I have always appreciated that you use Drops brand yarn for some of your garments. As you have pointed out, the price makes it accesible to many people who otherwise couldn’t afford to knit with 100% wool. Honestly, if I see one more $400 sweater made out of some trendy superwash yarn-which comes with a whole host of its own environmental issues, I think I might scream. It gets old and some of the very popular names in the knitting world just keep cranking out patterns for $400+ sweaters. At what point does that become gluttonous? It certainly isn’t inclusive. Obviously, stealing a designer’s pattern is despicable, but I have never heard anyone point to a specific instance of this. Let’s face it - there are a ton of sweaters out there that all look pretty similar to each other and not because anyone is stealing the design, but because a plain vanilla V neck cardigan or pullover can only vary so much. I am fortunate enough to be able to buy whatever I want to use, I knit obsessively and I often splurge on yarn- but I realize not everyone is in this position.

Thank you for choosing the Fistula Foundation. I have Crohns disease and have had several fistula but was fortunate enough to be born in a country with free public Healthcare and parents who pay for health insurance. When I had my fistulas I was able to get surgeries quickly once diagnosed. However I can testify that the pain and gross symptoms are real and as awful as you might think. I'm so grateful to have been born in my situation and hate that there are others in the world that weren't and have to live with this. Thank you for supporting this charity. Thank you.

I’m always amazed at how much you do, especially given designing is a “side” gig! So funny when you hold up your piece and surprise yourself at how cool it is! You’re so down to earth, generous, considered, compassionate and authentic…such a fan for many reasons Rebecca, not just for your gorgeous knits (can’t wait to see where the herringbone goes!!) ❤

I love Drops yarn. Its affordability works for my budget. I love that you’re designing with it which makes your designs very appealing to me personally (coupled with that fact that your designs are creative and amazing!). I don’t even look at the patterns Drops has available because the few I have looked at have been horribly written. If there’s stealing that’s HORRIBLE but I’m all about only the yarn. I can’t wait for your Rhue sweater! It’s beautiful!

Hi Rebecca , I love all your work. On the subject of Drops patterns, I own soooo many vintage patterns as I have been knitting for over 50 years and never get rid of my patterns. I have original patterns from the 50s that belonged to my Mum. Every new design that comes to Ravelry , I liken to a pattern that I own, and think fashions come back around every 10 to 20 years or so. There are certain traditional stitches as you know, that are used over and over so its inevitable , for designs to resemble each other. However if there is deliberate rip off tactics , that is a different matter. Keep up the great design work and the podcasting. xxx

Thank you for being such a high minded gift of a human. It’s a beautiful thing to make charity a part of your life and business. I was going to buy the Stick Season pattern but now I’ll buy both even though I don’t now when I’ll get around to knitting Daft Days. I love your designs, and I love the ethos of the brand you’re creating. ❤

I am always looking for an affordable way to knit sweaters. I will make many sweater or sweater dress mods out of one pattern, so my wardrobe doesn’t look all the same. Drops and others like it it tend to be what I can afford. So I always am grateful when someone like you uses wool I can afford. I also appreciate how well you describe the patterns you publish and offer modifications. Finally, I depend on the descriptions and opinions about wools I haven’t used from people like you. I enjoy your podcasts.

I have never seen double dimples - you are just so wholesome. You should be in commercials. In your green sweaters, you look like an Irish Coleen ❤️. Congrats on new pattern releases - you’re doing an exceptional thing with your donations. Much praise and admiration from someone almost old enough to be your granny. 🤗🥰 PS: re affordable yarn - I haven’t used Drops but I’ve always appreciated that you are aware of price points and try to offer affordable options. Hand dyed yarns are beautiful and are labour intensive but they are ridiculously expensive. So kudos to you for being aware of so much outside of yourself, if you get what I mean. You’re a super sweet human 🤗

Initially I wasn't drawn to Drops yarn but having tried it I love that it is affordable and to be honest pretty good quality too. I do not look at the patterns and buy from designers, mainly through Ravelry. I have bought way more than I am ever likely to knit!! I think I have a mix of yarns varying from more expensive to Drops and am just concentrating on knitting through as much of my stash as I can before buying without a specific purpose.

So grateful you are supporting Fistula Foundation. I didn't even know about the organization until I went to check out your beautiful cardigan pattern and learned about it. I had terrible tears from my first very difficult labor that impacted me for years, and that was with the amazing help of midwives who took excellent care of me -- I can only imagine how detrimental they would have been if I hadn't had that level of care. Reading about the work the Fistula Foundation and the surgeons they support does brought me to tears (and is again now!). I'm so glad to be able to support them and get your lovely patterns in the process, and I'm looking forward to supporting them more in the future. Found out about your podcast in the midst of all this, yay. :)

Green is the best colour in the world, welcome on the emerald side 😂 it underlines your snow white features!
On the subject on Drops: i started out as a knitter on one of their pattern, because it was there and accessible and I had no Community or other ressources. I have since "outgrown" the OMG IT'S A FREE PATTERN mindset and I buy my patterns consciously from designers like you but it still wouldn't be possible without their affordable yarn.

Thank you for another lovely episode. Your talent is endless, and you should be so very proud. I wish that I could access DROPS yarn more easily here in North Carolina. It takes effort and balanced against their alleged pattern poaching. I tried to knit one of their patterns about 8 years ago and it was so confusing and poorly written. Again, the work that your are doing for the Fistula Foundation is wonderful. Will order a pattern soon. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner; just me and my husband. It was quiet, but lovely too, and our weather was just right - cool but sunny. Have a great few weeks, and I will be looking forward to seeing your next episode. Cheers!

Beautiful makes as always… I’m quite impressed by how much you turn out. The Chanel-esque vibe of your black and white Daft Days…. Perfect. Thank you for again supporting a worthy charity and letting us help!❤ I am also so into the greens. Was delighted to find out what happened to the one you started on your Ireland trip and very happy for you that you now have a worthy replacement for your green Billy. Hi Rebecca, I love hanging out with you while I'm knitting and listening to your thoughts about everything to do with the craft. Your designs are lovely. Regarding Drops, I've never used it or even seen it (I live in the US) but I have heard rumors for years about them passing off the designs of others as their own. However, I have never seen any substantiation of this and I'm curious. Are there specific designs and designers you can point me to, or anything out there that looks like evidence rather than just rumors that gain traction with repetition? Thank you for your wonderful podcast!

I for one appreciate you showing Drops yarn so that we get introduced to their yarns and then we can make a choice to use Drops or a more expensive yarn. I'm in the US so I don't have the option of looking at the Drops yarns in person to see how they feel and your input is very much appreciated on Drops!!!! Also, good for you supporting the causes you want!! Count me in! And can't wait to see the herringbone fabric!!

Firstly your Daft days cardigan is beautiful, I love the rainbow version but your black and white version is so stylish. I can understand why you were so excited to see your Rhue, it is gorgeous! Your new cable jumper is beautiful, I love the cables running across the shoulder and round the neck edge, I think a fluffy red cardigan would be so special. As far as the Drops controversy - I think being ethical is more often a choice born of privilege than we'd like to admit. I don't think anyone should have to feel shame for not being financially able to make the most ethical choices

Such lovely new designs in the works. I am knitting the Dornie now in Wool of the Andes worsted in their Aurora Green and it's really lovely. It looks tiny but I know cables stretch quite a bit.
Drops, Holst Garn, Wooly Knit, and Knit Picks are the most economical yarns that allow me to knit, which is my therapy along with gardening. I don't look to any yarn company for their knit designs in general. I do wish I could find a few of Rauma's patterns in English and I like a few Sandnes Garn patterns but the yarn is too expensive for me to purchase to get the patterns.

I’m curious what other people think about DROPS as well. I’ve seen people feel guilty for using their yarn. It’s no question that it’s incredibly accessible, and the fibers they offer are nice. But with the price so low I guess you have to wonder about ethics and sustainability? There is also the pattern stealing aspect. In my opinion, knitting your own clothes is already more sustainable and ethical. Getting up in arms over the sourcing of yarn and essentially not allowing people to use accessible yarn without feeling guilty seems unnecessary in the slow fashion world.

  • @Stitchers_Whimsy
    @Stitchers_Whimsy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I love the idea of the the white cabled WIP you have going as a vest, especially in red with that cable as the sleeve edging! That could be done by Christmas as a vest! And as for Drops, I have been looking at their yarn for a few sweaters as they are a great budget yarn. I don’t use their patterns ever because they have a history of only putting them in charts and my brain can NOT comprehend complicated charts. Pacific Knit wear has doodles that are just blocks of color so I can follow that easier but complicated charts just defeat my brain. I think it’s because I started as a crocheter and am left handed so my brain is trained to read charts from left to right and I can’t seem to make my brain go back to reading charts right to left. And as a knitter I knit Portuguese style so it’s not mirrored! lmao
But I didn’t know that about their stealing patterns. Not cool. I might have to consider buying from them. But they are one of the only places that I can get quality mohair and alpaca for less than $5 US a skein.

Thank you so much Rebecca for your compassion in sharing your blessings with other women, especially women afflicted with fistulas. While not a shawl person, I will purchase both patterns and probably actually knit the Daft Days shawl as soon as I cast off one of my current WIPs...or perhaps before then. I check for new podcasts from you every week, just in case. Your smile always makes the day joyful.
The Lanark (for an adult grandson) is on hold for the moment, but I'll get back to it.....a very slow knit that is eating lots of yarn. Fortunately, I was able to get a second cone of Holstgarn supersoft in the same dye lot, as I'm making a basket weave sweater out of it as well. Too many sweaters as WIPs right now. How do you make so many at once? I have a french door's worth of project bags with WIPS lined up as a wind-stop to "winterize" our apartment in Pienza. My husband is no longer complaining about how many WIPs I have, as they are keeping us warm and cozy. Next challenge is to decide what to bring back to the US for a few months, although the 18 hours of flying and airport time should get me pretty far on a Leith which I will finish swatching for when my main color arrives this week (Cascade 220 in jewel tones, and Supersoft in a barely grey woth flecks of dark grey, possibly double with a strand of titcaca, if needed to hit gauge.)
Finished a Stick Season hat as a gift, and gauge swatch for the sweater. It was good ebook knitting. Used my two go-yarns: Suersoft and Titicaca. Our adult granddaughter will love it.
    TMI.

I guess my question to this is Drops controversy is this…do we have evidence that they actually did this? I never heard anyone give anything other than a generalized statement. I also remember when they were accused of using sheep that were raised inhumanely (which has since been proven wrong) and that they had unfair business practices to the shops they supplied ( which I don’t understand since the shops choose to have their products or not). I just hate to discount a whole company based on hearsay and it seems like this company is a target for people. Just my thoughts. It is hard to get that yarn in US so I only seldom use it so it’s not like I am a huge fan.

I appreciate your using of drops and not being snobbish about it. I’m kind of tired of podcasters only using expensive/hand-died yarn. I know for sure, that seeing only expensive yarn on the internet makes me feel like I need to use expensive yarn, even when I definitely have no business spending my money on expensive yarn.
Regarding the patterns. I was using them when I was a broke student. As a working adult, I can afford to pay for patterns, so I don’t use drops’ patterns more than for the gage reference, if ever,

Thanks for the update. I’m shocked by how much you get done! Love the Rhue, but also can’t wait to see how the herringbone sweater turns out! Determined to get caught up on some WIPs so I’ll be ready to knit that one 😍 no rush, I have plenty LOL.

Love the episode and your knits. Love the new colour work design would love to knit. I love that you use different price points for your makings because we all have different yarn budgets. I haven’t tried a drops pattern because I like to support the designers.

The blanket seems quite balanced as it is. Light colours in the middle and darker ones going out. One suggestion could be to take the other colours you have left over to make a border all around. The stripes will be narrow, but the balance will still be there.

@the.creabea PLEASE design a circular yoke *something* that uses short rows AFTER the colorwork/texture/lace since there are so many beautiful patterns I’d like to knit without them. I’d buy your patterns for the beautiful job you do designing (obvs) but I’d also like to make a sunday sweater, anker, whitmoor, etc. and learn the skill, since all the tutorials I’ve watched are always mixed reviews.

I bought drops several times and wanted to change some colors. The wool had "natural pure wool" (no superwash) on the label. I dyed it and accidently cooked it. The wool came out wonderful without any felting. I dyed a lot of wool and real natural felts very easy. I tried several times with different wools and cooked the wool on purpose, it never felt. So something isn`t as it seems to be, I don`t trust that anymore.

Omg you need to publish a book😁😁I love every pattern you show. I met you at Rhinebeck told you I was looking for yarn for your alder sweater (which I did, haven’t started it yet since I’m knee deep in gift knitting) going to vogue knitting in New York in January and on my list is yarn for stick season sweater and now I need to do your daft day’s cardigan. Might as well dump my wish list in Ravelry and just have your pattern in there😂😂

Hi! I will definitely buy the daft days cardi, I think it's lovely and I love that you support the charity! About the green sweaters. I got the impression that your skin is rather cool toned (of course it's after looking through camera, not in person, so I could be wrong) so the cooler tones could suit you a little bit better. I for sure think the bottle green looks great on you! I really love how you experiment and play with color, but often it's rather with warmer tones, maybe if you would try cooler ones, you could be surprised by the result :)) Great podcast, thank you!

Thank you for this video! I love the new Rhue sweater! I look forward to purchasing the pattern! I love your honest feedback about patterns. It helps others understand potential weak points and fitting issues. Yes, we love our top designers and support them, but we need real feedback. Knitting hobby can get pretty expensive, so it's good to know and be prepared in case if there is a need for a modification. Many of us are comfortable with it and grateful when other knitters acknowledge the fit issues.
Re: Drops. I am one of those people who is strongly against all forms of plagiarism. If someone is stealing others' work and then tries to offer it (for free or for payment) as their own, it's bad, bad behavior. I would never support a plagiarist, I don't care what other products or patterns they have, even if part of their offerings is their own perfect creation. The seller just stops being valuable to me. By supporting companies/people who don't mind stealing, we encourage more of this behavior in the future. We need to support original makers who have their own voice and respect the works of others!

You have chosen some beautiful shades of green for your "green phase" -- I'm going to take the "pickle" sweater color in particular as inspiration for a future sweater. The cabled sweaters are so pretty but I'm still working on my first cabled project (fingerless mitts) so I don't feel ready for an entire sweater yet. I'm intrigued by the Kip (herringbone-like) design and will be curious to hear how that stitch pattern is created as its very appealing. Thanks for sharing!

I get so excited about knitting when I watch your podcasts, I want to knit all the things visualising versions in handspun. I had an idea for your caramel/white colourwork yoke. You could try adding some raglan increases as well as a few increases across the body. I add them after a colourwork yoke sometimes when I’m self drafting colourwork yoke patterns and they are a good fit. I would love to test knit one of your patterns one day but although I’m on Ravelry I’m not very good at Instagram, best wishes from Australia.

Hi Rebecca, I love your patterns but am not the most proficient of knitters (although I've always got a few projects on the go). Am considering stepping up to the plate and will have to push myself a bit more and try something other than a stocking stitch top down raglan sweater!
Re Drops yarn......I'm on a tight budget and the only way I can knit a wool/alpaca DK or Aran jumper is if buy Drops.

Hi 👋. I love all your patterns. But i neeeeeeddddd the Rhue. Omgosh that yoke is also 😍😍😍.
I have not heard that about drops. I love it because of it being affordable. Value for money. And i can have several things on the go. But if it is true about the patterns….then ummm… that would be wrong. I hope it’s not true 😏.
Ooooo red fluffy cable jumper….that sounds gorgeous 😊 i want one of those now too lol xx

As for the yoke, block it before splitting for sleeves. That's how I check fit on an iffy sweater.

  • @wellwoman4685
    @wellwoman4685 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Love the podcast. The yoke, rather than having puckering, I would now shape like a small raglan for a few inches . In a way I think you should carry on knitting with yarns that are affordable and some of the silly price yarns. At the end of the day, it’s the knitter that decides what yarns to use. Maybe talk to a silly price dyer and see if they will offer a sq of their yarns or a skein to be donated to a knitter that can’t afford them. Drops. Would you support them if they ripped off one of your pattern? Whatever your answer is to that question will let you decide your decision. If you don’t care, carrying on supporting them.Plenty of other companies that sell affordable yarns

Hi Rebecca, For the blanket, would you consider adding the remaining blue stripes to the other end of the blanket where the red is? I think that may be a way to balance out all of the blue that you are trying to use up.
