  • The Magic of Translucent and Transparent Mark Making in Mixed Media Collage - Medical Exam Table Paper
Today, we are going to make magic by creating translucent and transparent mark-making papers, and we'll use some surprising papers (like medical exam table paper!)
Having a stash of marks that will melt into your art pieces is vital to elevating your art and adding surprise elements organically.
Not only will we create marks on paper, but I will also share my system to know exactly how translucent or transparent a paper will be BEFORE I use it.
And I’ll also show you how these papers work when put to the test by creating a collage with them in my art sketchbook.
It’s a lot today, but I promise - you will learn things that will change how you approach your creativity. It really is magical. medical exam table paper

⭐Best Viewing Experience for YOU ⭐
Every creative person has different needs. Here are the different ways to enjoy these videos.
    - Some enjoy hearing me explain my process. If that’s you, make sure your volume is on.
Others prefer to read my process through the closed-caption subtitles. If that’s you, turn on the CC at the bottom right of the video.
    - Some don’t want to hear my voice at all (that’s ok 😀). If that’s you, turn the volume off and watch.
I have had every video electronically translated through close captioned subtitles into 17 different languages to be able to reach and connect with as many people as possible. If your language is not represented, please let me know.

I really hope that this video opens up new ideas for your artwork. I just watched and realized that there was an audio problem midway through that I didn't catch during the edit. I'm so sorry about that. Please, if you have any questions ask them here. 🥰

You didn't sum up after the actual collage..... did you still have the same conclusions regarding which papers were more translucent?

Very excited! Thank you again!

I did my own board a couple of days ago with the various types of paper I use and it will be a valuable reference. I had done a similar experiment before following instructions from the artist Sally Hirst but that was to make loose strips (peeled off when dry to compare transparency/translucency).

I did two side by side one wet and the other not and got the same results, the dry one was only translucent. I just wanted to thank you again for all the work you put in this experiment, I think the result is a game changer. I never really liked the look of the translucent. This is great!!! I also found two rolls 14" x 225' for 16$, I'm not sure if the 225' is per roll or combined though. Either way, it's a lot of paper for the price. And, I used it on my gelli plate and it pulls of nicely! IT'S A WIN WIN!! Thanks again!!! OHH I almost forgot, I applied the paint to the side that has a little texture on it. Hi Liz! Yes, the collage was placed in an old cookbook and I love using it for that purpose. I used to collect cookbooks - I had a couple hundred! When I started to simplify it was time to release them. Unfortunately, libraries really don't want old and obscure cookbooks. I was able to give away many, but the rest I saved for "sketchbooks" this way the don't end up in a landfill (at least not for a long time). The pages of this cookbook are thick and satin-y. A perfect substrate to play on. I highly encourage it. As for the papers you haven't tried yet, be prepared to fall in love with them 🥰

@@betsyellis9883 Thanks for sharing, Betsy. I think I misunderstood your first question. I thought you were referring to how the mediums work for translucent and transparent papers. A good rule of thumb is to coat collage pieces with Gloss Medium to retain clarity and then go over them with matte medium later if you don't want them shiny. Does that help?

Hi Judy! No, the butcher paper that I use has a poly coating on one side. It's supposed to prevent freezer burn for food, but I use it because acrylic-painted papers peel right off it easily. Deli paper tends to be much smaller and thinner. You can find it waxed and unwaxed. I use unwaxed. 🥰
