I love how the probable defects are pointed out and even approximate costs for the repairs! Nobody does this like Jonny Smith.
He's a good reviewer but I think part of that is the audience he aims at. There a few motoring journos that started well but have now just gotten stupid.
Chief among those are any members of the Top Gear trio, (you know the ones........), then the clown that only drags the cars and points at fake exhausts with a stick.
BUT............if that is what the audience demands I give them some slack, (but not a lot).
Makes sense this was in 2013, good luck trying to find a W210 E55 for that price these days. Good examples are now fetching $40K USD!
Yeah we can pick them up cheap over in the uk I think maybe different now would be good to see
@@jackdavies5271 Finding one would be a challenge, these were soluble in water, complex and parts are extremely expensive so most will have been thrown away long ago.
Believe it or not, less than a yr ago I found a 1 owner (Doctor w/ lifetime service documents) w210 E55 for $2,500! Garaged it's entire life (allegedly, did look it). Although 250k mi on the clock if I remember correctly, it was damn tempting.
Certainly don't expect to see one like that again
@@RothBeyondTheGrave There are some bargains that pop up in New Zealand now and again too but getting far and few between now. Prices are creeping up here too!

When I was buying a R129 SL my dad said "theres nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes" 🤣 so true, put me off.

Expensive Land Rover costs more to run than cheap Merc, in my experience. And a cheap Land Rover, dread to think!
Depends well maintained shop book with dates etc tells u the true story. My rule no maintance record not going to look at it
I have owned a 2005 C55 AMG for the last few years and it has been a Great Car for the money. Nearly no problems and yet it is my daily driver. I Highly recommend it.
Those C55's are the real hidden gems. True sleeper in that perfect sized (imo) chassis. My sister has a W203 C230 sport which I believe shares brakes & a few suspension bits with your car?
Although she just has the 2.5L M272, I always loved the feel of that chassis. Couldn't imagine how great it is with an M113 under there
@Glenn Parks i just bought one a month ago…love the car, but it has a lifter noise on one bank, any suggestions would be appreciated
@@brrrr16 Bank 1 perhaps? (Passenger side). Just speculating here...my 3.5L m272 (along with tons of other m272 owners) has some valve clatter/lifter noise for lack of better term on bank 1. Sometimes loud, sometimes quiet.
Many have attempted to properly diagnose, using borescopes & the like & have gotten no where in most cases. Mercedes claimed, "piston slap replace engine" & I once had someone tell me their m272 made it to 350k mi with that "piston slap".
Different engines of course, but the M113 is known to be one of the most trouble free engines in a Mercedes. Some have also thought the cam magnets (not sensors) cleared this up, but again seemingly chasing ghosts.
I'm sure you'll find talk of it on the forums & I hope it's as benign as the m272's mystery clatter.
@@RothBeyondTheGrave thank you for the response. Its bank1, compression is ok, but it looses a bit of oil pressure when gets warm. This is as far as we got in diagnosing this week

I have an early cl600 v12 it’s position crank sensor failed recently but that’s it and I love it 👍
I got an SL55 AMG abou 8 months ago. Its been a dream car since I first saw one back in 2005. I love it!!
All M113’s. All extremely reliable engines. Replace the conductor plate on the transmission and they are pretty much bulletproof. SL55 adds the ABC suspension cost, but that’s well worth it as ABC is one of the best suspensions in the world.
Correct. The M113 is absolutely solid (we have it in my R129).
I wouldn’t say the ABC is that much of a cost sure it’s £1,000 to replace but there are companies that refurb them using better parts for around £350 so I’ve seen and heard.
Definitely worth that cost to have ABC!
@@adamkightley abc is about £1,000 per strut tho, that includes one of them, the car has 4, and they don't include stuff like Valve Bodies, the hydraulic pump etc.
ABC is one of those things you should avoid...
@@jkarra2334 only if you’re uneducated on the system. It’s actually a pretty straightforward and reliable system… people just think it’s complicated due to the expense.
@@ic1815 there is no easy way out when refurbishing ABC system, if you do it reasonable good you will spend money.
A lot of money.
If your budget is around 5k, you can’t afford an amg. There’s no shame in that. There is shame in dropping a large portion of your savings on a 20 yo beat up car that’ll wear out in months, not years.
Make sure to chek if that 100 Quid part is good. What a load of bollocks... xD

no way those are veey durable they can last 20 more years for sure they already has lasted that long a new car there is no way that it will last long so it's worth to buy those instead of new & bonus benefit in this you can buy cheaper spare parts unlike in new ones they will he expensive + wait for imports

4:25 Adjusted for inflation, £15,000 in 2013 is now about £20,150 as of February 2024. At this time of writing, I saw adverts for R230 SL55 AMG here in Malaysia selling between £20,000 to £42,000.
I used to own a (quite rare) AMG C55 Estate. I bought it with two years worth of Mercedes Top Tier warranty already in place and pre-paid. It was a phenomenal car at the time. However, I got scared that something big would go wrong and sold it BEFORE the warranty had fully expired! I knew a Mercedes Independent mechanic would had a C55 himself and the gearbox developed some fault that cost him £5k for a new ‘box…and that was doing all the work himself.
Don’t be fooled! As they say: “The entrance ticket at the door of the club maybe cheap…but it’s the price of drinks at the bar where they sting you!”
You didn’t change the conductor plate, or else it would have been a forever no prob engine and trans.

Them there amg mercs are fantastic, but they will break your heart , as for the newer ones forget it, there unlikely to last near as long 😱

Probably because they’re only just creeping below 15k for a ropey drug dealer owned car, and still depreciating. Whereas you could argue the older AMGs are settling down price wise.

Prices of the v8's are going to shoot up after the announcement of the 4 cylinder in the AMG LINEUP
Why would you leave out the s55.
My daily driver has been nothing but smiles.
Replacement of loaded struts is about 1500 one time deal.
Only complaint is I have to fill up $20 every 3 days. Heavy right foot
All of you talk about the cost of maintenance, the first 2 cars are NA M113 engine with conventional shocks and springs which does not require as much maintenance needed compared to the higher end 55 or 65 AMG with air suspension or ABC suspension. I track my CLK55 and haven't had any issues yet. You just need to know which AMG would require your savings to maintain. I know because I have a S55 AMG as well and it is never trouble free.
Or just get a non-AMG with M113 power. CLK430 for instance. Take the muffler off, leave the cats on, loadsa V8 rumble for not much cash.
Might I ask which CLK 55 model you have? W208 or W209?

Really class .....too beautiful choice .....S class amg w220 or w215 .... even not amg are the more collectible for limited budget..and more easy to maintain than modern (2012/2015) E class ..’..
At least you won’t have to replace the con rod bearings as in a M3 e92 V8 or M5 e60 V10 now that is real bad !

If you nickel and dime on car repairs, you can't afford it, so just avoid it.
sometimes you have to, some of these repairs or maintenece items can be high. Its best to shop around sometimes
in Germany W210 E55 AMG costs about €12.000 - €15.000. 3-4 times more than E55 in UK...
All three amg cars good looking but the second cars and third cars had same manufactured years

Itt all very well buying a cheap expensive car. But you've got to run it. That front number plate is illegal. As chummy has pointed out, older Mercs rust like old Vauxhalls.

For real, I have a w202 c43 amg and pay £800 for the insurance and when I got my w210 e55 the insurance quote was £1400. In terms of fuel costs the c43 has always been reasonable so I though getting the e55 wouldn't be much of an increase but boy was I wrong, that thing drinks fuel at a horrifyingly quick rate.....I recommend taking everyday running costs into serious consideration to anyone thinking of buying one don't get sucked into the idea of owning a car like these because you can buy them at a relatively low price, its stings you afterwards
@@ahmedjabbar7467 I recommend not looking at the MPG and just topping up the fuel when it's low. :D Ran a CLK55 for a couple of years and just drove it without looking at how much it was costing me... safer for my sanity!
@@darrensurrey I hear you loud and clear. I guess my biggest gripe is that for the same costs of fuel I could have a w211 e55 kompressor and potentially have much more fun for the same running costs which is what I'm thinking of doing

This was almost 10 years ago and the prices were correct at the time of filming. You are right probably 10k-13k for a W211 E55, 13-18k for SL55

The used car market has gone nuts... plus I think if you ever could get any of these for that price I would suggest keeping that much again free for repairs.

Anybody who buys these on a budget is deluding themselves.. They are money pits unless you have super mechanic/electronics skills and access to parts at a good price..
I would steer well clear.
Maintenance and upkeep of these cars will cost way too much for what they are worth.

w210 E55 vs w209 CLK55, the CLK is a 'newer' car, w211 e55's are in another league.
Uninformed review on these metrics as there was no mention of engine reliability from 99 to 2006 were terrible I have owned a couple over the years

The M113 engine is also considered one of the best engines ever built by MB, particularly for its reliability. Electronics however, are a different story.

I'd take any of these over the hideous G Wagon. I really don't get the appeal of a boxy 4X4 that looked dated in the 80s and downright hilarious in 2021. The G Wagon are the wheels of choice for men trying to make up for their trouser area inadequacies.
