I just dislike the dilution of the mtg IP. I like most of the IPs that were made into universe beyond sets and still dont like to have them in the game if they dont fit. Dr Who is the main one here but warhammer just HAD to use their "protected" races for creature types so reprints in universe are close to impossible.
I don't mind most of these UB cards, hunters bow, or Helios one for example just look like magic cards, what I don't like about UB is the random stuff like Battle Bus from fortnite, Optimus Prime, Spiderman, you can't get try to suspend your disbelief with those cards, I wish they would come out with a universes within card so I can play with the card without seeing one of the Doctor Who doctors

Honestly, a lot of magic cards are just generic fantasy creatures, that don't hold any special unique MTG affinity. I never felt that the magic IP was that strong anyway. From what iv seen alot of the universis beyond sets are needed and wanted reprints just with themed arts, fair enough there are some sets that have unique mechanics etc and theamed cards but that's what makes those IP unique.
I think that with the massive variety in aesthetic the "normal" cards have, there is really no valid argument against Universes Beyond cards. We get why l.o.t.r. got a pass but many of the mech like vehicles in neon dynasty don't fit with middle Earth or phyrexia etc. plus the magic universe is already a Multiverse. Warhammer 40 K lore already has dimensional travel and Tardis station time travel. If someone wants to dig their heels that's their business but I think it makes the game more fun tbh
I generally feel the same way. Trust me, I like Magic's original lore (if in a bit of a love-hate way), and I love the aesthetics of truly original planes like Ravnica or Phyrexia. That said, I care much more about the game as a game - if a card is interesting and fun to use, I don't care what IP it's attached to, I'll play it.

really strong cards that would be great in my decks being stuck in UB where i strongly disapprove of the artistic and business choices being made is pretty much the entire problem, actually.
Forgotten Realms was awful in particular because it was so gimmicky. They could have just made a set based on the setting on a flavor level, instead they tried to hack in D&D *mechanics* and it just struck me as really cheesy, forced, and awkward. The "Dungeon" mechanic was as confusing as it was annoying. They then followed that up with Lord of the Rings, an IP that does not need even more shameless pandering merchandise (In fact it's reasonable to assume that its creator would find the notion patently repulsive) and Universes Beyond lost me forever. At this point, my aversion has nothing at all to do with the mechanics themselves or how the sets are implemented and everything to do with those two sets defining the entire concept for me- A combination of shameless pandering and hacky gimmicks. Duskmourn could have been so cool but the 80s aesthetic and tropes are killing it for me. Will probably avoid buying it just like I do with UB now.
Idk that Bloomburrow could fit any definition of “high fantasy.” And like… do people also not like the Weatherlight Saga? That’s basically The Avengers.

@@SarumanTheStupidI was simply stating a fact. Here's another one: Universes Beyond will not stop, as there's always another IP. Perhaps consider what kind of game that would create and if you believe it would still resemble MTG at that point. Anyway, if that sounds good to you (or whoever reads this), then by all means, enjoy making Hasbro money with their greedy cashgrabs, as they slowly butcher the goose that laid the golden eggs.
Whether people agree with it or not they need to put on their big boy pants and get over it. Its bringing people into the game, its NOT going away, and throwing a tantrum saying, "I'm not playing in a game where people are using UB cards!" Only makes you look like a baby. Im not a fan of the UB stuff myself, yeah it feels weird seeing it in a game because it doesn't really fit the feel of MtG... but you know what? People are having fun and you dont have the right to take that away from them because you disagree with the flavour of their fun. Grow up
Hey, guess what Refusing to play with you isn't taking your fun away except insofar as you're demanding that they supply your fun, which you also have zero right to do. I don't even refuse to play against UB (Despite hating UB myself) but combining a patently hypocritical argument with a petulant demand to "grow up" is peak irony.
@Merlewhitefire Nothing in my comment was hypocritical. I never said I refuse to play against them, just said the flavor feels off and takes some of the immersion out. But planeswalkers could end up anywhere so you could shoe horn the lore if you had to. The refusing to play wasn't what I was referring to about taking away fun. It's people shitting on what people enjoy and saying it... doesn't.... belong. Wait... I see it now... shit! Ok, I need to sit and think for a bit. I guess I owe you a thanks for pointing out my inconsistencies.
I understand that people want more medieval fantasy sets rather than things like UB or thunder junction, but I think this is a good thing to attract new players, kids these days are not really big into medieval fantasy and personally I think UB works great as a playground for new card designs or for new additions to some mechanics that are not really for standard or modern, I personally got back into magic because of the doctor who decks and the amount of interesting mechanics that each commander has
While I'm not a huge fan of certain IPs being used in the Universes beyond sets or as sub themes in sets (Jurassic Park, Transformers, Doctor Who, Fallout and to a much lesser degree Warhammer 40k) because they don't "fit" thematically, that MY problem to deal with or get past, and not those that enjoy them. While I may hate seeing a Megatron suddenly plop down on the table amongst other creatures, I also hate bunnies in cowboy hates, or criminal investigators with magnifying glasses, or a Tardis. It's all diluting my sense of immersion with the "world" that MTG has built to this point, but it's not my place to stop others from doing so. I also hate Craterhoof Behemoth because it typically ends games with no real strategy required, or those huge Eldrazi with annihilator printed on them, but thematically they "fit," so if I hate those cards but am okay with them being played, why would I insist the UB cards not be allowed? All in all, MTG is for people to have fun. While inclusion of a plethora of those cards might detract from my immersion, why should I let it detract from my fun? For me, it's more about the deck creativity, the uniqueness of how a game plays out, and the cameraderie shared playing a phenomenal game. I DO wish power creep would slow the heck down though, and the overwhelming amount of new product would also slow down, because I think those are diluting or wrecking the game so much more than UB themes being included. Also, I really do wish that WotC would include more under utilized mechanics into sets, even if it's only one or two cards per set occasionally. Foretell was released in Kaldheim and Commander Legends, Baldur's Gate, but has only seen any additional foretell cards in......sigh, UB, Doctor Who, which is very disappointing. 1 or 2 cards per set since CLB or KLD would have equalled dozens of foretell cards added to the game since then, and this mechanic really needs revisiting. Of the 53 "foretell cards," I think there are only 5 green and only slightly more red or black ones. I'm lucky in that they made white and blue more numerous since they did a spirit precon with Ranar, the Ever Watchful at the helm, but come on WotC, my Ranar deck has become stagnant on changes with the release of so few spirit cards or especially foretell cards. Hook me up with some more please. Lol. maybe if there was some sort of UB set that was based on some sort of game with omens, or visions of the future, then WotC might revisit this.
The problem I have is that I can't be happily immersed if the flavor doesn't suit my taste. In many cases this is not the same game I have played since 96
Of course, even if I hate the set overall, it will always have a few cards that I actually like. In my case, that makes me sad. For instance, I think The Wise Mothman could be a spectacular commander but, being from Fallout, I don't see me building a deck about it any time soon. I mean, I'd probably end up building it sooner or later but, had it come from a regular set, it would have been already done. Also, one of the problems I have with Universes Beyond is that it "steels" quality for regular sets (WotC only has so many resources per year to put into sets). In fact, there are many regular sets that I hate more than Universes Beyond (Ikoria, Thunder Junction, Dominaria United etc.)
the fallout UB is quite possibly the worst execution of a UB ive ever seen. every single precon did not follow the flavor of the commanders that they came with. like if you picked up the Caesars legion precon, it had brotherhood of steel cards with cards from the New california republic fighting alongside cards from the east coast from 30 years prior in the fallout universe. IN A PRECON. why couldnt they make them follow the theme of the deck. itd be like having a sliver deck with splashed in old phyrexia cards with edgar markov in the command zone.
Honestly, I'd like it if they released another Warhammer set, just with altered reprints of existing cards, to add more options for the decks to feel thematical.
It’s nitpicky, but I don’t think Scholar of New Horizons works as well with Regeneration Restored. I’m pretty sure that the life gain a scry trigger would resolve BEFORE you search for the land.
@@rraimundobruno No, removing the counter is part of the activation cost. So you would put the search ability on the stack, but then the Regeneration Restored trigger would happen, so you would gain 1 life and scry before searching.
The flavor of the Doctor Who cards were so insanely good. The Adipose card in particular; if you don't know, they're creatures that are formed from the fat of a host body, then when they are ready to 'Emerge', the host body turns into multiple of these creatures. Absolute flavor win haha!
It's irrelevant whether you "care about rad counters", if you put Screeching Scorchbeast in your deck you'll be forcing your opponents to care about rad counters. You should at least have a Rule 0 discussion to inform them that you're injecting Fallout rules into the game.
Are you for real? You actually expect people to have a pregame discussion that they are running a card that does Rad counters? Do I have to disclose that I'm running cards with Monarch? Because then that's something my opponent didn't bring into their own deck.
@@craig1287 Monarch was introduced in 2016 and has been used in multiple Commander sets since. Rad counters are a Fallout-specific mechanic that imposes unexpected bookeeping chores on your opponents. It's common courtesy to give your opponents a heads-up on your deck's offensive angles instead of ambushing them with a potentially unwelcome surprize.
@@QuicksilverSG "unexpected bookkeeping chores" I still think you're trolling or memeing. So are cards like Mesmeric Orb and Mind Crank more unexpected bookkeeping chores that I have to alert my opponents to in a pregame talk?
Grow up
Hey, guess what
Refusing to play with you isn't taking your fun away except insofar as you're demanding that they supply your fun, which you also have zero right to do.
Algo 100
The only Universes Beyond set I universally hate are the Transformers cards. They look stupid, I dont think Id ever run one no matter how good it was.
Yeah design is great, but UB will always be a flavor loss in my opinion.
Also a licensing loss, since these contracts will make some of these reprints in the future practically impossible.
Lotr doesn't count in my mind lol
The Pandorica from Doctor Who is awesome.
Honestly, I'd like it if they released another Warhammer set, just with altered reprints of existing cards, to add more options for the decks to feel thematical.
UB gives designers so much freedom to come up with new mechanics based on various fictional universes, I appreciate that IMMENSELY
Warhammer cards are highly superior
It’s nitpicky, but I don’t think Scholar of New Horizons works as well with Regeneration Restored. I’m pretty sure that the life gain a scry trigger would resolve BEFORE you search for the land.
Even that its a lot of lands you can potentially get
Shouldn't the counter removal and search happen simultaneously?
@@rraimundobruno No, removing the counter is part of the activation cost. So you would put the search ability on the stack, but then the Regeneration Restored trigger would happen, so you would gain 1 life and scry before searching.
The flavor of the Doctor Who cards were so insanely good. The Adipose card in particular; if you don't know, they're creatures that are formed from the fat of a host body, then when they are ready to 'Emerge', the host body turns into multiple of these creatures. Absolute flavor win haha!
Your opinion encapsulates everything that's wrong with MTG.
You make it sound like rad counters are some massive shift in gameplay that will take someone so many minutes to grasp the concept and also carry out the game actions. It's like any other thing in the game that adds an "on each players upkeep...".
