    Athar makes it look so easy, but I'm sure it's not. I signed up for a marble carving symposium this summer. I've never sculpted before. I'm interested in ancient Roman style of sculpting. The human figure is too advanced for me, but I am interested in sculptural relief and architectural enrichment like egg-and-dart and acanthus.

      @@bosatsu76 So it was a great experience for me. I did not finish my project but I learned quite a lot for a first time project. There were many sculptors there in various stages of ability and also many instructors who were much better than us. I am glad that I went and I have new ideas for future projects. :) Colorado Yule marble seemed really challenging to me. It is a beautiful marble.

      During my 15 year career as a teacher, I've seen students of varying levels carving it in between 40 and 80 hours. This in a relatively soft limestone. An expert carver would do it in approximatively 20 hours, in marble.

    I'm interested in doing this course but am wondering if I could use granite. It is my native stone. Also I'm in the US, could I still get the castings sent to me here.

    • @AtharJaber
      @AtharJaber  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure you could do it in granite, but it's terribly hard. Much harder than marble and I'm not sure if the detailing would be possible. Do you have previous experience in carving? The casts can be definitely shipped, the majority of my online students are in North America.

    • @richardburbank7830
      @richardburbank7830 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @AtharJaber I don't have stone carving experience but I do with wood carving. I'm learning granite shaping and splitting with feather and wedges. I realize marble is the stone most commonly studied but it is not my local. I have gniess or granite and seek to study carving my local stone. I know sculpture in granite is a different technique. I am looking for a teacher. I'm building with stone, non mortared walls, etc

    Do you think someone with Aphantasia could learn to carve figures and faces and hands and animals well? I am assuming that carvers have a good mind's eye and can 'see' the object inside the stone.
