Hi Jarl! We are on the edge of our seats and eagerly awaiting your winter videos. What an incredibly educational video, it's always a bit of a hassle with summer and winter equipment. @@NorwegianXplorer it’s a standard mechanical relay but different in that it has some more smarts in it. You will see a connector with wires from each glow plug going into it. You can disconnect it and test the glow plug resistance on each cylinder individually to make sure they are the same. If they check out then the likely issue is this glow plug timer relay itself. I guess the thing is unfortunately these days a new part does not mean necessarily a working part.
One of the big issues we find in cold weather (nothing like your temperatures of course) is condensation building up inside especially in the cab area. We need to get fresh air in somewhere but when it’s cold that’s a problem. We have a maxxfan in the bedroom area to take air out which helps move air but guess it’s about more insulation.

The Glow Plug Fault Light Mystery If you’ve encountered the glow plug fault light in a Fiat Ducato campervan, you’ve likely come face-to-face with a nasty little electrical gremlin. I have had to repair this issue on many campervans. Your Fiat Ducato has multiple earth straps (ground cables) that keep the electrical system stable. The primary earth strap connects the engine/gearbox to the chassis, which is essential for starting and charging. Another key strap, the accessory ground, is located under the bonnet, just below the windscreen. This sneaky strap often becomes the troublemaker. Here’s the gist: while the glow plugs ground directly through the engine, communication between sensors, the glow plug controller, and the ECU grounds through the body. When this body ground weakens, the ECU starts receiving faulty signals, triggering the dreaded glow plug fault light. A Solution That Works: Secure the Body Ground In almost all cases, this pesky gremlin is due to a grounding issue with the body ground. The main solution? Inspect, clean, tighten, and apply dielectric grease to the accessory ground strap under the bonnet. This simple step can greatly improve grounding stability and prevent the fault light from triggering. Extra Peace of Mind: Adding a Universal Braided Ground Strap For additional assurance, adding a new universal braided ground strap from an engine bracket to the body can create a more stable connection. This extra body ground is especially helpful for diesel engines, where the ECU mainly monitors engine temperature and glow plugs, making solid ground crucial to keeping things running smoothly. Don’t Blame the Relay Most mechanics start by suspecting a faulty relay, following the usual diagnostic flowchart. This often leads to repeated relay replacements or, worse, replacing glow plugs and ECU parts-never realizing the true culprit is a grounding issue. Hope this helps you out, Happy Adventuring!
Thank you for this, they are changing the glow plugs today, they where faulty now and showed 160ohm?!? Resistance. I don’t know if that is the correct therm or if that is what they said but does that sound about right? I will screenshot this comment and take care to check on these things if it persists, or I might come over to your part of the world and have you check it for me😂 I am guessing you are in UK?
@@NorwegianXplorer When a glow plug is tested off the vehicle and shows high resistance, it typically indicates a faulty plug. However, when tested on the vehicle, a weak body ground can introduce additional resistance in the circuit, creating the appearance of a glow plug issue when the real problem is poor grounding. This can easily lead to misdiagnoses of glow plug faults, or even the entire set, as the added resistance affects circuit readings. Verifying the ground connection is essential to avoid such misinterpretations. Ground cables and their connections are susceptible to corrosion at the terminal and mounting points, wire stretch from factory-applied zip ties, and vibration from diesel engines, all of which can compromise grounding over time. Grounding issues can be identified by measuring resistance values between the truck cab and the frame and between the frame and the engine. Anything over 0.3 ohms indicates a potential grounding problem that may cause circuit issues. Another symptom of weak body ground can be intermittent and odd behavior from some of the dash gauges. I'm in the USA long drive:)
@@NorwegianXplorer Sorry, I didn't answer your question! Resistance is a measure of how much a component or circuit opposes the flow of electric current. Think of it like water flowing through a pipe: if the pipe is narrow or blocked, less water can flow through it. In electrical terms, resistance works the same way. For glow plugs, which are designed to heat up quickly to help start the engine, they need a low resistance (typically around 1-2 ohms) to allow sufficient current to flow. If there’s high resistance (like 160 ohms), it’s like having a very narrow pipe-the current can’t flow as it should, and the glow plug won’t heat up properly. This high resistance could be due to a faulty glow plug, poor grounding, or other connection issues in the circuit. Campervans often have weak grounding, especially in the 'Jesus Chrysler' family of campervans, including Fiat models, due to how their assembly lines install the body grounds. One simple solution is to add a universal ground. It’s really easy to do, can prevent electrical issues in the future, and you can even make the cable yourself! I’ll be here all week-don’t forget to tip your waitress! :)
planning ahead is important 👍 im a bit slow this week. falling on my back taking down that tree 🎄 well the saying goes.. " if it is to be its up to me" lol. winter sure is coming. cant believe thanksgiving & christmas is not far off. i hope you have a good safe winter 🙏💒 im curious what those glow plugs problem are caused by?
Hi Jarl, has the problem with glow plugs not been solved yet? I'm very curious if it is anything like what I indicated. Nice to see how you are preparing for the winter tour. Greetings from the Netherlands
Hey John, it is not fixed yet, I am hoping they can get to the bottom of it this time, but I do not really trust the mechanics in Norway, they are all closed off behind the counter so can not talk to them. I might need to meet up and learn a few tricks from you next summer

If you’ve encountered the glow plug fault light in a Fiat Ducato campervan, you’ve likely come face-to-face with a nasty little electrical gremlin.
A Solution That Works: Secure the Body Ground
In almost all cases, this pesky gremlin is due to a grounding issue with the body ground. The main solution? Inspect, clean, tighten, and apply dielectric grease to the accessory ground strap under the bonnet. This simple step can greatly improve grounding stability and prevent the fault light from triggering.
Extra Peace of Mind: Adding a Universal Braided Ground Strap
For additional assurance, adding a new universal braided ground strap from an engine bracket to the body can create a more stable connection. This extra body ground is especially helpful for diesel engines, where the ECU mainly monitors engine temperature and glow plugs, making solid ground crucial to keeping things running smoothly.
Don’t Blame the Relay
Most mechanics start by suspecting a faulty relay, following the usual diagnostic flowchart.
Haha, indeed, but very very good explanation, thank you so much!
Amazing explanation, thank you!
planning ahead is important 👍
im a bit slow this week. falling on my back taking down that tree 🎄 well the saying goes.. " if it is to be its up to me" lol.
winter sure is coming. cant believe thanksgiving & christmas is not far off. i hope you have a good safe winter 🙏💒
im curious what those glow plugs problem are caused by?
Get well soon my friend
This is my fave video from you... getting ready for WAR!!!
Right ON!
Haha, indeed!
Hi Jarl, has the problem with glow plugs not been solved yet? I'm very curious if it is anything like what I indicated. Nice to see how you are preparing for the winter tour. Greetings from the Netherlands
Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
Hey John, it is not fixed yet, I am hoping they can get to the bottom of it this time, but I do not really trust the mechanics in Norway, they are all closed off behind the counter so can not talk to them. I might need to meet up and learn a few tricks from you next summer
@@NorwegianXplorer Next year we will go north for 3 weeks from the 2nd week of June. We are going to Norway via Sweden and want to ride the Aursjøvegen and Peer Gynt Vegen and hike in Jotunheimen and perhaps to the artic.
@@Johnvanlife Sounds nice, I will be out there somewhere as well, first weeks of June are usually in Femundsmarka
looking forward to your winter video .. but please keep the video's down to arond 30 mins each time .. cheers mate
Thanks for watching, the videos will be long
Vidéo toujours autant intéressante❤
Petite question, quel est le couple de serrage en Nm des roues du Ducato (je possède un Ducato sunlight 5.41)?
Super le truc avec l'antigel dans les WC 👍
I am not sure, it had such a big range when I read about it, like 80-120nm, I ended up going for 112nm
Thank you my friend 🤗
