1) Fill that tunnel besides your storage room. 2) Connect your computers with the CCTVs with wires. If that doesn't work, then you have to make security room(s). Then, you can browse through the cameras. 3a) Put a door at the workshop, ya ding-dong. Then, make them work. 3b) More workers. 4) A secondary entrance. (if the game allows you to do it) 5) Some parts of your prison are without light. (maybe I'm wrong but look at it) 6) Sell the logs, not dump them. Or wait for the workers to make better wood (planks) or even beds. Then, sell them. 7) If you still are considering in buying high level risk prisoners, I suggest to make a prison within a prison with its own entrance, generator, plumbing etc.
A bunch of tips: 1) You have no prisoners working in your workshop. To assign them, you need a door on it. You should have at least a wooden door on pretty much every room, so that you can alter the deployment status on a room by room basis. 2) CCTV works fine, you just have to hook them up (use the connect tool in utilities, click on the monitor first, then the CCTV). Each monitor can use 8 cameras at once, more than that and they'll rotate through them. Cameras do not need to be hooked up directly to cables. 3) The wood will be used up once you have prisoners working in there. BUT, if you want it used up faster, click on it and choose "sell object". Not only will it magically disappear, but you'll make loads'a money. 4) This a bit late, but metal detectors only detect metal (SURPRISE!), dogs detect drugs and other contraband. Just stick dogs on patrol routes with other guards unless you have some other plan for them. 5) Another minor thing, but all things that need to be hooked up to cables will spawn cables directly beneath them and one cable to the left. So for example, your workshop electronics, because they are in a line, only one needs to be hooked up and all the benches in that row will let the power flow through them. 6) Getting fed up of doors needing to be opened by guards, especially at the entrance, causing loads of traffic? Well, have I got the tool for you, buy one of the premium grade door servos and stick it directly above your door! Then buy a door control unit and hook it up just like the CCTV cameras. The door will open when anyone who is allowed through attempts to use it (won't open for them damned dirty escapees), without the assistance of a guard. Yours today from only 200$! 7) Another quality of life tip: When building foundations, running it up to the edge of a wall will have it connect up nicely to the wall, but overlapping it with the wall will knock down that wall, essentially expanding the room. (Seen you be a bit confused by this a few times)
Ok I got the answers covered for you NL, firstly you can get rid of logs by clicking on them, then select the “sell object” option instead of “dump” or go to the objects tab and use the sell object tool (this works for all “finished goods”). Secondly, to assign prisoners to work at an area, and remove the logs, it needs to be enclosed or at least separated from other room types with a door (not a metal detector). So in your situation u could just replace the metal detector between the workshop and the export room. Thirdly to make cctv cameras work, you need to go to the utilities tap and select the connect tool, then click the monitor then the camera.
God damn it NL. Doors on your workshops, so you can assign jobs. Logs in the workshop are *earmarked* to be worked. Just have your prisoners saw 'em up, and they'll go away. And (pre-emptively) SHAKEDOWN your prison, and put some bloody guard dogs. The amount of contraband in there is probably insane.
Hey NL! Enjoying the new let's play a lot, put me in the mood to play more Prison Architect myself. The security camera's are intended for rooms where you don't have any guards. When they are connected they will remove the fog of war in that area. To use them you have to use wires (it is a different utility from the power cables) to connect the cameras to the monitors. You can do it by going to utilities and clicking on each camera and selecting "connect" and bringing the wire to the monitor you want it connected to. From what I know each monitor can have 8 camera's connected to it, but sometimes they're finicky about connections. I made it work by connecting the cameras to the monitor then connecting the ones that didn't work from the monitor to the camera. If the wire turns blue it's not working, if it turns orange it's connected properly! They're nice because then you can have one guard watching several rooms. Good luck!
Nl honestly your biggest problem any any game that you play is that you dont read.If you read the cctv monitor tool tip you would know how to use the cctv cameras.
EDIT: Nevermind, I guess the Fog of War bug has been fixed since I last played, in which CCTVs worked but only if you added EnabledVisibility true to your save file when Fog of War was not working right and was on even when it was off.
Sell the logs, don't dump them. Selling them nets you a good bit of money per batch - selling also works instantly, no need to wait for workers to carry them off.
"Just get the metal detector installed, so I can have these prisoners dump their logs somewhere." Is it just me who's having strange associations here? :P
Just want to say NL, your video series on this has convinced me to buy the indie bundle. I love to support people that make great games, as well as the people who lead me to them!
Desperately want him to delete those two pieces of wall! One is just above the top door to the yard and the other is a little further up on the same wall, between cell and canteen and the other is between another cell and storage. Would make it much easier to move around the prison.
Hey Ryan, when your prison gets larger, and you feel it's getting a bit stale, you should sell it and start up a new prison that houses max level inmates. You'll have the funds from the sale to establish the infrastructure you need before the prisoners arrive and you'll have the excitement of max security
NL.. for your workshop they have to pass the course to qualify to work in the workshop.. and you also need to go to deployment and assign them jobs in the workshop so the ones who are qualified will begin working.
you need to have doors on rooms that you want inmates to have jobs in, so put a door on the rooms for the export and the workshop and you will be able to assign inmates to work there!
Go to "Objects" -> Sell Objects, and click on the logs (for some reason the only thing you can sell with that tool are the logs :D For the Cameras, click on the Monitor, and click Connect, then drag the wire connecting the Monitor to the Camera. It seems like there is no limit to how many you can connect, but I think the guard only "sees" out of maybe 4-5 at a time. It rotates between them,
The grants to find tools or whatever are easy. Just start the grant and your guards will eventually find the stuff. Or do a shakedown of everyone to get it done quick. You couldn't assign inmates to work in the workshop because there's no door to it. You have to use the Connect tool in Utilities (run it from the monitor to the camera) before they'll work. Without that, you'll get the "build more monitors" message. You don't actually need more monitors though. One monitor can handle all the cameras, though it's not as useful if it's hooked up to more than eight.
If you click on the wood stack and then click sell object, it instantly sells the wood and it is not a worry any more, plus you might want to consider another visitation room, especially if you're going for 200 prisoner capacity
NL the cameras work you have to connect them to the cctv monitors. right click the monitor and it will give you a connect option the just select the camera, you do have to make sure the camera faces the right direction, also you can sell the logs instantly with a right click option
Just got the HumbleBundle with Prison Architect. Looking forward to playing it my way now, but you advertised the game really well NL! Love the LP and I'm hoping to see many more parts! :D
Sargeantmuffinman He actually is pretty good about reading the comments. He said last video that he really likes the game and as a result has long recording sessions, which is why since this series he has only had one chance to read the comments between sessions.
Why sledgehammer a usable toilet instead of destroying it? Because he is NL! tho i guess I have to give him credit for having happy prisoners, my prison is superior, but people are angry all the time...I know it's superior because my prison rating is better and my re offending rate is way better.
Use more doors. They mark off an area, for example the workshop. The game doesnt recognize the workshop as a room. Use doors more often overall. Else you make us and the game crazy!
▂▃▄▅▆▇█▓▒░ Jimmy Tuggs ▒▓█▇▆▅▄▃ Idk, I honestly don't think it's possible for bad things to happen in Prison Architect unless you let them happen. There doesn't seem to be any random elements to the game. The only fire he's had was caused by himself, and he only let people escape because of poor construction. So unless you just keep expanding your prison and don't provide food/showers for them, basically nothing bad will ever happen.
When you build a new foundation you don't need to destroy a wall and hope that prisoners don't escape. Just order your workmen to build a cell door on a place you want to open up for pathway and they install it into the wall which is enough for the area to fill up. The wall is automatically removed when they install the cell door and you can just dismantle the door after the foundation is done. Prisoners won't be able to escape if you do it that way. Also the dismantled cell door goes into the storage and is reused if you build another cell so no money is lost. :)
Northernlion you big dingus the logs are sitting in the workshop waiting to be sawed into planks which can be exported XD, you cant trash then b/c they are already queued to be sawed into planks by your prisoners after they pass the workshop course so they (the logs) cant be thrown out. Once the prisoners pass the course THEN you can manufacture planks from the logs and export them. PS: Great series, loving it so far, it sucks having to wait for new episodes (I'm actually subscribing so that I don't miss any new episodes, its been a while coming as I am a long time subscriber on twitch :D)
*ADDITION* Also, I forgot to mention that you can sell the logs without sawing them into planks, but that wont work either because the logs are still going to be queued to be sawed into planks. PPS: Off topic but is the correct spelling SAWN or SAWED? Spell check tells me that sawn is incorrect but I feel like it isn't :l
The exports need to be near the road, just like the deliveries and the garbage area are. Makes enough sense, since the trucks pick up these exports. A good rule of thumb is to have your kitchen/workshop near the deliveries/exports and those all near the road so there's less traffic in the other areas of the prison. The reason why your workshop isn't working is because you need to seal off areas with a door. Then go to deployment, search for jobs, and assign prisoners to different types of jobs, including turning logs to wood planks which are more profitable to sell. Most commenters are right, it took me hours of play to get this info on my own.
The Workshop is a unique room. Workers move raw material into the Workshop and move finished products out from the TABLES. Only prisoners can move stuff within the Workshop. If you want to get around this problem, delete the Workshop designation and the workers will not be bound by this restriction. Imports>Moved-by-Workers>Workshop-Table. Exports>Moved-by-Prisoners>Workshop-Table>Moved-by-Workers>Export-Area. You can only set a room for prison workers if it's completely enclosed (walls and doors only). So, get rid of the metal detectors and add doors. Then go to deployment and set the prisoners. The Export "Room" is not really a room. It works just like the Garbage Area. Place it along the curb and workers will move the exports onto trucks from the curb.
Licence plates give you less money then wooden planks. and the exports room can be outside next to the road. Also you can sell logs on your own the same way you dump them.
I have an idea/challenge for NL if he does another one of these. The first 3 days you get to build then you have to put intake on for low, medium, and max risk prisoner but your not allowed to turn intake off after you cut it on
you can sell the logs by either clicking on em (like you did to dump) and going to sell, or by using the sell objects tool in the objects menu. doesnt take any workers, and those stacks will get you a good few thousand bucks to boot.
Northernlion, please, please read the tips by placing the mouse over an object in the "objects" or "utilities" menu. By the way, use doors more often, they delimitate zones, that's why you cannot dump the logs, because the game doesn't recognize the workshop as a zone. Instead, it thinks it's one with the exports room and with that zone which is unoccupied
So I watched about the first 9 min on my phone, a few hours ago. And now I wanted to finish it on my laptop, so I clicked on the video and it started it at 9 min in; where stopped it. I had no idea you tube could do that over 2 devices. Sweet!
Keep calm and leave the poor logs alone - put a door on the workshop, assign prisoners to actually work there and they will process the logs into planks. Again: 1. put door on workshop 2. assign prisoners to work in workshop 3. ??? 4. Logs become profit
"CCTV Cameras don't work right now" - Who told you that? They do work fine in the current version, the only thing not working is the lying pos tooltip that always tells you to build more monitors. Just connect the cameras with the monitors (there is a "connect" option when you click either a camera or a monitor) and they are ready to go.
Metal detectors are not replacements for doors! Your workshop needs doors so you can assign prisoners to work in it. You also need to make a Security room for the monitors to work and activate the CCTVs.
one way to get rid of logs is click on them and select sell object also, the cameras need to be connected to the monitors, but i dont know if they have any effects in the game
YOU. NEED. TABLES!! Prisoners and workmen will store materials on tables in the workshop and possibly the exports (?), however, you NEED to make it so that you can assign jobs to the workshop in order to make any prisoners work there; try adding a door or something to define it as its own room
Unless they got broken again the CCTV cameras do work, but only if you turn on Fog of War. For some reason things get fog even if you have fog turned off, but if you turn fog on then the cameras un fog the area which they patrol so long as there is someone in range of the moniter, you can have 1 guard stand in the location of 4 moniters. The way you turn Fog of War on in a save you started without it is %appdata%\..\Local\Introversion\Prison Architect\saves then open up the save file and add the line EnabledVisibility true (or change the line EnabledVisibility false to true if it already exists)
6:05 NL, your Canadian side is showing. I love how he says he doesn't mean to be offensive right before he says the least offensive thing imaginable. At least as far as critiques go.
also the monitors have to be connected to the cameras, click on the monitor then click "connect" then click on the camera itself i think 1 monitor can support something like 10 cameras
You should really shorten the yard by a tile or 2, and add a hallway from the left side of your prison to the right side. If for nothing more than the benefit of workers and distance to travel. Maybe this has been added already, I should really wait to comment before wathcing the newest episodes :D
So there finally was an escape. Must have been easy with all those LARGE PIPES UNDER CELLS AND THE WATER PLANT DIRECTLY OUTSIDE. Even the guys at the top of the prison have like 6 feet at most to dig out past the wall.
Where did this idea that having wood in a workshop was bad come from? If you dump your wood (which you could have just sold anyway), you're just going to have to buy it..since its a wood working, workshop, thus you need wood as part of the grant to make beds.
"I can't get rid of this wood!" - Northern Lion 2014 Also you dongle, learn 2 play! You're doing the things wrong! STOP IT! (I'm sure you'll figure it out soon. Good luck NL, we're cheering for you.)
I don't have any complaints, I just wish you'd extend your fences. Even if they dig out of the walls they might find themselves in an enclosed area. And then thats a little easier to spot a random prisoner where he shouldn't be. i always fence off both sides of the road, just for convenience. And by always I mean I made 1 prison for 15 minutes and failed. because I built a door the prisoners could open as the front door, on accident.. Whoops. Never went back.

Why do either? you need them for the workshop.
Sargeantmuffinman Even I, who have never ever played the game, clearly saw the "Sell" option when looking at the drop-down on those logs.
And the award for most accurate title goes to
CCTV Cams do work. Just connect the monitors with the cams using wires in your utility tab. I think one monitor can handle seven cameras
NL, this is like my favourite series right now :) keep it up!
Use more doors. They mark off an area, for example the workshop. The game doesnt recognize the workshop as a room. Use doors more often overall. Else you make us and the game crazy!
NL needs a room to hold a couple overflow prisioners, builds two cells instead of using *holding cell* that's been sitting empty for days.
I like your videos before I watch them because Northernlion is awesome!
Best part about that escape tunnel is that the prisoner had two cells between himself and the exterior wall.
399 comments? I have OCD, MUST COMMENT
I am expecting hilarity to ensue based on the title of this one...
Nope, just face palm and cringe worthy gameplay.

Gee NL, i wonder how they escaped via the goddamn large pipes you put under your toilet!
Metal detectors are not replacements for doors! Your workshop needs doors so you can assign prisoners to work in it.
You also need to make a Security room for the monitors to work and activate the CCTVs.
I think you need more workers, and a bigger/better staff room. Also, you can assign some prisoners to the third kitchen
British English master race.
one way to get rid of logs is click on them and select sell object
also, the cameras need to be connected to the monitors, but i dont know if they have any effects in the game
Put DOGS in the other Cell Sector! XD. Also, some armed guards patrolling outside the prison work too.
I love this series
NL, Why didn't you put doors in your workshop !? That's the reason why they don't work there and why you have wooden logs
you put the entrance to your new northern wing as far away from everything else as possible....
YOU. NEED. TABLES!!
Prisoners and workmen will store materials on tables in the workshop and possibly the exports (?), however, you NEED to make it so that you can assign jobs to the workshop in order to make any prisoners work there; try adding a door or something to define it as its own room
Also, search the log sounds like something that should be in a sci-fi mystery
Ryab's greatest enemy, The door! And simple comprehension jeeze...
The title of this video is perfect
I am greatly surprised by the lack of "dump stack" jokes.
the cctv's DO work, they just arent set up properly
6:05 NL, your Canadian side is showing. I love how he says he doesn't mean to be offensive right before he says the least offensive thing imaginable. At least as far as critiques go.
also the monitors have to be connected to the cameras, click on the monitor then click "connect" then click on the camera itself i think 1 monitor can support something like 10 cameras
you said "i don't think its that i need to extend the work period, but maybe i need to extend the work period" LOL
Snargleplax snargleplax, snargleplax, snargleplax.
you can sell the logs at any time and they immediately disappear
NorthernLion you Savage! There's a TUNNELER next to your Storage Room. Upvote this so he can see it!
NL needs to check every door and hallway for efficiency.
Andy Dufrane - The only prisoner to ever escape from Northern Penn
Oh norther lion, I facepalmed so much my face started to bleed
I can't wait til you get a riot and they break that staff door to get all the sweet weapons in your armoury haha
Btw there is a tunnel being dug inside a cell next to your storage room...
Who else was yelling at him to sell the blocked log
And the exports should be outside
loving th series
You should really shorten the yard by a tile or 2, and add a hallway from the left side of your prison to the right side. If for nothing more than the benefit of workers and distance to travel. Maybe this has been added already, I should really wait to comment before wathcing the newest episodes :D
Your chefs aren't able to make enough meals for your prisoners.
Dump your logs in the storage area the Northernlion story.
You can just manually sell the logs by clicking them and selecting the "Sell Object" option. It's instant so...
CCTVs need to be connected, in the utilities theres a connect button, there you should join them up. The cctvs Work
Great series, keep it up.
Anyone notice around 22:18 NL has an escape? The number goes from 101/111 to 100/111
Only 4 prisoners?
You should take some high risk inmates
So there finally was an escape. Must have been easy with all those LARGE PIPES UNDER CELLS AND THE WATER PLANT DIRECTLY OUTSIDE. Even the guys at the top of the prison have like 6 feet at most to dig out past the wall.
This whole episode is just a fluster cluck
Wood goes to table To saw which yield planks. planks go to carpenter to yield beds
ALSO use the bloody SELL button otherwise yo get nothing
Not really sure but I believe you need to connect the cameras to the cctv monitor thingy with power cables :P
Where did this idea that having wood in a workshop was bad come from? If you dump your wood (which you could have just sold anyway), you're just going to have to buy it..since its a wood working, workshop, thus you need wood as part of the grant to make beds.
when your expanding your prison just make the armed guards patrol the area you are expanding to or even just normal guards
"I can't get rid of this wood!" - Northern Lion 2014
Also you dongle, learn 2 play! You're doing the things wrong! STOP IT!
(I'm sure you'll figure it out soon. Good luck NL, we're cheering for you.)
Does anyone else have absolutely no remorse to do a shakedown any time I feel like it ? Especially right after an escape ? It is a prison after all.
Was disappointed last episode that Rebuild didn't actually mean he was Rebuilding the whole prison...
you need to have a table on both sides of one press. one for the metal and one for the plates!(look at the arrows)
