In 1922 Ernst Julius Öpik, an astronomer, made a calculation of the distance to the galaxy Andromeda using an astrophysical method based on the observed rotational velocities of the galaxy, which depends on the total mass around which stars are rotating, and on the assumption that the luminosity per unit mass was the same as that of our galaxy. He concluded that the distance was 450 kpc. It was a profound implication because that was the earliest supportive evidence given for any objects being outside our own galaxy.

Oh I hate reboots! My great grandparents used to talk about how they waited in line for hours to see this movie! It was Don Lockwood, Rudolf Valentino, pre-sound Joan Crawford, Laurel and Hardy, and Conrad Veidt at their finest!

There's such a creepy feeling to the opening title. The pitch keeps changing to emphasize the effect of an old recording worn down by time. I can't help but feel like I'm watching a scary video with a vintage asthetic and the screen is gonna go blank for a good 10 seconds just to make me feel an unending dread.

1920s sorta works, but it wasn't until 1924 that anyone knew what galaxies even were. Before Edwin Hubble figured it out, astronomers thought Andromeda was a small spiral nebula and that the Milky Way contained most if not all the stars in existence. And it takes time for new scientific discoveries to filter through popular culture.
So a late 1920s Star Wars _might_ have opened with the famous words, but really, it wouldn't be very likely.
