Time to start finishing the midships cabin so my kids have beds but it didn’t go well at first. Here is the link to the raffle which ends in only 10 days time - get involved - PLEASE !! raffall.com/36...
James, I think It may be safer to have some kind of bracket for the bed frame to rest on, supported separately up from the floor. Just setting pins/bolts through wood usually does not work long term, as the weight of the bed will cause the holes to enlarge over time. Plus, that wood will likely start to flex, pulling the whole assembly out of square. Having a support that goes all the way across the cabinet area that the bed rests on would be both more secure, and it would actually last. As for the other open end of the bed (where the head/pillow should go away from the window) a similar bracket may need to be used. That frame is too flexible to have just a handful of small bolts holding it in place. It's a great concept. However, if you look at deployable beds in most places, there's significant steel structure holding it up on either end, as well as a sliding cantelever underneath to hold the weight of the middle OR the frame is far more substantial with no flex. Hope I gave you some ideas to think about. I know steel is expensive, and you have a budget, but I am only thinking of the safety of the bed. Keep up the great work!
Hi James I'm so glad to see that you are sticking to a no compromise build.. What you are doing by this will definitely reward you in the future.. Only once I have seen what you did with the finish of your cupboard... It was on a boat built for a disabled person.. the paneling though out the boat was finished in soft touch materials..I believe that the boat went up for sale earlier this year..
The leatherette looks good but I'd question why you put it on now when you still have a lot to do which is going to involve moving things through that room. Are you going to protect it in some way?
James, wouldn't the little person in the top bunk be better facing the other way with her feet next to the window? Less chance of interfering with the window covering when turning over etc 😊 It's looking FAB!!
@@suzieq2958 she may do but then her feet will be above her head as the boat slopes sternwatds - I’m sure it’ll be fine - I’ll have to cover the window with something I guess Thanks
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Oh, I see..... unless you taper the shape of the mattress so it's shallower at the window end🤔may be going a bit too far 😃
G’day champ when you have finished will you do a time lapse video from the start of the build knocking everything out to the finished ? That would be interesting nice work.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt All good mate thank you for the reply I don’t know what happened to the footage but if you have deleted them on your pc there are two recycle bins a lot of people don’t know about the second bin anyway all good. Ps when police do raids here in Australia they take your pc thats how they find everything in the second bin and on the ghost drive every pc has them all good love your work .
It would have been good idea use spray adhesive behind that leatherette as it may start sagging over period of time with 'natural stretch'. Carpet adhesive is easily available....
Your removable rod solution for holding up the top bunk is very good. But, do you think the holes in the timber might enlarge over time? If so you could epoxy a short length of metal tube into both of them to engage the rod. Just a thought.
Spray adhesive works wonders when doing cladding of wood or panels. Long Coach bolts with thread removed will work as pins just weld a little T piece to the head for ease of extraction or a put a loop on it with chain to hold it in place when not in use so It cannot get lost
Hats off to you for just rolling with the punches and being so cool about changing your original plans. I would have been so flustered and have just given up. LOL It looks cool with the little pop of color. Have you thought about trimming it out with some thick cords of rope, as an homage to it being a boat?
Try drop nose pins/bolts to secure the bunk to the cupboard, it’s also more convenient when you want to stow it down. Good recovery using the leatherette and looks good too, you don’t want to much varnished ply throughout.
Another great video James, been watching you since i met you in North Kilworth Wharf roughly 3 years ago. One question about the raffle. Have you sold enough tickets for S P to sell. The site doesnt make it too clear. If yes im going to buy a few more. best wishes mate.
I like the cream and navy. Hope it works out. Good luck on the raffle. BTW what happened to Marlon? Last I think I heard he was having boat problems. Take care. 🤗😊 Kathy
I should watch thease tilll the end. 😜 I'd try heating it after it's partialy up with a clothes iron. It might bend easier for you. Also, it's never too late to re-do. The ceiling turned out to be a good decision.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Soldier on brother! I'll be heading back to the UK on the 14th of Nov. for an extended stay. I could swing by and help out if you wanted. Plus it would be nice to see you and Rob again.
its steam you need to bend the wood not cold water, even over a boiling pan would help, then quickly and gently onto the frame before it cools. try thin beading over a boiling kettle to get a smooth bend.
Probably too late to suggest this, but the corner might look better if you use a length of house gutter section, and cover that with contrasting leather to make it look like a feature. Hope you manage to do something though as all the hard work and professional standard you’ve achieved will be let down by a bad finish here.
Make yourself some frame inserts for the cut-outs (think window frame) in the darker sapele, or similar then screw them into the cut-outs. Should look very good and continue the theme of the dark banding.
Hi James. Those bolts are going to be a right pain in the arse, once the cupboards have been filled with whatever. Why not hang the top bunk off chains or cables? I won’t be pain - or if it is it will happen every now and then. I’ll deal with it. I’ll make the cupboard look better but mate it feels lovely - really luxurious.
I doubt I will win as I only could afford 5 tickets at that time... Loads of people brought 100 at a time sadly but good luck to them 😊 sloe patrol would be a dream come true for me, as im struggling to find somewhere to rent, but renting prices are insanely high, and with a baby due January I havnt got much time, this boat would be a dream come true for someone like me... Oh wow mate - I know I’ve said this to a few people, but I really do hope you win - you sound like just the person who sloe patrol would love to home for a while. Thanks for liking the longer vid - I struggled to edit this one and get it out
I don’t understand why you have cut the front edge of the top bunk so narrow you should’ve kept it high each end and at least mattress death throughout the middle it would’ve given you so much more strength to the top bunk and it would’ve looked really good but the way you’ve done it, it’s only mattress depth at the far ends
Only just started watching so don’t know yet where it goes but soooooo agree with you. Sometimes I just can’t for the life of me understand what goes through James head, you never know he may realise and change it?
Exactly. Should sit above the mattress height to stop the mattress & person falling off and for strength. Top of pillow height at least at the ends I'm sure he'll figure something out
The top mattress side and blankets against that single-pane window is a COLD & CONDENSATION cockup James. And a safety concern. Your kid's head ought to be at the other end. Her back then is away from that COLD, WET WINDOW. WTH were you thinking?!
I worry about a small child sleeping so close to that window. As a child someone tried to snatch my cousin from her caravan bunk. Thankfully her screams scared him off. The world, sadly has too many weirdos to take chances with s childs safety. After that her older brother slept up there as he was considered too large to take. Unfortunately the glass fell out of the frame one morning after he'd slept against it all night. Fortunately he didn't fall with it. I just have this thing about windows and children. Plus there is slso the condensation to consider, unless you line the window with bubble wrap.
James - I don't think your old boat Dope sank, I think it was trying to hide in case you were there to do more renovations 😂
Wow you got some patience James. You got there in the end. Looks good.

I’m sure in The past I’ve bought 4mm ply with the grain all going the same way which made it very flexible
absolutely made the right choice in redoing the cladding. Could make complete boxes to slide into the holes and this would hide the fabric edges.

Double glase the window by the top bunk to stop bedding getting wet from condensation

Haha don’t blame you !!
Wouldn't have turning the new bottom board over been easier than cutting a bit off and adding it on? Or am I missing something?
Nice work chap 👍
I did try that but it missed the other side. Got there in the end
The curves are nice, but a 9O° corner is nice also. Save you a lot of frustration too.
Yes, moisture will help a lot.

That’s my thought - death by varnished ply!! I’ll look into those things you say
Make a ladder for the middle of the bed then put pins through it as well and the floor. Something you can store maybe behind the bed when not in use.
Oh now that is a good idea to help keep it rigid
