DIY Springs... Make Your Own Springs at Home!

  • In the video on DIY springs, I show you how to make your own springs at home. This process will work best on small mechanical springs, and they can be any length.
    If you're interested in making springs at home, I show you how by using 1/8" mild steel rod. You will need a very long length of material, and a lot of space.
    If you are making a compression spring, make your wraps a bit further apart. If you are making an extension spring you make your wraps more together.
    You can make your own basic springs without a springs making machine. Winding springs from steel is done cold.
    This blacksmith tips and tricks video is created by me, Roy Adams, here at Christ Centered Ironworks. I have tons of other blacksmithing videos at my channel... / christcenteredironworks
    I have videos on everything from blacksmith tips and tricks to complete forging tutorials, and even power hammer builds.
    If you are interested on making springs on the lathe, you can check out a video by TH-cam creator This Old Tony: • Making Springs At Home .

    always put a return spring on a clutch fork. This is a good tutorial

    TH-cam is superb for stuff like this. I've been trying to find a replacement spring for a 100-year-old machine. It's not a critical component (only needs something like mild steel) and could probably be fashioned from a part for a modern machine. After spending hours searching online for something suitable, it dawned on me that I could possibly make my own. We were taught a lot of this sort of stuff at school back in the 1970s but not about making springs (I have vague recollections of annealing, etc, but it was a LONG time ago). The irony is that my father was a metallurgist and very little of his craft ever rubbed off on me, and sadly he died 30 years ago, so I can't ask him.

    I thought this video was superb, I never knew you could actually use Mild Steel for a spring. What an eye opener. Cheers Roy

      Your supposed to use music wire, mild still will just bend with the pressure.

      @Bob Before you call some true craftsmen wankers show us YOUR skills. Roy is a superb blacksmith and demonstrates a lot of skills that educate us all..My guess is you can't even knock a nail in let alone use a hammer to create anything

      @Bob He has never paid or offered to pay me or anyone else anything. I notice you don't even have a single video on your channel so show us your skills before you belittle anyone else. If anyone is a wanker i'm sure it's you

    Just wanted to point out, you could have just slipped the wire off the mandrill and rotated it and put it back on instead of repeatedly opening the vise over and over. Reminded me of when I was 12 years old and we were boiling clams on a camp stove and the wind was blowing. My super educated structural engineer brother-in-law lifted one end of the massive 8ft picnic table and gestured for me to take the other side to lift and turn the table 180 degrees out of the wind. I just reached over and turned the stove with my finger tip. The look on his face was priceless. Work smarter not harder.

    Very good video.. I have a very small project I'm doing at home. I know how to make the springs, but you didn't tell the temp for heat treating at home. Probably not possible from my gas cooking stove.😮 At work we had a Hosfeld Bender that could bend up to 3" material. All of our work had to be sent out. So to me, spring steel, goes back to its original spring shape. Thanks

Pretty cool that he saw my love of things he shared with me. There's alot of good blacksmith TH-camr's out there but these folks are doing something special...share with all you can!

    Thank you!!! Question, though; I'm making a torsion spring for an airsoft replica. I'll be using thin gauge wire because it is a very small, thin gauge spring. Should I be doing any sort of heat treatment on this to make sure it lasts long term?

    Good afternoon! Sorry for my ignorance, I have a question. Would this method also work with wider wires (let's say 6,5 or 7mm). Another question, would you suggest using some termic process so the spring doesn't loose tension with time? Cheers!

    Hey man.. do you have experience in scrollwork for gates and railings? Where can I get information about that? I actually got to make a set of jigs for scrollforming.. can you help me?

      +Arthur Henrique I do have quite a bit of experience with scrollwork as for Gates and railings I've done very few. Mainly I have use Scrolls in other ornamental projects IE sculptural work. I'm a try to do a video in the next couple weeks on Scrolls I do have a few on the channel already though. Thank you for the great comment God bless you and thank you for watching

    To keep/hold it's shape u don't need to heat and quench?

    • @ChristCenteredIronworks
      @ChristCenteredIronworks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Will M. Thanks for the great question! The very fact of it being a spring is to mean that it wants to return to its original shape so when you bend it cold you stretch the fibers which makes it want to snapback. If this was heated and wrapped it would not have the same spring function as the fibers would be stretched and then eased. Hope this helps thanks for watching

      Christ Centered Ironworks I'd love to see a cold bent vs. heat/quench spring to see the difference in the why cold bent question. Thanks for the awesome vids man! I love how you go over basic blacksmithing and metal work for us noobs.

    • @BigWillSD
      @BigWillSD 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Christ Centered Ironworks I was moreso speaking of heating and quenching after it's shaped. I guess what I'm asking is with out doing that what keeps it from "unbending" cold just as u bent it around the round jig?

    I know it's dark, but I need to learn to make springs and spring steel for the armor I wanna make and can hopefully (yet doubtfully) have it done before the pending war. I'm trying to make a heavy full suit of layered steel armor like Damascus steel plates with graphene in between. It needs a spring system and pulley system to make it more maneuverable.

  • @happymonk4323
    @happymonk4323 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    why not you weld T croos on that pipe jig ,vise it vertically....
    and no need to unlock that vise so many times 😅
    that is not spring yet...
    you need to harden the steel to make it spring.

    Why are you opening and closing the vise? Each step is 180 degrees, yes? And the wire is loose, just slide it off and turn the wire over. ... to quote Dallas: Your wasting so much time doing it the way you are. Me watching this was giving me a panic attack lol.
