  • I am settling in well in my new work space and am trying out different weaving positions to find one that works best. This is still ongoing though!
    I also chat about self-criticism during the creative process and how to look at it as way that can be beneficial. You see me make a commissioned basket, a new sculpture and finish some skibs.

    It is so fun getting a glimpse into the world of a determined, capable and talented artist. Your space seems to be getting woven around you as you struggle in its womb to find that productive corner. I wonder if your table needs to loose a few rigid corners, or pull in a swivel round table that can easily be height adjusted. I just had a vision of very thick river willow being woven in a thick basket table for your stool and swivel table. But remember we take 9 months in a womb to outgrow it. Studios take lifetimes to consume us. It seems you have emerged now and I can't wait to see how far you will go blazing your trail. Just remember we are all cheering you and your family on! Go Get it!

      Oh bonnie, thanks for those lovely words. I also feel like I am emerging and moving into a new phase. All the working bits need time to fall into place and I am giving it time as this cannot be rushed. Much love xx

    OMG Hanna what an amazing workspace with views to die for! Thank you for your detailed videos which coupled with your determination and enthusiasm, encourage me to keep ‘having a go’ at weaving. If I ever get to visit your area I will definitely book myself on one of your workshops.
    Question. When you make those shallow trays, do you reuse the border offcuts? Just interested to know as they are long rods and it seems such a waste otherwise.
    Thanks

    • @HannaVanAelst
      @HannaVanAelst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Christine, yes keep going! And have fun too.
      I usually use off cuts from other basket borders to weave the trays. If your rods are longer and flexible enough weave them back around until they are too thin. So instead of using another rod for the next row, bend the old rod around the base circle and weave it. Hope this helps? Love H

    This is such good advice. We can all be over critical of our own work. I think it's a lovely basket and no doubt someone will immediately think of a perfect use for it, and fall in love with it.

    very true words about self critick. I think the willow decide and design too, so I can not control complet. And it is ok! It is how it is and I have to akcept it. And ofcourse I learn with each basket more and more! Thanks for this video💚

    The non-traditional basket is awesome. (Same with what I think were placemats behind you - I like the thick cut willow that end up looking like dots around the border). I was worried when I saw you take your shears to your sculpture's wall! I love the distortions in the piece. Seems like something could be done with the vertical lines. They're visually dynamic. It reminds me of a pumpkin or a basket that was sat on, which sounds funny to say. But there is a ceramics artist I heard of who would make beautiful pieces then drop them on the floor and they went all wonky. Total Fun. I like the sculpture. Makes me want to have it in my life and find a use for it

      Hi Kim, thanks for your lovely words! I feel the same about the ribs, or uprights, and feel they are such a feature and something I would like to explore more. Maybe making them thicker?

    Well done Hanna I came across you pre Covid and watched lots of your very helpful videos! So glad to see you are still going strong and enjoying your fabulous new studio, what a view😀👏love your thoughts on self criticism. I work on a low table and chair with shorter legs at the front so your basket is sloping away from you, with holes drilled into the table so I can anchor my basket in the centre once I’ve done the base and put in uprights, with a bodkin and swivel it round (Jenny Crisp works like this) I found I got no back ache or shoulder pain when I attended her one day workshop. Your work is exquisite

    There are so many cultures around the world that intentionally made mistakes in their work for whatever reason. Not being perfect is a good thing.
    There is always someone who is going to love it as is, even though the creator wishes something was slightly different. Our inner critic voice is often perfectionism popping out.
