This is a great travel and nature camera. In it's price range there's absolutely nothing like it. Small, lightweight, excellent zoom and waterproof. It's only limitation is the sensor size, which obviously struggles in low light, but lately machine learning based noise reduction software has become extremely good which allows this camera to keep offering wonderful shots, even better than when it was released. I use DxO PureRaw and it really does wonders with high noise images from the FZ300.
I am using it for video primarily for my online courses, meetings and some you tube (soon to come). It does an excellent job (way more than what I need). BTW, I am using a battery pack to bypass that 30 mins cap. In the documentation, they say that the camera will go continuously for 4 hrs, with he pack, then it will stop for 2 mins. After that, you can start again. Needless to say that I never need it to record past the 1.5 hrs mark, tops. BTW, super review, thanks for that!
I guess I missed that in the manual that it will go past 30 minutes on the battery pack. I have never had the need to record for that long and I just recently purchased the battery adapter. That is good to know. Thank you so much for letting me know and thanks for watching.
@brianbr5388 I assume that's what he means. I demonstrate the battery simulator in part 2 of this video. But I haven't tested to see if it ignores the 30 minute time limit in that mode.
Agreed. Every year, I look to see if there is a newer and better camera in this class, and there isn't one. And probably cost more as you said. Thanks for watching.
Nice footage! I got this as a camcorder alternative. As you were saying it is much cheaper than a 4k camcorder. I find myself using it more as a photo camera so far, but I am hoping to use it for nature and wildlife videos.
I could use some tips on wildlife and nature photography. People ask me for examples and I have none, lol. This is still my “best” camera I haven’t found anything else I like in this price range. Thanks for watching.
I had no idea it would become legendary when I bought it 9 years ago. But there is still nothing better in that price range in my humble opinion. Thanks for watching.
Got mine at about the same time Thought the fz 1000 was a step up with the larger sensor but not much in it. The fz 300 is still tops may be due for an update soon
Enough people have asked about this that I will make a video about it. There is nothing off the shelf that will work, but if you start with the AC Adapter and replace the plug in power adapter with a 8.4 volt battery it should work. Not sure how tolerant the camera is but 9v is probably as close as you will get with a battery. I'll let you know when I post the how to video. Thanks for watching.
Hey I know this videos quite old but I’m looking to get into surf videography and I’m wondering if this camera is a better option than the fz1000 which I have been using. I need a larger zoom and this camera has that but I’m worried if it will produce better quality video.
The FZ300 is still on Panasonic's website, but it is becoming scarce. It may be out of production finally. As of today, it is still arguably my nicest camera, but that is about to change. I have an FX2500 on order and will be reviewing it shortly. To answer your question, the FZ300 does have a greater zoom, but it is able to do that due to the smaller sensor. And you are going to give up megapixels to get that extra reach. However, 4k video only requires 8mp, and other cameras are going to crop the sensor in video anyway, so the difference in video is not as dramatic as the megapixel numbers suggest. I am a fan of bridge cameras in general because they do everything without worrying about lugging along extra lenses. And almost no one makes a new one anymore, which is why I ended up with a renewed FZ2500. A renewed FZ300 would probably meet your needs if extra zoom is your primary requirement. Another choice, but a little pricey, is the Nikon Coolpix P1000. But is has a ludicrous 125x optical zoom. It also was the smaller sensor, but again, for 4k, probably not noticeable. Also, it's a slow lens, but for outdoor, maybe not an issue. Another option to stay with the 1" sensor is the Sony RX10 IV. It gives you a 25x optical zoom but is the most expensive of them all. Sadly, the market seems to have abandoned bridge cameras and expects everyone to carry a backpack full of lenes. I will be buying used cameras from now on, I guess. Thanks for watching.
@ByronMcDonald-j6d I think the FZ300 is still the best value for your money, but you might have to settle for a used one. I was not able to find them being sold new anymore, but I didn't look everywhere, obviously. In terms of 4k and zoom it will be an upgrade. The Sony or Nikon would also be an upgrade but quite a bit more expensive.
@hobbyonlyphotography the 10 year run seems to be finally over. It is still on Panasonic's website, but out of stock everywhere. Maybe they will make more? Or maybe it's over? I don't know.

The Sony HX400v is a similar camera with a long 50x optical zoom, (versus 24x on the FZ300), but the biggest difference is that the FZ300 has 4K video and the Sony only supports 1080P. For me that's a deal breaker as I primarily shoot video. But if you are primary a stills shooter the Sony has a higher pixel count 20.4 Mp versus 12.1 Mp. The FZ is f2.8 across the entire range and the Sony is not. It all depends how you use it, but I prefer the Panasonic. Thanks for watching.
