This man is a fabricator, bodyman, buffer, painter, engineer, artist, thinker out of the box, and a man on a mission. But most of all he’s a genius restorer of these timeless classics they call Tonka Toys !
I accidentally came across this fire truck video and my jaw dropped. This was the firetruck my dad and I used on Saturday mornings to put out a building fire in the backyard, only the building was a large cardboard box. I couldn't believe that it was actually the same truck till I saw the hydrant and fire hoses. My dad would cut windows in the box to simulate a warehouse, light it on fire, and the pumper would put it out. One morning a local cop jumped up on the fence to see what the smoke was from. He thought our house was on fire. As I recall the hoses on the first truck we had screwed on rather than pushed onto the hydrant and truck. My dad would comment how cheap that was. Anyway, thanks for bringing back what was only a memory till now.
When I was a kid, back in '63 or '64, my grandparents bought me one of those fire trucks. I loved it, but was never allowed to take it outside to hook it up to the garden hose. They didn't want me to get muddy! Oh, well. Some 57 years later I finally get to see it in action. Better late than never! Looks just as I remember it. Great restoration. Never would have guessed so many parts went into its construction.
For us kids back then, it was a simple toy. Little did we know, and realized just how complex the design and assembly were. Again, a masterclass restoration job.
I, too, find myself amazed at just how many separate parts there are. I played with a lot of Tonka Trucks and never knew how complex they were. Why can he restore them? ... Because things back then were quality made, well built toys, meant to last longer than a year or two. I wish I still had all of mine 😣
As a "recent kid" i Wish my toys were like these, most of the time i used to get cheapy plastic models that would shred to pieces in a matter of weeks, my most valued toy possession is a Abarth 131 in alitalia livery that i bought when i was 14(i'm 22 now and my passion for boxy cars sublimed when i bought my alfa 75) but almost none of the other toy cars i had lasted to this day
The beauty of these restorations is that there is no spray paint used. Everything is polished, cleaned, replaced, if needed. It’s so incredibly proper!
Terrific restoration. Love the details on these old Tonka toys. Example: They could have saved a few cents by putting only 2 wheels on the rear axle, but they didn't, props to the people who made these.
Awesome renovation. I really like the attention to all the details you take, all the tiny details. Like straightening tabs and edges that need it, sandblasting the insides too. Showing all the replacement parts. Do so much that so many others do not do or show. Note: I said so many others, NOT all others. You even demonstrate that they work. It is amazing how many pieces and parts there are. When you are tearing down, it does not seem so much, then you show them all laid out. WOW! I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for sharing with us. Take care and stay safe. ♥😺♥🤗♥
Magnificent! And you have both a red one and a white one. Better than new and a testament to your skill and patience. I hope you are passing these skills along to a younger generation. Thanks for sharing.
What i think about beside the great restoration is that at one time each of these toys were a kids Christmas or maybe a birthday present. The joy that each one must have given a child. The little things each of us leave behind in the journey of life that for a moment in time meant the world to us. Amazing.
Of all the restorers, I think you do the best. You take the time to really perfect the metal work and you even wet sand the primer out before doing color. You also do a great job of building your own parts when needed. Also love your junk yard sheep! 🐑
I received this nearly identical Tonka fire truck for my 8th birthday, 63 years ago. I still have it, so watching you work on this one made me a bit misty-eyed. You do terrific, and important, work. By the way, my Tonka truck is white, but every other detail, down to the filigree and the little dials, are exactly the same as your truck. Imagine my joy at seeing you breathe new life into it.
This is another wonderful restoration. I had to pause for a moment as I swore I had seen this before. Turns out, what I was thinking of was another restoration from another channel of one of these trucks in equally horrible condition. I guess nearly all these poor little trucks have ended up in about the same shape and have nearly all the same parts missing off of them. Additionally, good on you for listing the parts and materials. I think far too many people take for granted just how expensive it is to restore a toy like this.
I had a very similiar fire truck , like this, I got for Christmas, in 1957. The truck was a 1956 Ford. It also had the same hose reel. It came with a hose adapter, in the form of a fire hydrant; inlet was garden hose, outlet was a suction hose, mounted on the truck hose rack, that fed the truck, and water came out of the hose reel nozzle. The hydrant was a shut off valve, worked with a mini hydrant wrench actually shut off the water. I loved it.....!!!!!!
That's a lotta parts. In my few months watching your channel, this is by far the longest video I've seen. So satisfying to see you restoring this. Keep up the good work. 👍
14:38. The side hose mount background went from a small piece of metal to just a decal on the finished product. Great restore. Impressive with the powder coating of the extinguisher going to chrome. Looks great. Just when I thought you couldn’t top the last restore ...........or the previous one....or the one before .....etc. etc.
I never knew it cost that much to restore these toys. I admire your passion on these restoration and share to all of us with well documented video for us to enjoy..thank you so much!!!
Just imagine how many imaginary fires these trucks put out and how many cats were saved from trees with those little latter's. These toys were from when we had imaginations and went outside to play the kids now days no nothing about that kind of fun and all the places you could go right there in your own backyard it wont about how much it cost or how new it was it was just about the fun and being a kid. Back when all you needed was a good old fire truck and a good imagination and some dirt to play in that truck would make you a hero in your own backyard. Much love from me and mine to you and yours. Love the videos and keep up the awesome work.
Love to see the toys that I played with as a kid again, You do a great job of making them look like they just came out of the box. I'm glad that I did not keep them in a box and had years of fun with my friends destroying the toys my mom and dad gave me, but now I wish I keep them in better shape so my son could have had them too. They just don't make them to last now and the ones that are made to last are priced so high that they are collector items and will sit in a case and never be used for the years of fun that they should be used for. Always make me sad to see toys stuck in a case were kids can't gain from the joy and fun that they were made for. I don't think I would have built machines for all the years I did if I didn't have the years of playing with all the Tonka toys that I had as a kid. If your going to buy a toy to save, buy one for your kids to destroy. When you see there eyes light up as they are playing with them, you can't put a price on it and that is the way it should be.
I got a Tonka firetruck for Christmas in 1977. While it didn't look like that one, the rubber hoses were exactly the same. I had a fire hydrant too, but I don't remember having to use a wrench to open and close it, I think mine had a spoked wheel on top instead. Great job on the restoration.
What an incredible amount of parts to make one toy fire truck! You have done it proud to complete this amazing restoration to an exceptionally high standard. Plus you have set a new bench mark when it comes to sheep dipping!!! Stay safe
Now....that's the right grinder for rivets....Ty....... powder coating chrome pitted areas good idea........love your efforts at details and obtaining missing pieces....very nice
Of all restoration videos, I love your the most. It's so much fun watching you restore such complex toys to perfection. And it so satisfying that you always strive to keep to the same original colours. Your amazing (mostly Tonka) toys collection, junkyard, cute sheeps and kitty, keep the kiddy in me alive!
Your craftsmanship, editing and just shear... talent is so worth the channel. Your humor with these lil sheep at the end is why I stay 😬. And the adorable kitty is the icing on the cake. Very nice wrk.
I was 7 years old when this model of truck came out. These videos really make me want to shut off my computer, turn off the news, grab some Tonka metal trucks and toys, go outside and play. Just play. In a big pile of dirt. Until my Mom shouts out the back screen door "supper!"
That is beautiful. I love the ending. Please make sure the sheep dry out before you put them back in the scrap yard. An amazing and totally enjoyable video. Thank you Chip. Watch those fingers near that brush, my neighbour just injured his finger badly working on a machine. We are under lockdown again and I am lucky enough to be classified essential so I get to go towork and out of the house for a few hours a day. Stay safe.
Ok. I admit it. The kid in me was secretly hoping you would demonstrate the water coming through the hydrant, into the truck, and spray some water. There. Ok I said it. 😂😂😂
It's no wonder that I got more fun out of my GI Joe and accessories. Dolls were so lame and so boring. Always envied boy's toys, thank goodness I had an older brother, I got his cool stuff when he outgrew it. Another nice restoration, love your channel!

Great restoration and fantastic display by the Chip Channel Sheep Stunt Team. But not enough sheep at the beginning!!! The pick up truck needs a driver and the sheep stunt team can push!
I can certainly understand why people send you their beloved old toys. They know the toys will get a first class restoration and a great home. Plus the sheep will always be there to guard them.
I've really been enjoying your channel & watching your incredible restorations! And I really love seeing your beautiful cat at the end. Makes me really miss the two I had, best companions ever. 😎

I have one of these in white... destroyed by my sister's freaking brat kids.. I have starting to look for all the replacement parts necessary. I also have an earlier (1956?) ladder truck, missing a few parts, most notably the wheel and threaded shaft used to elevate the ladder. Needs the loose ladders too. By the way, the hose reel on this was originally bare metal, perhaps a zinc or aluminum alloy. The original fire hydrant that fastened to a common yard hose was indeed red on both the white trucks as well as the red trucks. This episode is very inspiring.. makes me want to hurry up restoration of our old family heirloom.
As always, you did a phenomenal job of restoration. I love watching your videos, they're super relaxing and very satisfying, both at the same time. Am I the only one who was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see water coming out of the firehose? It genuinely looked like it might be a working hose! Anyway, there's more of your videos to watch, good job!

Tonka trucks from this era were so incredibly detailed and complex. Best toy truck on the market.
And expensive.
And real metal. Not like these high grade plastic trucks that's in the stores now
This was more complicated than it looked at first. thank you for such an interesting rebuild. God bless.
The beauty of these restorations is that there is no spray paint used. Everything is polished, cleaned, replaced, if needed. It’s so incredibly proper!
I admit, the sheep are my favorite part. Especially the cyclops sheep. Hope they are all ok. Hugs to the kitty.
