In Turbulent, Neshat's 1998 two-screen video installation, two singers (Shoja Azari playing the role of the male and Iranian vocalist and composer Sussan Deyhim as the female) create a powerful musical metaphor for the complexity of gender roles and cultural power within the framework of ancient Persian music and poetry.

    I saw this at a V&A museum exhibition in London, in 2021. I was floored. Completely mesmerized. I deeply wish I could see the large screen version again. Very impactful.

    Some real sound issues in evidence with the electronic backing equipment. That Persian woman's 'performance' is pretty disconcerting and discombobulating.

    Shoja Azari does a fantastic job of that beautiful song, but I find it interesting /funny fewer people are inquiring about the woman's name …?!

    Is the song that man sang was made specific for the video or is this a copy? And if so, what's the name if this powerful song?

    • @lilpoppo

      All I know is that the man doesn't sing that song, someone else does, he's just doing playback. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the song or who sings it.

    @CrimsonLove187 No that's really her voice. Some echo effects have been added. It is a form of sufi singing, common in Iran.

  • @CrimsonLove187
    @CrimsonLove187 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    The second singer, is she /really/ singing that whole thing by herself or was it digitally altered/enhanced? I'd love to find out because, that's mind-blowing if it's all her!

    • @alondathomas293
      @alondathomas293 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crimson: Yep, that's all her---her voice She's a composer named Sussan Dayum (I'm probably spelling her name wrong) who's worked with Neshat before. Her singing/haunting vocal stylings are what really make the film--even thought the man sings equally well.

    @Skipbeatskipper of course you're right. but the thing is, people forget to talk about NOW, what's happening today at this moment. It really is important to show the people what happend in the past, but isn't it more important to show the current situation? you can't change what happend before, but you change what's happening right now.
