We R Memory Keepers Book Binding Guide In Action

  • I am excited to play with the We R Memory Keepers Bookbinding tool today. I love making books and this little tool seems well-thought out.
    The bookbinding tool allows you to punch evenly-spaced holes in paper, book board or leather so that you can stitch them together to make a book or journal.
    Today I am going to demonstrate the tool using the saddle stitch. It is easy to learn and allows you to create traveler’s notebook inserts or notebooks to keep in your purse.
    Here are timestamps for the video:
    Tool Overview - 1:00

    punch 8 sheets: 9:32
    punch chipboard: 13:07

    There are three styles of bindings that the manufacturer suggests: Saddle stitch, Coptic stitch and Japanese bound stitch.
    Saddle stitching is the most straight forward and functional of the bindings. It allows you to punch holes up the middle of folded paper to create a booklet or journal. There is only 1 signature in saddle stitched books and it tends to be a thinner booklet.
    Coptic and Japanese Bound bindings are more decorative and allow you to punch holes in a pattern that you can sew through to create thicker bindings with as many signatures (folded sheets of paper) as you wish. The pages or signatures are stacked flush with each other and the binding is sewn over the edge of the pages creating a spine that is functional and decorative.
    More information and close-up photos are on my blog at www.stampjg.com
    I am always interested in hearing what kind of cardmaking, papercraft and mixed-media projects and ideas you want to see.
    Thank you for watching!

      have one on order - I started doing a little saddle stich book binding from some videos by Sea Lemon. The biggest issue I had was punching the holes to stitch evenly and think this will do the trick.

    Thanks for the review. Always good to see things like this close up when making purchasing decisions. I took a bookbinding class when in graphic design school. The valley shape is to mimic a sewing or punching cradle. It's a tool used in traditional bookbinding to pierce or punch holes for sewing. The fact that WRMK did this tells me it is a well thought out tool.

    Thanks for this video - I wanted to know more before purchasing this tool and your video gives enough information to decide. And thanks for the links to the other book binding video's. It is always good to see how someone else does it - I make a lot of notebooks and have started making journals too and I welcome all the information I can get. If you do not have waxed thread available and you cannot get some in time to do your project, you can use certain types of waxed dental floss (yes, the stuff you use to clean your teeth!). I was desperate one day because I forgot that I wanted to make a notebook as a "thank you" gift for a friend I was visiting the next day and the thread I usually used was no where to be found, so I tried some other thread I had but it kept breaking... so my husband (not being serious) suggested I use dental floss... so I tried it... and it worked... I was so surprised because the floss stretches slightly, but only the tiniest of bit and then it settles and it did not crumple my pages or anything like that. And it is amazingly strong! (The notebook had about 20 x 100GSM pages and a 200GSM cover. That it rather bulky!) I've used it again since and found that you can even colour it with certain markers, but then you have to leave it to dry naturally because you cannot use a heat gun on the floss... it melts... so just lay it down flat on your non-stick craft mat and colour it with a marker (sorry, I can't remember which I used now, but I think it was an alcohol marker) and leave to dry for about an hour. Then stitch as usual. 😊

    One question, why did you line up on the bottom when using the flat side? It looks like the top side had a ledge so that each group would line up exactly.

    • @stampjg
      @stampjg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Kathy! Thank you for your kind words! I was afraid of leaning over too far and blocking the camera view, so I just used the bottom to line up the paper. :-) The flat side of the book binding tool does not have a ledge on the top. Both top and bottom drop off.
      While not exact, using my fingernail as a "stopper" at the edge when placing the block of paper helped to make sure that the paper was not hanging over the edge before I put the hole punching guide on. I agree that a top or bottom ledge on the flat side would be an improvement to the tool.

  • @geminidream4347
    @geminidream4347 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For those who find punching down challenging here is a suggestion. If you can find those chip for a gem kits where they give you mini mining tools, they have a small rubber mallet that should work. The kit wasn't very expensive, I think it was 5.00 and you do get a real crystal after mining it out of the fake rock. If you can't find these where you are, then just look in the toy section for any child's rubber mallet. You may even be able to find one in a tools store like Lowes, Ace, etc. Don't whack it down hard though as you might break your awl, test hits always work best. Hope this helps others with arm pressure issues.

    Hi! I was really curious about this tool as I make inserts for my TN. I am just wondering why you chose to free line up at the bottom of the tool instead of the top where the ledge was? Wouldn't it be easier to make sure the holes were always in the same place if you did it from the ledge end? I don't have the tool, so there may be a reason for choosing the bottom that I can't see. I really appreciate all of your videos and always enjoy watching as you are so informative. I might purchase this so thank you so much for the review!

    • @stampjg
      @stampjg  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Tess! Thanks so much for watching! I only chose the bottom so that I could film it better. I was filming in an odd set up and did not want to lean into the camera frame. Off camera and in later videos, I use the top. I did another video making a fun, Valentine's TN Insert with the tool, if you are interested. th-cam.com/video/PbFh4xwmRec/w-d-xo.html Have a great day!

      @@stampjg Oh okay, I usually get a chance to watch all of your videos so I will have to go back and watch the Valentine video. You do such wonderful videos! I thought there was some reason for using the bottom, lol. I have the tool in my wish list on Amazon so I can buy it when the price goes down a little bit more. Thank you so much for responding so quickly. Also, thank you for the awesome video library you have created for all of us to enjoy!😃

    Would you be able to get the spine of a book under the plastic removable piece? Or, since it is removable, would it be easy to hold in place while punching holes in a spine? Thank you!

    • @stampjg
      @stampjg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Sandra, Thanks for watching. The blue plastic piece is removable, but putting a book spine under it would be too thick. You can only fit about 8-10 sheets of paper or a piece of cardboard under the guide to punch holes in. It would also take lots of strength and force to punch holes through anything thicker than several sheets at a time. I hope this answers your questions.

    Looks nice and simple. I like that. Sewn books are so nostalgic. I’d make notebooks and kids books. I was wondering, you kept lining the paper up at the bottom, why not at the top? I think I will check into this. I make miniature books sometimes too. Thank you very much for the video.

    • @stampjg
      @stampjg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, Marilyn! Thanks for stopping by! Off-camera I usually use the top to line things up, I'm not sure why I'm using the bottom guides in the video. It may have something to do with my fear of leaning forward too far and blocking the camera view with my head. The WRMK Book Binding guide allows you to line up paper either at the top or the bottom with no problem.

    • @Marilynlovesebiking
      @Marilynlovesebiking 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stampjg - StephG Oh yes, that makes sense about not wanting to get your head in the camera view. I have this product in my cart on Amazon! Looks like a very useful tool. I am all about tools to help us craft. I love notebooks too, so that helps. I have a cinch but that is a different process all together and not an easy one. I also have some very thick button thread that I think will work well for the binding thread. Thanks for the reply.

    I am only 4min into watching your video so I am not sure if you mention this later on in it but my first thought when I saw the bottom is the same hard plastic that won't it crack and break as you are poking your awl through the holes up top on the guide??? I would have thought that it would've had either no bottom on it so you can set it on top of a phone book for example OR for it to come with a thick pad underneath...... Just a thought. Like I said you might mention it later on in the video and I am about to go watch the rest now. Thank you for taking the time to do an honest review so we can all make a more informed decision when considering purchasing one of these gadgets!!! Also I am a new subscriber who is new to You Tube as well!!! Love your channel!!!

      Hello UandMeGod! Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! You make a really good point about the back being plastic. I have used it a bit and have not experienced any cracking. I will test it more when I get a chance. Perhaps the amount of force used to with the awl may be something to watch. I appreciate your question.

    Well it looks like this may not be available to the public. Not this year, maybe not ever. Pre-ordered through Craftdirect, it never showed. They state it will be shipped when it's available from the manufacturer. Just went to WRMK website, it's no longer even listed - not under journal studio, not under tools, not under punch boards, not under all. It's not even listed in the video section. Looks like the whole thing was a hoax, and I am out the $ for it. What a scam. I am incredibly upset. Used to like WRMK products. Not any more.

      Hello, J. Adams! Wow, that is weird. It has been pretty popular, but it is legit and has been for sale to the public for most of January and February this year. I'm not sure why it is no longer for sale at WRMK or Scrapbook.com. It is still for sale at Amazon : amzn.to/2EstBwh
      Edited to add: WRMK stated on Instagram that there will be more shipments next month, so hopefully it will be in stock at your retailer then!
