A couple surprises in my Golden Girls pasture... one good, one not so much.
We CIDR'd our fall group preparing for spring lambs and ended the week with a wonderful reunion with Belinda and some other sheep friends!!

As a farmer myself, I absolutely love that you recognized that you and Carissa being overworked is not a healthy situation, and acted accordingly. I know that in farming this is soo hard to do but at the same time it is really important to keep ouselves happy and, honestly, sane!😂

I love how enthusiastic you are about your accidental pumpkin patch! I had some planted by squirrels and had no idea for awhile if the plants were cucumbers, zucchini, or pumpkins, until they got bigger. Was a fun surprise for me too, though mine weren't planted in as good as soil as yours were so I only got 8 pumpkins.
It's always fun to find surprise pumpkins. I found pumpkins up in an oak tree once after the bears were done with our dumped Halloween pumpkins.

Sandi, I just watched your video from 6 days ago where you were called out and felt like you needed to apologize. Honey, when it comes to your family and their health you should never feel like you need to apologize. Some people do not understand the depth of the pull it takes of your inner strength to be strong for your family when you have a person is going through a major health trauma such as what your daughter is going through. The worry that keeps your stomach in knots while you are still trying to keep your home life running on a normal schedule and you of all people have a farm to run as well as your family. So never feel like you need to apologize or you owe an apology to your viewers. If they do not like how you run your life that is turned upside down at the moment which you are doing an excellent job then they do not have to watch or quit being so critical. Keep doing what you are doing and how you are doing things your way and don’t worry about how your viewers see things because believe me they love you. It’s those few that always have to be the hecklers of the crowd that feel like they have to make trouble to be heard. So don’t feel like you have to acknowledge them because that’s what they want. It’s the 99.9 percent of your viewers that love you.

What a great idea to cut down lambing times. Although I’ll miss the extra babies, opening up precious time to nurture mental and physical health is invaluable. Rest is as important as work imo, maybe more so. Ten years go by so fast, and eventually, age forces us to pull back anyway. I’m so glad that you’re doing this as a trial, and that it works really well for you!
After the nightmare year your family has had dealing with Jess's cancer, I'm so glad you've decided to cut back from 4 lambings to 3. You need a little more time for you and a little more time for your family now. You all need to decompress from the stress. Good decision, Sandi! 🐑🐏

It's The Golden-Girl Pumpkin Patch!!! You will have to repay your sister-in-law for her kindness of last year by giving her some pumpkins grown from seeds of her original pumpkins.
Please save the seeds and replant them. You will have continuing decorations year after year.

Agreed. Lynn over at Ewetopia Farms is never bothered by foxes or even coyotes and they put their flocks out to pasture throughout the summer and fall. They don’t put ewes with lambs out but definitely adult sheep. She’s been sheep farming for 22 years and has never lost animal by wildlife. 😊
I thought she was concerned about foxes having diseases like rabies and infecting sheep.
@@Lynne2106 Same here. Which is why she mentioned so much that it looked unhealthy. An ill look + behaviour out of the norm = possible rabies. Not something anyone wants to see, that's for sure

I agree with you. I am 68 yo. At this point in my life, I cannot be responsible for fur babies of any type. My health is intermittent. So I enjoy Sandi, her family, her friends and her farm. Life is good. So I smile seeing life function.
Did you keep sheep/lambies, too, or what animals did you keep?
I had angora goats, angora rabbits, horses and a pair of rare Karakul sheep I rescued from slaughter. (I later gave the Karakuls to a heritage farm so more people could see what they are like.)@@LauraFunFunFloweries

The good news of seeing fox is that coyotes and fox territories rarely overlap. They can be a danger to barn cats but normally eat mice and rats. (birds, berries and rabbit too, but ...)
The large farming equipment always amazes me. Anyone else? The fact that Mark can just about fix all the equipment amazes me even more.

Fun fact: snow is expected in the mountain range known as the Drakensburg mountains between tonight and Monday. We live in the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal here in South Africa. We are in mid spring now and have just been through a heatwave and now snow!

A fox won't touch your ewes. Likely hunting mice/voles in that field. I'd be more concerned about it interacting with your dogs, if it is not well. If your ewe lambs are Rideau sired, they'll be getting a prolificacy boost from the ram. Better to keep your Dorset sired lambs if you want twins.
My first thought of that fox was that it might have rabies. I’m just paranoid. Yeah it’s probably hunting voles. I’m glad you’re getting to do some fun stuff. And so nice to watch your video and drink coffee very peaceful

Yuck I'm in Ontario between Toronto and Ottawa and we had 3 days this week 70F it was awesome and several rainy days around 66F I have daisies and buttercups blooming along my dead end dirt Rd. Today it was chilly I definitely do not want to see any of that ❄️

After watching this two thoughts occurred to me. 1. I'm glad that you put you camera down and enjoyed your time with your fellow sheep farmer's. 2. After all that has occurred in the past year only three breeding cycles will help you slow down to embrace life and those around you more.
GIRLS NIGHT OUT?! .....I'm coming I'm coming ...laughter
So... the cute pumpkins ... chop in half, scrape out seeds stuff with a nice mixture of ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onions and celery with herbs and spices to taste, bake in the oven with baking potatoes and serve with steamed broccoli and boiled carrots finished with butter and a bit of sugar to caramelize. Then invite me to join you for dinner.😅

Pumpkins are VERY prolific!
"Somebody" tossed a pumpkin into the compost pile a couple of years back. The following spring we used the compost on our flowerbeds among other places....long story short, we let them grow and we are still eating at the 42 qts that we canned😂 Had awesome pumpkin curry last week...they were the small honey pie Pumpkins....couldn't have grown them if we'd tried😂

A good reminder that gardening doesn't have to be difficult or hard work. If you choose the right plants you can literally throw seeds on the ground and forget about them. Nature will do its thing. ❤ Gorgeous pumpkins.

That's so great that Sandi got together with friend Belinda and attended the Sheep Conference together. A little recreation that was well needed. WOW, Belinda said she had 300 Sheep. That's a lot. Nice to have a friendship whereby they both share the same occupation.

Sandi, I would like to really encourage you, Mark & Jess to book yourselves some therapeutic massages. Maybe try Thai massage where you stay fully clothed. I think your achy, breaky bodies need a reprieve. You're wise for reducing lambing times from 4 to 3! 💕💕

Yes! Our dog likes dried chicken breast. We used to call them treats, puppy dog treats then abbreviated to pdt now she has learnt that.
And then they'll learn to spell.

I have so many questions:
Are the young ones in the retirement village getting bred ever?
Does pushing back the spring lambing have an impact on their natural breeding timing window?
How many ewe lambs did you keep?
How do you keep retained ewes from breeding with their fathers?
Was it a hard choice to push back spring lambing and miss Easter?
I love to see you so happy and I’m really proud of you for putting your health and sanity first. I hope TH-cam continues to support these healthy choices ❤
She assigns ewes to different breeding groups than their fathers, which is why she’ll somewhat sort by breed, easier to keep track of who’s who. Ie. If they’re a Rideau cross breed, they’ll be bred to a Suffolk breed or vice-versa. There’s also only one youngin with the Golden Gals, it’s Tomatoes, which came from Belinda, never been bred. The GGs are obviously retired…and these sheep naturally breed in Spring. She uses injections to trigger breeding outside of season, bonus that it synchronises her groups for easier lambing…

When Piper ran past the camera and looked at herself as she ran by, was so cute.
What we want to know is if the spotted and two-tone ewes made the cut to be future mommas and carry on the spots and tones, you know the cute ones so we melt at lambing time? Your episodes always bring a smile to my face. Love the golden girls and I just want to clean their wool, love the pumpkin patch and I think you need to do that again and more all over the pasture just to see what happens, and so good to see Belinda again. Keep being you.
Great video! You covered a lot of different topics! So good to see you and Belinda having some girl time and being able to go to the convention. You both looked really sharp dressed up. But even when you are in work clothes you look just fine! Like the idea of cutting back on one lambing. Both you and Carissa are so flat out during this time, you both need time to regenerate.
