  • In Turbulent, Neshat's 1998 two-screen video installation, two singers (Shoja Azari playing the role of the male and Iranian vocalist and composer Sussan Deyhim as the female) create a powerful musical metaphor for the complexity of gender roles and cultural power within the framework of ancient Persian music and poetry.

I saw this at a museum over 10 years ago. It's stayed with me ever since. I still think of this piece every time I'm really down.

I must say during the 3 year working in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Montreal, Shirin Neshat's exposition was one of the most successful and the most visited expositions I have ever seen there,
This Two channel video installation was my favorite, and I was amazed by people’s reaction, some with tears in their eyes and extremely moved and mesmerized by this video

I saw this at a V&A museum exhibition in London, in 2021. I was floored. Completely mesmerized. I deeply wish I could see the large screen version again. Very impactful.

Thankyou so much for this. I'm studying Neshat this year in my art class, and it's a lot easier to talk about this installation if I actually see it rather than just reading random people's accounts. It's a stunning piece of work.

@CrimsonLove187 No that's really her voice. Some echo effects have been added. It is a form of sufi singing, common in Iran.

All I know is that the man doesn't sing that song, someone else does, he's just doing playback. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the song or who sings it.

The second singer, is she /really/ singing that whole thing by herself or was it digitally altered/enhanced? I'd love to find out because, that's mind-blowing if it's all her!

      Crimson:
Yep, that's all her---her voice She's a composer named Sussan Dayum (I'm probably spelling her name wrong) who's worked with Neshat before. Her singing/haunting vocal stylings are what really make the film--even thought the man sings equally well.
