I was the Key Grip on this picture. Mentioned was the creative contribution by the outstanding cinematographer, Peter Deming, who worked next to me to create the lighting, The old airplane used was an old WW2 vintage C-46 Commando, shot on the outskirts of Ft. Lauderdale airport. The farm was an actual old one in Davie, west of Ft. Lauderdale. It was hellish shooting there, in summer, coupled with some internal money problems with terrible catering. It was another paycheck at a time when they were few and far between. Your information was accurate, in line with my recollections.

This was the film I saw late one school night on a tiny television that scared the crap out of me and had me searching and failing to find it (pre-IMDb days) to the point where I had convinced myself it was a fever dream and that it was my own story and I should write it one day- I never did, but I did write one called Ghouls which had elements I got from Scarecrows.
This actually happened with 2 films- this one and The Lost Continent, the latter of which was so batshit insane, I thought there was no way that one was real! Killer seaweed! Conquistadors! Walking with balloons!? Certainly an insane nightmare!
    Or was it...

Ah man, this channel: it never disappoints. I caught the tail end of this movie randomly on the Comet Network a few weeks ago--my dad had it on, for the record--and I was taken aback that I'd never seen or heard of this one before. I'm always thinking I've seen every shlocky 80's horror or sci-fi romp, and then I'm proved wrong. I hope I can keep saying that for years to come.
EDIT: Btw, "The Vagrant" is hilarious; Bill Paxton is by far at his most "maximum Paxton" (more than "Aliens") throughout that film. It's amazing how it isn't more well-known. It's worth a future consideration for this "Exploring" series.

  • @TeatroGrotesco

I like this guy's enthusiasm for these movies for what they are. There is no need to take a snooty high ground. Also this channel takes note that even when the movie is cheesy and/or silly it still takes a tremendous amount of work and dedication to get the thing made, in low budgets the struggle is on almost every step of the way.
This is great appreciation, a way to find forgotten movies that have worthy qualities and to show that low budget doesn't necessarily mean bad just as big budget definitely doesn't mean the film will be good.

    • @GoodBadFlicks

(14:23) I freaking LOVED "Monsters"! It's in a little collection of different series in my head that used a lot of practical effects along with a certain brand of low budget CGI. Shows like The (New) Outer Limits, Tales from the Darkside, and of course the first few seasons of X-Files. There's just something about that style of show, how you can tell it was made pretty quick, and of course the SFX. Those shows are my guilty pleasures and you will get my rose colored glasses when you pry them from my cold (un)dead hands! ;)

I’d never heard of it but I’d randomly open my many ‘video movie guides’ etc and then seek something out. I was a collector of old, out of print or otherwise forgotten vhs tapes as early as 1994. I had looked for this for about three or four years when I found a vhs copy in a used book store that had a large used vhs section in 1999 or 2000. I was immediately smitten and super creeped out. Everything I’d read was true: it really was creepy and effective and, honestly, I figured it to be one of those ‘movie miracles’ long before I learned of its storied past. Now…with your more detailed look into such I’m more amazed and admire it more so.
It’s a fun film and any self-respecting fan of horror are doing themselves a disservice in not seeing it.

Another great episode, Cecil. When it comes to taking a "deep dive" into the story behind some of the little known horror films, you're one of the best at it. For some reason, "Scarecrows" was one film I couldn't find for rental until 2001 and that was at a local store that bought up a lot of VHS tapes because Blockbuster & Hollywood Video was fast switching to DVD. I remember it did look low budget, but it had some creepy scares in it. I think if I had seen it earlier when it was released, I think I would have liked it more. "Dark Night Of The Scarecrow" was always THE scarecrow film when I was growing up.

They're filming in a swampy area in the southern USA in the summer at night. They didn't know there would be mosquitoes. Looooool!

I loved this film so much and even owned it on VHS. I never knew it had been filmed as far back as 1985 (I think I bought it in the UK in 1990) as I always thought it looked up to date. Great effects, great action and great horror and gore. A massively underrated horror film.

I watched this movie after watching your review. It's a fun goofy 80s horror flick that has some good themes going on that would be amazing in a remake.
I like the idea of this random backwoods farmland being some kind of purgatory or hell where the robbers are left to suffer at the hand of some demonic force. Listen, it's really low budget and not even close to being well executed, but the idea is solid and the effects are kickass. I think it has the building blocks to be remade with some more polish.
I think my favorite effect is the night vision zombie/scarecrow at the end that attacks the guy in the house. The exposed mutilated mouth with the goggles on remind of Vic Rattlehead from Megadeth.

I love scarecrow films! They always have to set up both the reason for it's existence and rules since, unlike other more popular monsters, there are no real common understanding for them. My favorite is 'Husk' (2011).

remember seeing this movie as a kid late night in my grandparents house, i fell asleep watching it because it was airing too late, i woke up and the tv was off, went to turn on the lights and they didn't, so i stumbled my way to my bed only to open a door and being attacked by one of the movies's scarecrows, i was screaming my lungs out when they found me next to the door, i was apparently sleepwalking, i still tell this in campfire stories and scare people, only the spanish version of REC made such an impact on me, but that's another story

Michael David Simms (Currie) ended up several years later on a few episodes of the X-Files. I was watching that series again recently and recognized him, and immediately thought about how underrated "Scarecrows" is. It's almost so underrated that it's overrated at this point. A lot of cult horror fans adore this movie, including myself.

I have always liked this movie, but it sounds like some of the things I like about it were accidents! The way you are almost never sure, as a viewer, if you are hearing people simply talking normally out loud, or the scarecrows speaking telepathically to the soldiers, or the soldiers talking to each other over their headsets... I always thought that was a really cool touch. But, it sounds like they just had a lot of footage of the soldiers wandering through the fields with no dialog, and just dubbed in some talking just to fill it out. It works really well, I think.

Read about this in Fango or Gorezone then saw the box for it in a Blockbuster. Of course, they refused to carry unrated versions so I refused to rent it. Hunted it down at a Mom n Pop shop and loved it. Thanks for the behind the scenes info.

We're you the kind to stay a long time in the store to choose the right films? I was like that. After an hour you got to the counter and the guy or the girl told you it was a special two for one. Damn! Another half hour to choose another one...

    • @erichr1539
      @erichr1539 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yup. I’d be in the store for a couple hours every time. Could never make up my mind. My decisions were always based on the artwork on the VHS cover. And I always rented 3 or 4 so there was better luck getting a good movie.
