- Retainers are the most important thing about orthodontics. You can make the teeth look beautiful and do everything correctly, but if a patient doesn't wear their retainer, then it was all for nothing as teeth will shift back.
Let me explain the three basic types of retainers and how you should wear them.

I just got my hawley retainer because I bit through my top clear one, one night and chipped my tooth. This one also helps me from not grinding on my teeth as much. Just the feel of the plastic on my teeth makes me want to bite down
Same I get exreme jaw and headache from my bottom essix retainer I clench on it without knowing it. Maybe I should ask my ortho for a hawley? How is it with Hawley did you stopped biting on it is it better? Thank YOU
@@sofluffyunicorn hi! Yes it has stopped me from biting down or clenching my jaw when I’m stressed. I definitely recommend you talk to your ortho about and some of the options they might have for you.
Oh my god- at 3:03 when you mentioned the expanders and how a metal retainer would be better, my ortho NEVER even mentioned this to me, I’ve gone through so many retainer and I’m doing everything right but they just Keep. Cracking. I didn’t even know metal retainers were a thing- Thank you, I’m definitely gonna look into getting one!!
just got hawley retainers and the pain hit me like a truckload!! i miss my braces 😭😭
I have the hawley and clear retainer. But I prefer the hawley one because I feel like it holds my teeth together more. It's a tighter fit. The clear one feels a little too loose. I only wear the hawley retainer at night. My braces were removed in 2002.

Very informative. So a WaterPik would not keep a permanent retainer cleaned huh Dang it! Wow. This video just made my decision. I’m nearing the end of my treatment. I was leaning towards a permanent retainer. I hadn’t been made privy to the pros and cons of either just yet. Now I’ll know what I’m talking about when it gets to this point. Thank you so much!

I like the idea of the Essix retainer and I think they are more effective but I just can't stand them I clench my teeth with them and I can't wear them in the night because I wake up with extreme jaw pain and headache so do you think Hawley is a better option for me because there is no plastic covering my teeth does an only bottom teeth Hawley retainer exists. I now have a bottom Essix retainer and a fixed upper and lower retainer. Thank you

I just got permanent retainers. I had braces as a kid and always lost my retainers. This time around I haven’t broken a bracket. I think I’m good.

Which retainer do you recommend for a patient that has had extractions of the first premolars ? A Hawley thats wraparound or a regular hawley ??
my orthodontist literally had to force my bottom retainer in and it it’s super uncomfortable. we i explained my discomfort he said that it is normal but i can barely get it back in
The front wire on my hawley retainers is broken and has fallen off but the retainers still fit in my mouth and feel fine. Will they still work without the front wire or do I need to get new ones?

I have 2 permanent retainers and 2 clear plastic ones. In your opinion do permanent retainers keep teeth straight as effectively as plastic ones? I mean, can molars and premolars also relapse because the permanent one doesn't cover them?
I have the Essex, I hate them, I grind my teeth in the night with them. My dog just ate my upper Essex so my orthodontist wanted me to have the Hawly now because they like them better. On another note….I got my braces off 3 years ago and my teeth are still a little loose and wiggly… is that normal? I was 44 when I got braces, and had one tooth removed to make space, and, I had 2 implants that could not be moved.
Hmmmmmm. Interesting. So I finished my invisalign last year the first time.. I had bonded and vivera on bottom and just vivera on top. I wore them still full time and my incisors started flaring out I was freaking out! Went back into invisalign for about 5 months I think. 2nd time I finished I put bonded on top and not yet on bottom but plan to and then also have vivera. After doing invisalign for 3 yrs I'm quite used to wearing trays and don't really have an issue except when both top and bottom vivera in I have a lisp hahah. I get teeth cleaning twice a year and I check with my little mirror on top metal retainer and I don't see any gunk so I'm hoping I'm good! One thing I noticed tho is for at least first 2 yrs of full time wear still with vivera my trays won't last as long they loosen up. I finished Nov 2021 and I'm on my 3rd set of retainers and I have 4 sets. So every year I'll have to get a new set.. whatever I need to do to keep my teeth from moving. Mine unfortunately seem to be the stubborn kind so fun! Everyone's case is different tho just telling my story :) thanks for your vid!
Is it ok to not wear a lower essix retainer and use a Hawley on the top instead of Essix? I am going through another round of braces and my bite will never be perfect but I want my teeth to settle to attain that naturally over time without too much movement. Does essix prevent teeth from settling? Ideally wouldn't want lower crowding long term but would be willing to compromise that for a functional natural bite without relapsing too much, but also allow more leeway to settle.
I got the Hawley retainers when I was 19. That was 16 years ago 😳 . To me was comfortable to wear it.
Can you just get the hawley retainer without getting braces ?

Dr. I hope you can give me a advice my daughter is going to have her braces off but she is bitten edge to edge I'm worry about wearing off all her teeths with time can I discuss it with her orthodontic before she removed them to fix her bite.

Question for anyone, is the hawley retainer supposed to hug the roof of the mouth or should there be a bit of space?
I have been wearing one for 20 years and now got a new one but it’s not snug to the roof of my mouth. I’ve already gone back to this dentist 4 x over this and I’ve had enough of her. Please help
not asking for medical advice but a general question regarding Howley Retainer with Hydrax finger spring. Can an 8 yr old get such a retainer to fix a misaligned upper incisor tooth. No braces. Want to try the retainer first. I know every case is different but can an 8 yr old use a Howley retainer before considering braces?

Do Hawley retainers or Essix Retainers hold your teeth in place better? I'm about to get my braces off and my orthodontist is old fashioned and will probably give me a Hawley but I really want an essix retainer
I have a essix and I going to switch to hawley because I clench on the essix retainer (the plastic part. I get jaw and headache pain.

I had the hawley style retainer when I was 10. I used them 24-7 but my bottom teeth stated to move very fast in the first couple of years without braces. Now I’m 27 and I think only permanent one can help my bottom teeth after removing braces. Also worried about builds up 😂

I am so nervous about permanent retainers. I am supposed to get it installed today. If the permanent does break, as you mentioned, the wearer could swallow the wire, (especially while asleep) right? 😳
Most likely, if it breaks, it will only break on one side. The bonding will come off of one tooth. There's only one wire. It should stick to the other tooth. So, it shouldn't be swallowed!

Hello Doctor...I've midline diastema and leteral gaps too. My dentist has put on hawleys retainer without braces.Will this retainer close my gaps?
Maybe but probably not.
My son just had his braces put on, but the orthodontic said he will need to wear the hawley retainer at the same, during eating as well. Is this right to wear retainer at the same time?

I wear a hawley sometimes but mainly the clear plastic ones.

Im about to get my braces off in a month and JUST TODAY i found out i have to wear retainers FOREVER.

hi. so i had a fixed retainer (lingual) after my braces and it broke, i had some minor teeth shifting and the my orthodontist gave me hawley retainers for the adjustment of the teeth. is that the right method? please help me out as i’m not confident of my teeth going back to its place

Please help me with this , my doctor pushed my front tooth down a bit so they are the same length , can the tooth move back upwards after braces or no , and will the plastic retainer be able to hold it from going back upwards or i have to have the permanent one too?
The plastic retainers should hold it.

I hate my hawley retainer, my bottom retainer keeps hurting my gums, before my right, then my left, now both. Why did I even get braces in the first place.

Yes they will relapse and you will have to go through the procedure again!! If you are not wearing your retainers start wearing them religiously!
Yup. If you do not wear retainers your teeth will shift.
