a year and just learned that a feint is done like that.
The lock-on system is really clunky. They should have just done a free-movement Mount and Blade-style system
I really like it
It wouldnt work for this style of combat
@@AlbinoKneecaps Why not?
@@LordSluggo All the attacks, parries and combos are precisely animated, both fighters have to be aligned in a certain way for it to work
@@stanisawptak2509 So it'd be exactly like chambering, especially with the newer system in Bannerlord. Again, doesn't require a constrictive lock-on system
Reading the comments here, jeez there are some ungrateful little pricks around! Thank you for taking the time to make this video it is very helpful to a noobie on this game. I look forward to going back and practising these moves against Captain ArseKicker! I've really struggled with the sword fighting and got frustrated but still a fantastic RPG.
This game is so addictive! I didn’t think I was going to like it either.
I like how at the beginning you correctly called him Captain Bernard, and then for some reason for the rest of the video kept calling him "Rebard"
The riposte is actually activated by blocking at the exact moment the green shield icon appears, if you do not block at the correct time you will preform a normal perfect block. I am pretty sure you can only do this after practicing master strikes or ripostes with Captain Bernard.
Yeah, that's how it's done. I'm glad someone else called this out xD
Correct, and infuriating. I want to start over with the skills I've learned, but they're behind a grindwall.
and if im not mistaken a perfect block is when you are blocking in the correct direction depending upon the strike incoming ya?
Thank you very much. You have saved this game for me. I have 100h on it and was ready to drop it because of combat being so confusing.
3 videos in a day!? You’re on a mad one Danny😂
Thanks bro :D
Literally dead
Aha take care of yourself :)
Used to love your Skyrim videos, so glad you made KCD vids as well, great work as always
I literally went through the whole game never learning riposte. I didn't know that was a thing.
nice lie bud u cant progress further w/o it
Same Here, i Kept clenching Then attack. Learned riposte on the second playthrough.
@@I3arett yes you can dipass if you never go back to train again you never learn it and you never have to
Dude thanks for the video actually helped a lot.
HOW?? please I keep getting my teeth knocked in
@@Thegoatbirdman You really need the Perk for winning 30% more clinches, and then press the attack button very early into a clinch. Success depends on how high level the opponent is.
@@GuidedByCompassion do you spam click attack button, or is it time based such as parrying? I have the perk now.
@@Thegoatbirdman press it once early in the clinch. As early as possible. I think spam clicking gets you beaten.

Thanks for making this video dude. Just picked up a few tips and this helped clear some confusion.
Banging!!
Fair warning to players. After the new patch, the guards WILL search the horse for stolen goods if you have a bounty. Escaped from Sausau fully loaded, put everything stolen on the horse, payed the fine, just to find out that he took gears for about 3000 :(
Thanks for the tips, mate.
'God be with you.'
No amount of combat tips can help you with Henry looking away from your opponent when trying to switch gaurds
thats why i only use stab attack, if i move the mouse too slowly it wont change stance, and if i move it too fast Henry turns around.
Same, but I'm on xbox
@@codname1891 Yeah, It happens a lot even on xbox. Literally, henry starts facing down and turning away from the opponent. Then I end up getting hit because of it lol. But I enjoy the game overall
On pc just press tab you dumbass

Stop trolling us poor peasants eso, give us part 13 or we will call youtube police
That's good news! I put this game on the back burner after escaping in the beginning & thought I'd need to start over to relearn fighting from that guy at the beginning.
Got into this game way late but can someone explain how a man not wearing a face guard survives 3 face stabs before finally killing me?
Garrett Wilder because it’s historically accurate!
Stamina
Haxanlord stamina is the better answer
Bug!
Your sword and skill is very good lol train it up and get a nice sword I killed the runt with one strike to the head 😁 I laughed so much
I just wanted to shoot a message to say thanks for posting this, you literally saved this game for me.
A bastard sword is actually a 'Hand and a Half' sword, which is slightly different than a long sword. A long sword is just a bit longer.
this is not Dungeon and dragons.
@@marlondaniels7912 What i wanted to say is it was not used back when swords were used. They just class them like we do today with everything. They just called them all swords.
I’m so glad I played Forhonor it may have been a lot simpler of an attack and defense scheme but it helped a lot with the basics for this game.
Alright I'm gonna rant. I hate this game. Every duel I lose, I only won against bandits in Skalitz. But the tournament, this guy during training and Hans all beat me.
I apply all things I learn during training and nothing works. Even the community is just probably the worst I have ever seen. I go look on forms to see if anyone else has this issue and all I see are comments like "I beat hans immediately" and "hans is the easiest duel" . And I'm pretty sure they are on their fifth playthrough, so it's really hypocritical.
I genuinely dislike this game, and will probably uninstall. Never have I ever seen a game with such bad game design that you literally die, even when you follow instructions or a path that is obviously shown.
i been this game since you first mention it, and damm, now i have it and i have so much to do im overwhelming and anxious , i cant wait to fully experience this game!
Can you get back with the main quest please ? Can’t wait to see the camp attack and the rest of the story. Really enjoying your walkthrough 👍
been playing for 40+ hours and i never even thought of going back to talk to that old bastard. huge thanks. wish they wouldve tossed me a “hey henry, heard sgt bernard was lookin for you by the combat arena” or something
Hopefully you aren't too dead to upload play through 13. Videos are great.
Can someone help me understand feints a bit more do you change direction once you let go of holding attack or change it just before you let go to attack
this just doesnt work for me...no matter what I try I just keep getting combo'd endlessly I can't even do mine
I didn't know stamina was a shield to my health! Cool!
I started this game since launch(one of the best game ever played in my life) mastered the combat, but had to leave it before finished the game because a game breaking bug preventing from finish the story quest, and then I came back after 2 years, completely forgot how to combat 😂
I recently hated your playthroughs because it simply wasn't my style, but this guide right here is the best definition of what your channel is all about. It was fun, informative and actually useful. It reminded me why I used to like your work so much. Thank you!
After hours of training with him walking asap to the tourney to pwn and wreck them, to get lots of gold. Still gets beaten by the first guy. GG. Better go play minecraft

Great video thanks so much was about to quit the game because combat was so difficult thanks
Can we get back to main quest and what’s happening with the attack on cuman camp
he spent 13 hours making 3 videos today give him a break he did neaither eat food
4:20 also just to point out, it really applies to when you are wearing plate armour against a sword. If you have no plate armour on, you will take direct damage. And with danage from a mace may get through. Arrows, depending on type, will bypass the stamina.
Eso you forget to mention which magika skill tree to invest in if you're doing a spellsword build.
Ok, the first tipp alone is so useful, I only been to Bernard the first time, I acutally came back a few times but he never stood there anymore so I thought this is kinda gone after the tutorial thing.
I actually got max strength and max sword before I even went on Lord Capon's hunt xD
Also Riposte isn't random you have to press block before you would press it to preform a perfect block. (Usually as soon as you see them start to move their weapon for a swing at you)
Thank you. I did not understand any of this and was about to remove the game from my comps storage.
CAPTAIN BERNARD!!!! it doesnt say Captain Robard!!!!
Oliveira Ferus To be fair he called him Bernard alot.
I don't know if this comment will be any good on a 6 years old video, but here we go:
Master Strike IS NOT the same as Riposte (at least not currently).
Okay but why are you doing damage, while I can land 50 hits and my opponent is still full hp
Probably has a decent sword
Exactly lmao
thank fucking christ someone finally did this video. i actually stopped playing when they buggered up the invert-look combat interaction with one of the patches
Thank you my guy, I was constantly wondering why I never countered after perfect blocks, and was getting frustrated whenever someone did it to me; big reason I lost the first tourny I tried.
