- In Turbulent, Neshat's 1998 two-screen video installation, two singers (Shoja Azari playing the role of the male and Iranian vocalist and composer Sussan Deyhim as the female) create a powerful musical metaphor for the complexity of gender roles and cultural power within the framework of ancient Persian music and poetry.
Just learned about this piece in my contemporary art class. What a beautiful piece
Me too! ^_^
OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS PIECE SO SO MUCH! I was extremely moved to almost tears when the woman started singing.
I saw this at a museum over 10 years ago. It's stayed with me ever since. I still think of this piece every time I'm really down.
I saw this at a museum and simply had to see it again.
+stefanos2691 ha same here, at the reina sofia, i think it was in 2006. I was alone and stayed in that room for an hour or more. So riveting and beautiful.
I must say during the 3 year working in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal, Shirin Neshat's exposition was one of the most successful and the most visited expositions I have ever seen there,
This Two channel video installation was my favorite, and I was amazed by people’s reaction, some with tears in their eyes and extremely moved and mesmerized by this video
I saw this at a V&A museum exhibition in London, in 2021. I was floored. Completely mesmerized. I deeply wish I could see the large screen version again. Very impactful.
Thankyou so much for this. I'm studying Neshat this year in my art class, and it's a lot easier to talk about this installation if I actually see it rather than just reading random people's accounts. It's a stunning piece of work.
I saw this work on my first year of bachelor’s. Since then it haunts my heart

this was so powerful to see in a room with the images on either side. a beautiful piece.
I bought some songs by Sussan Deyhim. She's brilliant.
Impressive singing! Both of them!
i love this video! i love the song! i can listen to it over and over it's so heart felt and chilling
Still one of the most poignant short films I've ever seen, and the music is so beautiful for both parts.

I know
Bellissimo , stupendo !
I cry a little everytime I watch this video
@CrimsonLove187 No that's really her voice. Some echo effects have been added. It is a form of sufi singing, common in Iran.
correction, i WAS moved to tears.
Amazing

I can't tell you how upset I am when i saw your comment, you are an Australian reading about neshat's work .I'm Iranian and I can't even think that someone in our country would ever dare to discuss neshat's works in an art class

And we should really change the narratives today..
Shoja Azari does a fantastic job of that beautiful song, but I find it interesting /funny fewer people are inquiring about the woman's name …?!
Exactly what I thought. I really wanted to know the name of the woman! She is so raw, emotive and entrancing.... Finally found her name but couldn't believe there weren't more people asking!
I thought Shirin Neshat was the singer until I read the comments so that could be why.

I trust that you speak truth about the languages used. Besides that, even without knowing the languages used, the message should be apparent, like you said.
yes nickhikl that`s unfortunately true:(
it`s a shame, we have many great artists and intellectuals(both inside and outside of Iran) which can not be discussed in schools because of our crazy government... Free Iran vvv
Olé!
Thanks for video!
Where can I find this amazing song and text translated into English? Amazingly powerful impression from his performance. And even more surprising is the fact that it's words of Rumi!
think about it hard.
think about the devide that religion in the name of culture creates!!!!!
Is the song that man sang was made specific for the video or is this a copy? And if so, what's the name if this powerful song?
All I know is that the man doesn't sing that song, someone else does, he's just doing playback. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the song or who sings it.
Selentedorre Official he is singing Rumi, a farsi poet
Shahram Nazeri - Yadegare Doost
The words are from Molavi (Rumi).
does anybody understand what the man is singing?
and please explain
The second singer, is she /really/ singing that whole thing by herself or was it digitally altered/enhanced? I'd love to find out because, that's mind-blowing if it's all her!
Crimson:
Yep, that's all her---her voice She's a composer named Sussan Dayum (I'm probably spelling her name wrong) who's worked with Neshat before. Her singing/haunting vocal stylings are what really make the film--even thought the man sings equally well.
I'm analyzing this video for class. I Love It! But, what are they singing about? And other insight would be awesome :D
What is the name of the first song?
Bedran Öndeş yadegare doost - shahram nazeri
+quentincompsonify THANK YOU, THANK YOU :')
but but but... whY
Some real sound issues in evidence with the electronic backing equipment. That Persian woman's 'performance' is pretty disconcerting and discombobulating.
that may or may not have been part of the intent with this performance piece.
No thumbs up, Only here for good music and Ideas. Try next time...
