- I decided I needed to learn how to make cordage. For my first ever attempt I chose Fireweed to use for the fiber source, as I found plenty in the city near my house. I also thought I would post this as a response video to Phreshayr's excellent instructional video on using fireweed to make cordage. Check his video out for how to really do it (mine is just a hack beginner attempt and I have a lot to learn!). • Easy Natural Cordage U...
I also chose fireweed because it is available in winter where I travel, and Phreshayr shows how to use the plant in winter. He gave me the idea. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
Great job on this video! Cordage is a bit of work but you soon get a rhythm. I find it worth it to try and take a bit of time to cut the fibers into even widths. Glad you wetted those fibers first and nice to see you splicing lengths in. Its a lot of fun deducing fiber characteristics of various plants. Thus far, fresh milkweed gives me the strongest cordage that I've ever made. Thanks for the demo!
@MegaEvilCrow Thanks for sending that link! Enjoyed it. In the boreal north where I travel in summer (mostly canoe tripping) there is only wood nettle, and its hard to find. But I may try it when I find it.
@steintanz Thanks Tim! Hard to find nettles where I travel in summer (far north canoe trips). Nettles scare me! I think you nettle guys are very brave!
@kgdblade Thanks Ken! I need way more practice. In the boreal north of here the milkweed will disappear. However it is in the disturbed areas around here where there is agriculture. I look forward to trying it. In the bush this winter, I will be looking for cordage plants. Maybe willow bark?
@phreshayr Thanks Lonnie! I have a fear this might be addictive! I am looking at every plant now thinking about makin cordage!
... looks pretty good to me!
I tried stinging nettle once - and yes, it was "practice, practice, practice" for me as well ;o)
Greetings, Tim
