Great reaction! You pretty much nailed it. The lyrics to "Shout" (1984/US#1, UK#4) were inspired by Arthur Janov's concept of Primal Therapy, more popularly known as Primal Scream Therapy. It's also where they got the name for their band, Tears for Fears - which is really the core duo of Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. They bonded over their love of synthesizers and popular psychology.
Their first album bore this out, with morose pop songs set to early Synthpop bloops and bleeps. It's quite good and has aged better than some of their later stuff, honestly. The Hurting (1983/US#73, UK#1) did poorly in the US but quite well overseas. It yielded a clutch of UK hits, including "Mad World" (1982/UK#3 - which was covered by Michael Andrews ft. Gary Jules and became a huge international hit in 2003). There was also "Change" (1983/US#73/UK#4) and "Pale Shelter" (1983/UK#5), all three Top5 hits on UK radio. There was also a minor, non-album single, "The Way You Are" (1983/UK#24) that the band has tried to distance themselves from, as the sound is a bit peppier than their usual fare and was done to please their record label.
"Shout" was a preview of the second album Songs from the Big Chair (1985/US#1, UK#2), which finally broke them out in the US. It was a huge-selling and huge-sounding album. It really exemplifies the mid-80s in so many ways. Other gigantic hits from that one include "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (1985/US#1, UK#2) and "Head over Heels" (1985/US#3, UK#12). "Mothers Talk" was a minor hit (1986/US#27, UK#14) as was "I Believe" (1985/UK#23), but the whole album plays beautifully as a seamless suite.
Their third album The Seeds of Love (1989/US#8, UK#1) was also hit big on both sides of the pond, with its title track "Sowing the Seeds of Love" (1989/US#2, UK#5) being their last worldwide smash. They had abandoned their early Synthpop "new wave" approach and their arena-ready Alternative Pop from their massive Songs from the Big Chair-era, and now they seemed intent on proving they could do whatever they pleased. The lead single was a clever Psychedelic pastiche of 1967 Beatles and then-modern politics, with lyrics that definitely sailed over my US 12-yr-old head, LOL. Follow-up single "Advice for the Yong at Heart" (1990/US#89, UK#36) saw a jazzier, "adult contemporary" Sophisti-Pop approach. "Woman in Chains" (1989/US#36, UK#26) introduced the world to the vocals of Oleta Adams, who later recorded the R&B standard "Get Here" - 1991/US#5, UK#4).
After this album, Curt (the cute one) Smith left. Partner Roland Orzabal's in-home studio had all-but left him out of the recording process on Seeds of Love, so they split for the first time in a decade. Orzabal continued with the name and had some middling success and a couple more good singles, with "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)" (1992/UK#17) and "Break It Down Again" (1993/US#25, UK#20). If nothing else, you should check out "Head over Heels", "Mad World", "Sowing the Seeds of Love", and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", though.

Yeah, The Hurting really made a huge impression on me way back then... my favourite songs were 'Pale Shelter' and 'Memories Fade'. Smith & Olarzabal were both huge Beatles fans, and John Lennon is known to have done some therapy sessions with Arthur Janov himself, around 1969/1970, and he talked about it in interviews. Lennon's song 'Mother' is another well-known Primal Scream song.

This is really a perfect song. Depending on how you play it, it's only 3 chords. The vocal hook is AMAZING. The melody hook is AMAZING. And the breaks, plus his melodic lead at the end, are AMAZING. All I can add is "Head Over Heels" is a great followup, and If you like his dancing, (plus it's a great song) "Change" off their first album is great.

I know everyone will tell you to do “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and that’s a good one, but I think you would really enjoy “Head Over Heels” for the fun video as well. I was roughly that age as well. Tears for Fears were brilliant. The 70s had the strongest impression on me, because that decade had the greatest variety of music. Music became more specialized after that, when business became more involved. I don't think it was a good thing. My mother also played classical music. I liked almost everything.

They were one of my favorite bands as a teenager. I was heartbroken when they broke up in '91. They're back together again and have put out new material but I haven't heard it yet. Shout does come from a sort of therapy; they were both going through Primal Scream therapy, which greatly influenced their first album.

I have actually seen theese 2 still active over recent years before covid, where they performed theyr 80s hits live, with a updated twist on it. One of them is quite the good guitar shredder,so they played it more rock inspired. I was surprised over how well and strong theyr voices still were,as they sort of "vanished" after the 80s. They have defintly maintained theyr talents over the years. Both me and my mom loved them while i was growing up.

Roland (vocal lead on this song) is a master songwriter. He also plays guitar. Curt (my main crush) sings lead on several songs and plays the bass.
You should check out “Mad World. Roland has a special dance in the video. Mad World was made popular in the US by another artist, but I love the original, written by Roland. It’s not so depressing.

Tears For Fears' entire discography is amazing. Believe it or not, they just put out another NEW album in 2022 - The Tipping Point. Also fantastic - look for Rivers of Mercy (for a good cry), My Demons, The Tipping Point, and Break The Man.

You need to react to more 80's music. Thompson Twins, The Outfield, Huey Lewis, Robert Palmer, etc.

one of my favorite tv shows is called Romanzo Criminale, it is in Italian but it has subtitles. There is a great scene with this song as the backing track.

Baby girl! back in the day, kids had to learn to play an instrument ...or wish they did! That's why you see some of these very young artist, playing instruments, and having these huge hits! It's because a lot of them have been at it from very young! and a lot of the parents encouraged practicing "down in the basement" or "in the garage"! God Bless!

In 1985 we did not have cable therefore no MTV etc... but we did have a show Friday Night Videos. I was in labor with my 3rd of 5 sons and "Everyone Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears came on the show, The first line in the song is "Welcome to your life" which I thought was really cool. Then, it turned out that he was the kind to want to rule the world. Unfortunately he passed away at age 32 but that song (along with so many other because we had the same taste in music), always made me think of him.

I only keep about 5 CD’s in my car and it’s always the same bands, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles White Album, The Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet, The Cars Candy’o and let’s not forget… Tears for Fears Songs From the Big Chair.
I remember hearing them for the first time thinking I need to buy that album! They were still making albums in the 80’s.. lol.
But when I hear it in it’s entirety, I realized what a awesome band this was. I never grow tired of it.

Great song. Some of the best music came out after disco ended and before techno began.

The end of video always reminds me of The Beatles, Hey Jude, with everyone crowding around the band.
