  • Happy Friday, friends! I have a different kind of video for you today! I've mentioned it before in some past vlogs that I wanted to endeavor in making my own natural inks this summer! And so, I finally have the first episode, if you will, in the documentation of this idea! I have been following artist, Tanya Val's instagram and blog as she is someone who is quite experienced in natural ink making and has a wonderful blog post with 30 recipes she has already explored and tried (I will link it below)! In this first attempt, I made fireweed ink foraged out in the back country of my family's cabin and am pretty impressed with how it turned out! As you will see in the video it actually changes color from when you paint it straight from the bottle to when it dries. It is SO magical to watch. If you are desiring to try this out yourself as well, I highly suggest reading Tanya's blog for all the safety directions when making ink! I hope you enjoy, and if you haven't subscribed already, please do! It helps me out so much and you get to see more of me every Friday! :)
*ALSO: the Kickstarter campaign is still going on and it is my goal to reach our original financial goal by this Sunday, July 11th! If you haven't checked it out yet or want to secure your copy of my first children's book you can click this link: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

Wow, I am very impressed with how your fireweed ink turned out! Such a beautiful colour and surprisingly saturated 💖 This reminded me of when we would make blue dye from woad in kindergarden. Off to research now, if that could be used as ink as well ... you've inspired me 😁✨

Oh Julia I am so happy you are inspired and loved that you did something similar in kindergarten!! So so cool. I hope you find something fun to turn into ink!💛✨

May I ask why add Soda?

Ink made from leaves are very acidic. In time, it can react with paper and slowly "burn" through and damage it. The baking soda neutralizes the chemical reaction.
Also, to prevent mold you can add cloves - powdered or whole - while boiling the "tea" down. It also makes your house smell great! 😸
